Thinking I'm going to be in town for Friday and Saturday, and will be my first SXSW experience. Pretty overwhelmed by it at this point, mainly because it's been fairly hard to find centralized info. This thread has definitely helped though!
What are typically the most packed venues? I'll probably try and avoid those for the most part. Would love to hit up the FFF showcase at Mohawk for Thee Oh Sees, but have a feeling that one will be packed.
I might just end up wandering around town where my ear leads me, who knows.
Get in line early for The Mohawk, like around 9 and you should be in for the early acts. i had to wait around three hours to get into the Pitchfork day party a couple of years ago and missed a couple of bands I wanted to see. The night event lines can stretch a few blocks and pass holders will get first access. I avoided lines at Mohawk for bands like The Stooges and just went to Holy Mountain and walked right in and saw Follakzoid and Holy Drug Couple and others and between those sets walked over to Elysium for Andy Stott and got in instantly. I went through the schedule in detail and had at least three options of venues at any give time and sometimes just picked the one with the shortest or no line.
Ya, I might end up skipping them in that case, not really wanting to wait in line for several hours. And it looks like Thee Oh Sees are playing close to 4-5 shows for SXSW, I keep seeing their name everywhere.
Man, this really makes me appreciate having a full schedule in one place for other fests. I just want one master list!

do512 is the best bet for the overall schedule for bands. Combine that with the sxsw website for bands you are interested in. The sxsw site does not have the unofficial parties listed.
In general, it is usually not too hard to make it into day parties if you get there early. I caught Alt-J at the Mohawk party and the wait wasn't too bad early, but my friend didn't have a chance a few hours later. THe later it gets in the week, the more crowded it will be. SXSW combines with spring break and st. Patty's Day weekend and Friday and Saturday get ridiculously packed. Usually one of the worst lines is the Rachael Ray Party at Stubb's which I have never bothered with. Hype Hotel will be a cross from Fader and is always great, you will just have to get a wristband for that one.
Work on building a schedule of your favorite stuff with at least 3 back-up plans. Nights can be harder to get into some shows since it will badge and wristband priority, but there is so much stuff going on, you can walk down the street and be like, is that Wu-Tang? and it will be.
sxsw is the most music you will ever be around anywhere, and it's so much fun. It just takes a minute to get your bearings. A highly recommend having a bike to get around. 20 blocks walking can be 20 minutes, but a bike can take 5 and it makes a huge difference if you want to catch a certain band, and if it is packed, you can find something else quick.
Twitter is your best friend for sxsw. There are so many accounts to follow and get updates for the festival.
Lots of rumours and updates coming up: Possible Prince performance? Kanye and Whiz? Ryan Bingham! Falloutboy! DeAngelo? Still some big parties have yet to be announced including the full line-up @ Auditorium Shores. I will update as I go since the above is becoming so cluttered.

Got my Fader invite also. Mot sure if it was from the mailing list or previous visits. I will never unsubscribe from the mailing list at this point though.
What all bands are on your priority lists? I am working on new tunes and so far like
BAdbadnotgood Joey BAda$$ Kopecky Torres Leon Bridges Jack GArratt Shakey Graves Tropics Doja Cat July Talk
Those are a few to name a few. Still going through my massive list of bands to check out. Don't think I will have time to make a spotify playlist.
Im thrilled to see Kopecky, Charles Bradley, Run the Jewelz,Atmosphere, Frank Turner, Twin Shadow, Incubus, Real Estate, TV on the Radio.....much more. I need to plan out my week.

Left my phone at home, so I have no idea what is happening in twitterland since it's blocked at work. Hopefully we get the Hype and Fader schedules today. It does look like Spoon is headlining Hype Hotel on Tuesday from the sxsw site. I will either be there or at the paypal party with Future Islands and Charles Bradley to start things off if I can get inside. That one probably requires an all day commitment.
Usually that's a good spot to get away from the downtown madness too.
That's good to hear. Think I might try and make it up for Thursday for this. What time do you think I'd have to get there to get into the day party? Would making a day of it and staying for the whole time.

I'd probably want to be there around 10-11. Being free, I'd expect lots of local music enthusiasts to hit up that day party. People will be less hungover on a Thursday morning and eager to get in line. Maybe with it being during the day and having some conference goers just checking in to town may help shorten the lines a little.
Not trying to bring anyone down, but please be careful out there. My cousin, Sandy Le, was involved in the accident last year. Horrible tragedy that shouldn't have happened and doesn't need to happen again. Just be safe and and fun.
I hear ya! Im sorry for your loss and that took a morale blow to the whole city. Something like sx that is suppose to inspire, uplift and bring major issues to conversation was shaken w that accident.
Dangelo abd Mary J Blige to perform at Samsung. Not sure how to get in since it is "invite only". Last year you just showed up early and got a wristband when you showed them your Samsung phone.
