Yeah I've seen lows in the forecast here as low as 19 on Monday and 13 on Tuesday. Yikes. Looked up the historical data and it hasn't been 13 or lower in Houston in my lifetime.
I remember Christmas 1983 it got to like 14. And right before Christmas in 1989 it got to 11. We rarely see 20's anymore, and it's not really a global warming issue. It's much more that the +AMO that kicked in in 1995 has kept the Atlantic and Gulf in a warm phase, and since we've been in a +AMO and +PDO (Pacific Decadal Oscillation), global temperatures have spiked. I'm not saying global warming doesn't have anything to do with it. Not at all. But it can't really get that cold when the Western Atlantic is warm as it sends high pressure into the SE which sort of protects us down this way. I would think that whenever the Atlantic flips back (20-45 year cycle) and certainly if the Pacific also flips back to a -PDO, we could get back to some of those really cold 1970's and 1980's winters.

I'm pretty sure the schools shut down over the sub 20 temp faster than they did for covid
Monday night looks pretty rough over there as of now - like 12 per the NWS Houston/Galveston. Looks like you all will be sub-freezing from Sunday until Tuesday day and then having a chance of sleet/snow/freezing rain and staying below 40 until Friday. That's fucking nasty. Remember to run some water and wrap some pipes. It's the thaws that burst the water pipes. We had one of those days in Hammond back in 1983. After the pipes burst at our rental between semesters, my roommate had about 300 albums destroyed. Fucking shit.

new build as of October so hoping everything is ready for it.
That should help. You'll want to wrap any outdoor spigots, and if your main inline is in the garage, just make sure that doesn't get to 28 or below for a few hours. Another good tip is if you happen to have any plants or citrus trees is that you water them. It's okay for the roots to freeze as ice stays around 30ish. You'll have cold damage above ground, but that should come back for most shrubs in the spring plus ice puts out latent heat.

leaning the lime outside because it's heavy as fuck but it's still potted and under the patio so it hasn't gotten wet at all.
I'm like 70% sure one of my trees in the front snapped (baby tree) but no one else has those covered so I might've just got the shit end of that deal
lol worried everyone's fences are just going to shatter though, I can hear lots of them creaking

FWIW, there's a big pool of stratospheric cooling over NW Canada which will mean toward the end of the week, Pacific air should take over as the stratospheric cooling leads to tropospheric warming. Should be it for a while for cold in the deep south. It doesn't mean winter's over, but there is a break ahead for the South.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy to mostly clear. All-time record breaking cold possible. Low temperature in Houston between 5 and 8 degrees. Areas north of Houston could flirt with zero or even below zero temperatures. Wind chills drop to as low as -15 below zero. Extremely dangerous cold and wind chills by sunrise. Hypothermia and frost bite will be possible if outside too long. Roads will be impassible along with drifting snow.
Tuesday: Impossible travel conditions. Iced over bridges, freeways and side roads. Highs will struggle to reach the mid to upper 20s. Almost no snow or ice will melt so roads will remain iced over. Look for increasing clouds ahead of our next storm.
Tuesday Night: Not as cold. Mostly cloudy with a low in the mid 20s. Wind chills into the teens and low 20s.
Wednesday: Cloudy with a 90% chance of freezing rain, mainly north of I-10. Temperatures may briefly get above freezing but not long enough to cause much melting from Monday's ice and snow. Driving conditions will once again deteriorate. High: 35.
Wednesday Night: 90% chance of freezing rain, mainly north of I-10. Overnight lows into the mid 20s. Driving will once again be impossible, especially on bridges and overpasses.
Thursday: 30% chance of freezing rain and then clearing skies. Highs should reach the upper 30s with increasing sunshine.
Thursday Night: Brutally cold again. Lows around 20 degrees. Black ice will be problematic making travel hazardous.
Friday: Sunny. Highs make it into the 40s and then it's up, up and away from here. 70s by the coming weekend.

This could last a good bit longer than originally thought.
14 minute edit: seems to be because of rolling outages because electricity demand is so high right now. Should be on within an hour of going off, supposedly.

Hope this came back on for you. We lost Saturday but was back within a few hours. Read yesterday that 200k+ were still without it here.
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
Damn Texas is an even more extreme example of Not Prepared for Winter Storm Mayhem than when we get that shit here (central NC). A few inches of snow knocks us over for at least a couple days usually unless it melts super quickly, even though most winters (this one being an exception) we do get a snow or two of that measurable amount. But snow and this cold of temperatures in Austin and Houston... prime example of how climate change doesn't only show its impacts through warmer temps!!
Meanwhile, we've had the most piss poor excuse of a winter here: cold at times but always just with damn RAIN. Had a trace of snow a few weeks ago that melted by that same afternoon.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

Give me white fluffy snow or give me spring.
While I agree that there are a lot of aspects of climate change that can show up in altered patterns across the planet, this is not an unprecedented event. I would caution anyone not to immediately run to climate change as a reason for this cold arctic outbreak. That simply ignores semi-recent history.
To be sure, we were in cold oceanic phase in the Atlantic. *correction* Pacific was still warm (Atlantic flipped in 1995). And we haven't seen that many super cold outbreaks in the last couple decades during the +AMO.

Stay warm out there. Shiz looks bleak in a lot of places.
High today here is only 69 so I'm feeling your pain. sorta.
Lmao. It’s 50’s in Pensacola and we actually got some marble sized hail this morning - not the type of frozen precipitation I was looking for. 21 tonight is super cold for here and sucks. But I’m off tomorrow for what If it really was Mardi Gras. So I won’t be up and out early while it’s cold.

Not the full story because I would definitely not characterize my neighborhood as poor, but this whole "well, you know, demand is high, so instead how about you just don't have electricity for a few days" story doesn't add up. That's the point of rolling blackouts, right? Spread out the supply so I can at least get my house back up to 60 degrees? I'd rather hospitals and nursing homes and jails and places where people are at a higher risk have it than my ass. I'm just bored and bundled up, mainly. But the line they are/were feeding us doesn't really make sense.
Sure just drop 8k on a battery and however much on solar panels! Problem solved for all those low-income households that are getting screwed currently.
Or.. ensure the power grid has the recommended amount of excess electrical capacity and not half of it. Or, you know, rolling blackouts.
Water's out. That may have been inevitable. Idk if that will thaw at 38 (Weds) or 39 (Fri). Saturday will hopefully hit 54. I really hope we at least get power back tomorrow. And I hope it gets safe enough to drive soon enough, probably Wednesday at the earliest. I've got friends working server jobs that need to make rent.
