Last night, there was a trivia question. Apparently RI had no confirmed tornadoes between 1991 and 2010.
There was one just this morning north and west of Providence. There's been multiple tornadoes, though small ones, in the area the last few years - either here or in neighboring parts of CT/MA.
It's pretty fucking crazy! I'm getting some sandbags just in case, especially to block off any water that might come in through out backyard doors if the flooding gets really bad.
I was supposed to drive to San Diego for a friend's birthday and run other errands. That's obviously called off!

Hoping SD and LA aren't hit very hard because there seems to be a good bit of reporting about people not really being prepared for the severity of what this hurricane could mean as far as flash flooding and water and power outages. Get a palate of water/fill your tub/fill some 5g jugs at the very least.
If you can and the authorities recommend it, evacuate.

I'm filling some 5 gallons today just in case. Camping at Coachella so many years has allowed me to build up a ton of infrastructure over time so if need be I've got a pretty extensive solar array for power needs and plenty of propane and cooking supplies. Lots of meat in the freezer and some pasta and rice on the shelf but not much else. It should be enough for a few days though. I'm pretty elevated so I'm not worried about flooding but these flash floods could isolate some areas near by. My main concern is power and clean water but with the solar and 10 gallons hopefully everything will be ok.
It's weird, we get storms with this much rain a few times a year and we get our share of high wind situations but this is so different since the affected area is just gigantic. The Palm Springs and Indio areas seem like they will get the worst of it, hopefully the flooding isn't too terrible for them.
The concrete jungle of LA means all the water only has a few places to go, and the LA River can move a lot of water (which is mostly all concrete btw), but if just a single storm drain gets blocked it could be a big problem.
Random CNN link today about divorces in the heat of summer. I didn’t click it. It’s literally never been this hot here and we got another week ahead of 99-100-101 which is okay in North Louisiana and Texas, but not week after week here.

Warning for evacuation in san bernadino county already. At least the last concerts have been postponed.
Y’all doing good in Southern California? Looks to mostly be blustery with some moderate rain. Some of the outer bands flooded north central Mexico so Hopefully none of that sets up in Arizona or Nevada. I knew some people lost in flash flooding in Arizona who were never found so hopefully other than some washed out roads nobody will get caught up in any flood waters.

the storm has been tough in some areas, but where I live it's been a really mild storm at best. Supposed to be a bit worse later tonight.

It was dumping when I had to head to my electrolysis appointment this morning that I was surprised wasn't canceled, and then when I got out, calm. It's been that calm for about 5 hours now. Looking at the radar, in WeHo we seem to be slipping in this pocket between heavy rain both to the east and west of us, but I feel like there still has to be a drenching coming.
Born and lived in SD until 25. Been in MN since then. Can confirm rural plains can get hot and humid as fuck. Anything 90+ usually has humidity and it can be brutal. Most SD / MN homes have both heat and AC (I replaced both mine in 2019). In SD, the further west you go, the crops generally shift from corn / soybeans (+dairy / hog farms) to wheat / sunflower (+cattle ranches).
Excessive heat warnings are for heat indexes above 111 I think. And we’ve both seen endless days of that this summer. Even going to the central Iowa NWS, looks like there can be some one hundred teens heat indexes in the peak of this heat wave tomorrow. But 150’s?
I found a calculator that said you could get 154 at 110 degrees and 51% humidity.
