Random in the sense that they're not cherry picking the people that look most likely to be carrying.
I don't believe this. I don't think I have ever seen a small car get the full police search. It's always large SUVS and Vans. AKA I'm totally getting the full search this year
Agreed. It doesn't seem like a numerical thing.... Also I do think that if you look *sketchy* coming in (playing loud music, yelling about, smoking cigs, what not) they're more likely to select you.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

If I didn't mind dealing with the potential hassle, I would totally do all of these things just to test the theory as I have nothing to worry about coming in.
That being said, I still don't want all of my shit pulled out and thrown on the ground and then have to put it all back together.

I was alone in a small car the first year. I got pulled over and the person asked me if I had anything in the car. I said no and actually had a pleasant conversation with the guy. The only thing they really completely opened up and shook was my sleeping bad.
Also, I noticed his change in attitude once he found out I was from NH. My car had NY plates at the time so I'm assuming that's why I got pulled over. Last year I had NH plates and went right in while a van with NY plates was pulled aside. They must have some system, I don't think it's numerical.

I would totally defer to you on this as I have spent a grand total of 12 minutes getting searched at the tollbooth over six years. AKA I'm getting searched this year.

We aren't talking about the festival staff searches, the police pull certain cars out of the line before the tolls and do a complete full search of them.
Also, I don't know why I didn't throw this out there earlier but slightly off-topic: I went to Firefly last year and their check-in system was such a massive nightmare that they completely gave up on even trying to search cars. By the time I made it in everyone was just being waved through.
I'm sure Bonnaroo has their shit down, just mildly interesting.

as long as security doesn't turn into the fucking po-po harassment level it was at hangout this year, it should be just fine.
BUKU has SERIOUS searches. They search bags completely sometimes emptying (they never look at small inside pockets) and they have metal detector wands.
FOr sure buku is the worst im had at a festival. i felt like a criminal being processed for prison lol prolly wont go back to that one. hangout on the other hand didnt seem as rough as buku but was def. more about it this year. I also noticed at hangout this year it looked like they hired some security from NOLA those yellow shirt ones and they seemed to be the ones being ultra strict.

Bonnaroo i never had a issue.
I really think BUKU is like that because of the scene and the kids. Its scary going through their searches. I will say though, my friend got a backpack of jello shots in BUKU. Not sure where he had those, but I guess when there is a will there is a way.

Yes and I was one of them...
I misread it two different ways haha. Are you talking about getting pulled over on the highway? That's a whole different thing. They can't search you without cause in that situation

isn't firefly still a baby compared to roo? last year it was streamlined from what I remember. I came in about midnight and I honestly don't recall cops or dogs at the time searching cars. It was also my first roo and I was overwhelmed with excitement so I don't remember much. Just getting in a line and waiting. Getting out when it was our time and the volunteers doing a basic search for glass and then marking my car and driving forward. They did have cardboard down bc cars kept getting stuck in the mud from sitting so long.

no it was right before the volunteer search. The sheriff search was fairly quick for me. I wasn't searched last year though
That's really fucked up. Definitely add Hangout to the list of fests I will never attend.
BUT IT'S ON THE BEACH!
This is one of the main reasons I want nothing to do with it. If I'm going to the beach I want it to be like a bloody beach. Wide open space. Fuck standing around shoulder to shoulder in the sand. Sounds like a nightmare.

Yeah, it's not fun to have all your stuff throw all over the ground. Especially if you had it carefully packed. I'd made a robot costume that year and it got bent all to hell. They also violated my ALF doll. He now lives in California and will never step back into Tennessee because of the treatment he received.
It was also the fact of time. You get all excited because you finally get to the gate and then they pull you over and suck 30 minutes out of your life.

I'm aware that I'm weird.
I have never personally gone, but I heard that it isn't shoulder to shoulder packed; that you usually have plenty of room around you and that you could easily get up close if you wanted to. I do get what you are saying though. I don't think I would enjoy hangout very much. I like the beach enough, not really the whole ocean part of it. Plus, red hair, fair skin and the sun don't really mix too well. Ok, maybe I don't like the beach enough... BUT, its close enough that if the lineup is really good, the ticket price is right and I already have people I know going, I would consider it... maybe.

I had also always heard about the NY plates prompting searches and saw it dust hand last year. Though it was a mid-90s Camaro so that just as easily could have been the trigger.

nah my first time going in 09 my tiny mitsubishi got torn apart. I was also stupid and was dressed like an asshole and was blasting music. I learned real quick from that experience

I came in off the highway gate past the law and got barely a glance thrown my direction two years ago. A conversion van with Colorado plates pulled in right behind me and you would have thought it was the free doughnut van the way the laws eyes lit up. Even the dog was happy. They pointed them over to the side. Some girl hopped out first and tried to scurry to the main booth lines to meet what appeared to be another car with their friends. Well the law was not having that and rounded her back up and lined her with the others. They proceed to throw that van and I headed on in. If you are from a legal state expect more attn than others.

I was Hangout this year and didn't get hassled once. Security line was a joke.
you must have gotten lucky. at least 5 of my group of 11 (and 3 of the other 6 were volunteers and didn't have to go through full security) have a story of being overly harassed by security. and they had stories of other people in line and shit that was done to them, too.
and about the shoulder to shoulder on the beach comment - it's actually pretty loosely packed in the crowds. that was one of the better parts of hangout. no pushy crowds and everyone gave each other their own space.
In my eleven Roos I think I've had NY license plates nine times. I've gone in a Dodge Caravan, Pontiac GrandAm, Pontiac GrandPrix, Toyota Echo and a KIA Optima. Four of those years I was with another vehicle from NY as well. Now, this isn't meant to brag about the awesome cars I roll in, just to say that in nine years and seven different cars we haven't been searched. Maybe I'm just trustworthy looking, maybe I'm lucky, or maybe it's a myth that they seek out New Yorkers. (Maybe a bit of all three.)

Or maybe this is the year they rip apart your whole car!
