Sanders is important (and weirdly, right now, so is Trump) because they force the other candidates on their side to address their...shall we say "unconventional" stances on various issues.
Yes, you're 100& right. Like Hillary's stance on everything, which is less of a stance and more of a spin move or other means of avoidance. I want to like her, but she consistently makes that difficult. Don't get me wrong, I think Jeb is a front runner for good reason but he tends to be the same way. That's the thing that everyone can respect Sanders for, he makes it clear where he stands if you ask him, or even if you don't. And don't get me started on Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Rick Santorum or Rand Paul. Folks like Ben Carson, Rick Perry, Carly Fiorina and Scott Walker have no chance and aren't worth talking about. OMG, there's so many of them!
Trump is a "grotesque buffoon" (as David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker, told Charlie Rose), but he's taking the national media heat off of all the other GOP hopefuls, for the time being. He has no chance of winning a nomination, but the attention is what he's after, not the oval office. And he is certainly getting attention though much of it is remarkably negative.
This is probably going to shape up to be one of those hold-your-nose-and-pick-the-least-stinky-turd elections for me come 11/2016. Yeah, I read too much internet crap, and worry way too much about it. It may come down to: Bill Clinton in the White House for 4-8 more years, circle yes or no.
EDIT: Wow, sorry for going so far off topic. I'll continue this elsewhere. I didn't even mention Chris Christie, George Pataki or Bobby Jindal. Man I wish there were more Democrats ready to go for it.
When it comes down to the presidential election Rand Paul has my vote, followed by Bernie Sanders.
I understand the attraction to Paul, and I found him interesting at one time. Then I did some research, and now I think he's a nut job. Here's just a few examples of why:
While running for US Senate he said he thought businesses should be allowed to refuse to serve people based on race.
He once said that Iran having a nuclear weapon was not a threat to the US.
He's made contradictory statements about medicare, mainly attacking it and suggesting that the people who need it to survive should pay more (he is a doctor who gladly accepted a lot of money through medicare payments).
He said destroying mountains in order to mine coal was a good idea that increased the value of the land, which is just made up since the result is more commonly an environmental mess than land that is quickly repurposed.
He doesn't think mental health disorders can be disabling, and people with legitimate back injuries should just suck it up and go to work. And he is an actual medical doctor! Well, an eye doctor anyway.
I get the whole libertarian limited government, non-interference idea, but I think we can be a lot more civilized and modern than allowing businesses and bigots to do whatever they want without regard for the rest of our society. We, the people should own and run America, not we, the people and corporations that horde wealth and resources.

1) He didn't say this about all businesses, he simply said this about private businesses. Which, like it or not, priavte businesses should have the right to do whatever the fuck they want. I personally am an advocate for the thought we are all human beings and I couldn't give a fuck what your skin color is. I feel like the race system in America was simply a ploy to divide our working class. I think we are all humans, and every person is an individual and deserves to be treated based off that. That being said, I also support people's rights to say and do whatever they want. As long as it is within law. Offensive actions/words shouldn't stop invalidate freedom. You have to back all of that, whether you agree with it or not. Which is my stance.
Here's the changes he's looking to make: In addition to letting Medicare seniors join the same excellent health care plan enjoyed by Members of Congress and federal employees, Dr. Paul proposes raising the Medicare retirement age from 65 to 70, very gradually, over a generation.
Guess what? According to independent experts, these reforms would save a full $1 trillion over 10 years and cut Medicare’s $38 trillion unfunded liability nearly in half.
Without benefit cuts.
And without government rationing.
Sounds completely reasonable to me.
4) Yes, that was one thing he said that I kind was eh to. He did say it a private ownership issue more than anything, and it's up to whoever owns that land to choose what they do with it. I think we should encourage people to not do it, maybe with tax deductibles, but at the end of the day I stand next to it being someones right to do with their land whatever they please.
5) I've heard one other person mention this with Paul and I never found anything to back it up. Paul said another thing I disagreed with which was linking vaccines to mental disorders. I have never found evidence to support the claim, but he did also support a parents right to not vaccinate their child, which I advocate for. Parents have control over just about everything else in a child's life, I don't see how vaccinations should be any different.
That's what America was founded on. Limiting the power and scope and government, and letting people have freedom. A patriot wasn't someone who blindly followed and loved their country, it was someone who fought to limit the size and scope of government. I use to be an Annarcho-Communist, and realistically if I was starting my own nation I would use that economic system. With that being said, I don't feel Communism would work in the states. This was the country I was born into, and as fucked up as it is, I love it. We are supposedly living in the land of the free yet we are content with giving up our freedoms everyday. The Federal Reserve has controled our country since Woodrow Wilson signed it into office. Anyone who has tried to fight it *cough* Kennedy brothers *cough* was silenced. Our country is literally fighting wars to install similar banks all across the world. The one thing we have to do is end the fed. Anyone who supports that I support. As much as I hate racism and bigotry, I support someones right to say and act how they want. We as a society should scold this behavior, but not make it illegal or control it in any way. If we are going to go that far, where will we end?
