Mac DeMarco - Not their fault. The sound where I was standing was terrible. Second time this has happened to me at a Roo Mac show.
Freddie Gibbs - Dude was drunk and fell off beat nearly every song. Madlib tried to remove the M from his name and make up beats on the fly but it didn't work at all. Some of Freddie's antics were funny but I wish he could have just held it together a little better.

I didn't have anything I truly hated. A few that were slightly underwhelming.
Temples- This one is my fault. I kind of liked "Shelter Song" and so went to check them out, only to find out all of their songs sound pretty much like "Shelter Song." Lots of people there who seemed to like it, but it just wasn't doing it for me enough to stand that big a crowd, so we left about 2/3 of the way through to get a spot for Houndmouth, who were excellent.
Bassnectar- I was at the Superjam, but like everyone at the Superjam who was outside the tent, I was forced to listen to Bassnectar instead. Once I made my way inside, it was better. Bassnectar from halfway across Centeroo without the light show is like sitting at a red light next to someone with a really loud car stereo. It makes your innards vibrate, but what gets to you is mostly just garbled bass.
Jai Wolf - HOLY SHIT, this almost ruined my saturday night. the volume on kalliope was about half level, the mixing was non existent, and the track selection could have been my ipod. also due to the fact the a couple of people in my group were hyping him to the moon.
Do the people in your group that were hyping him go on the bonnaroo subreddit? For some reason everytime I went on there I noticed someone talking about this Jai Wolf dude that was gonna play at 3am at Kalliope and it was going to be epic. I started to think he was making multiple reddit accounts to promote himself or something
I was fairly dissapointed with Christopher Denny's set. His songs weren't that bad, it was just the two minute breaks between each song that dissapointed me. He spent so much time talking and tuning that he could have easily played for or five more songs in the time he wasted. I really enjoyed what he did play, but his stage presence fell really super flat.

I got a kick out of that set. He talked about how he had to borrow his drummer's brother's guitar amp and that went out on them during the show. He also said he had to be in Little Rock in the morning to start barber school.

I enjoyed some of the talking points he had, but I feel he was way too long winded. I absolutely love his music and would have loved to here more of it. I was also slightly dissapointed that he played so many covers when his originals are so great.

Yeah. I would have preferred more music. Everything that could go wrong seemed to have happened to him during that set and I couldn't help but find humor in it. I know it had to be a great moment for him performing up there.

That's for sure. I really wish more people would have been at his show because he really is talented. He has such an original voice too. I wasn't expecting him to be such a "redneck" though. I found a lot of humor in that.

I couldn't scream Billy Joel loud enough for this thread....
Somehow my 2 friends and I slipped into the pit ~10 min before the show started, the pit didn't look too crowded and there didn't seem to be anyone paying attention to the gate and so we just walked in. We had an incredible spot and I was really pumped. I couldn't have been more bored at that show and put off by his lack of energy and engagement. He simply didn't seem like he wanted to be there, and throughout the show neither did I.
I also was not impressed by Gramatik and was really excited for that show, too. I won't hold that one against them, though.... I was typical Thursday night Bonnaroo wasted.
Otherwise I was overall more blown away by shows I wasn't expecting to love than disappointed.
Amazing shows across the board but for me, Iceage is officially the worst act I have ever seen at Bonnaroo. I watched them and literally wondered if the singer had any idea what was going on.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I thought his attitude was just part of their stlye. I actually enjoyed the set and his "I don't give a fuck" style. He reminded me of some sort Liam Gallagher/Julian Casablancas/ Jim Morrison mold. I don't know, I could be wrong. Regardless, I enjoyed it.
Edit: Also, I believe the bassist was having issues with one of his pedals. The singer kept going over to him to see what was going on. They even cut a song short because of it. Which may explain why you saw some confusion on the singer's face. But, again I could be wrong.
This. This exactly.
With the very limited banter between songs, basically just giving the song titles. And then at the end where he's basically like "It's the end now. I guess it's goodbye" and he drops the mic. I feel like he's purposefully being non-engaging. But what counted was the energetic songs in-between the non-banter and the non-interaction. I guess being much closer and having a taste for that kind of music helps with a set like this. Really I thought that entire run at This Tent was great--my favorite Thursday thus far.

Yeah, I REALLY liked Iceage. The whole "I don't care, I'm just fucked up and these are our songs" thing really worked for them. I sat and watched the screen the first couple songs and then jumped up and got in the mosh pit for most of the show and enjoyed both atmospheres. And yeah, this was easily my favorite Thursday I loved every show in This Tent on Thursday that I went to (Strand of Oaks, Iceage, Growlers, Courtney Barnett, and Mac Demarco)
My group and I just felt zero energy for the three songs we were at for Kendrick's set. Glad that I read people had fun thou.
The one thing musically that pissed me off was the fact that we were within 20 ft of the Other(?) tent for the SJ and couldn't hear anything expect for bassnecter who was playing on the other side of the farm. I heard 'nectar more clearly from the back of pod 10 at 5 am then my spot for the SJ. WTF
Deadmau5 was a disappointment to me. I was fairly close but either I was just so wasted from the heat or he got too mellow in the middle so I bailed and took a shower and went to bed.
I hate that people didn't enjoy deadmau5. True it was way more stand and stare rather then a dance party, but I was thrilled with it, both from the pit and the hill.
I really enjoyed the deadmau5 set. The way I described it was bassnectar was playing for the crowd while deadmau5 was playing for you. I was able to get into the set and focus and block out everything else around me.
Sure a dance party is fun and enjoyable but it is also easily accessible and the overall experience isn't as rewarding.

Yea i may have found myself lying in the grass the 2nd half of deadmau5 and just listening to the music, and it was fantastic
Dej Loaf. Wish I had that 45 minutes back. Maybe I'm getting too old to relate, but it seemed like a big cluster to me.
This ^ I can't believe I actually ran from DMA's over to this show. That was awful. Not that I was expecting much, I thought she was a weird choice of rapper for Bonnaroo. But hey I like the song "Try Me", I thought maybe there was some more underground mixtape stuff I was just missing. I expected a bad DJ opening set, air horns, and stuff like that. I can get into some fun ignorant shit. But I took my friend there and I was so fucking embarrassed. I lost it when they stopped "Try Me" to play Trap Queen, an overplayed song by a completely unrelated artist to "hype up the crowd". I would have gladly taken iLoveMakonnen over this. But truth is they should have just booked Joey Badass.
The only other thing that disappointed me was Freddie Gibbs. He was so wasted because "it was his birthday". It got pretty annoying. I feel bad for Madlib having to constantly rewind his songs, because right as he was getting ready to play, Freddie Gibbs would just keep rambling. And how many times are we going to yell "fuck police". I mean that's cool up to like 10 times....but 10 times after every song is annoying. I wanted to stay to at least hear "Still Livin" off of GTA's soundtrack. But I just couldn't take anymore and left.
Between the songs was my favorite part of the Freddie Gibbs show. I dont remember too much of his rapping but the banter was very funny.

That must have been kalliope because bassnectar didn't play that long.
Mac DeMarco - Not their fault. The sound where I was standing was terrible. Second time this has happened to me at a Roo Mac show.

Superjam - Could not escape the Kalliope bass.
That sentence wasn't getting enough love, so I had to repost it.
My only qualms were during Raury. The sound was really shitty. It got better and better as the show went on and it may have had something to do with the fact that it was one of the first Who shows of the weekend, but I was pretty disappointed for the first 20 minutes or so. Also my friend got caught in a psychedelic time-loop during the last five minutes of that show, so I still had a good time.

Hahahaha, god, that'd be weird at a Raury show. Was your friend all good once the show ended?
I didn't expect him to have a band or anything, just wish he would have played more of his own songs. All Under One Roof Raving was probably my most anticipated song of the whole festival, I figured he would find time to fit it into his 90 min set
The only recordings I've found of his set were about an hour long. Can anyone link me to a full length one? And even in just listening to bits and pieces by skipping around, I can tell you that he played Sleep Sound like 3 minutes into the recording, so there's at least one more of his. Most times, his sets are heavily stacked with his own songs and his own remixes, so you'll get his solo tracks, his stuff with GSH, xx remixes, usually his remix of Bloom, sometimes he tosses in some of his older remixes like Adele, Florence + the Machine, Glasser, Falty DL, etc. It's almost always entirely his work though, unless he's specifically doing a mix (like his Home release for Mixmag from earlier this year).
I'm pretty confident he played Gosh, Sleep Sound, Stranger in a Room, Loud Places, Good Times, and Girl. So, over half the album.

Oh yeah she was fine afterwards. I saw this woman inadvertently bump into her and apparently she said it happened something like 17 times in a row in her mind/perceived visual field. It was one of those things where immediately after the show ended and she turned to face a different direction, she had temporarily resurfaced in reality. She tried to explain what happened while sort of gasping and laughing uncontrollably, but I just told her I completely understand this brand of mental chaos and that we should just talk about it in the morning and to keep having a good time. She got lost for the rest of the night like 45 minutes later.

Haha, classic! Glad she had a good time! It always feels so crazy and ridiculous when that stuff is happening. Kendrick and his replaying of m.a.a.d. City really fucked with my head, haha. But I realized what was going on after a lil bit because I remembered reading he played it 4 times at Sasquatch

I thought it was awesome how he played a full spectrum of older dance cuts from all genres (house, rap, early dub/UK bass). That's the point of his album, a culmination of different styles of dance music. He would frequently play the record that he sampled in his own song then transition into the song itself. Really cool how he would switch between the turntable and CDJs.
He also played Far Nearer. But a 90 minute set of 100% Jamie xx songs was certainly not what I expected or wanted.
Most of what I heard Thursday: not sure who to blame but I walked out of 3 sets on Thursday because the sound was disappointing.
Kalliope stage: the sound bleeding from this "stage" bothered me too many times to count. Kalliope is better suited for Pod 9 or perhaps the Manchester Waffle House.
Superjam: seemed contrived, lacked spontaneity, lots of bad covers by otherwise pretty good artists.
I thought a lot of the shows were just quiet this year. That seemed to be the consensus in my group. We could be in the tent and just carry on conversations in our normal voice and hear each other just fine.
