I just didn't agree with the line about only liking them if they are old lol.
The four names listed were huge, legendary names in the history of music....not just pop music. Comparing McCartney and Elton John to Miley Cyrus and Bruno Mars is not going to work for me haha.
Beyonce should totally headline even though I'm not a fan of her music. She puts out super popular, well-made music that people really respond to and is in the prime of her life/career. Nothing wrong with that. I'd say out of this list she has the best chance of leaving a legendary mark on the music industry like the other big names Katy mentioned. I just didn't think it was fair to act like the main/only reason people don't want some of these names is because they are new/young.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
God forbid we celebrate artists while they're still making great music, rather than long after.
Idk. I've heard Bob Dylan is sounding really really good these days.
Out of all the old/legendary acts I've seen I'd say Neil Young, Roger Waters, and John Fogerty still put on an awesome show and sound the same as what I would listen to from earlier days.
Dylan has disappointed me a few times and I won't be paying to see him again.

I know, I've heard he's awful these days - I was kidding

I totally agree that you can't compare McCartney to Bruno Mars or anything like that. I'm just saying that sometimes, as a lover of many genres old and new, I feel like many people who also "love" music turn up their noses at current pop.

Oh for sure. I know I used to get annoyed at top pop hits because of over-saturation and hearing them so much. Now I barely am exposed to FM radio and don't instantly-hate every new pop song that I hear because I don't get bombarded with it on a daily basis. There are lots of times where I'll be listening to a song for what feels like the first time and I'll realize "Oh....this is that Nicki Minaj song people were talking about" or "Oh....this is that silly rap song people complain about hearing all the time" or whatever the case may be.

So it seems like a pretty widespread opinion that Bob Dylan is not good live anymore, but what exactly sucks about his shows? Most criticism about old acts is that their voices aren't there anymore, but Bob Dylan's appeal was never being a particularly gifted singer, so what is it?

His voice has never been traditionally beautiful, but it's a mess now. His band sounded amazing though.

It's like seeing a good cover band do different versions of the Dylan songs you know and having a raspy frog with throat cancer try to spit out a few of the lyrics here and there.
Most of the time you didn't know what song he was playing because even when you'd wait for the words they were hard to make out.
I've heard he has good and bad shows but I've only seen the bad shows. Ones where they could have had a mannequin stand in his place.
Dude is a legend and one of my favorite artists of all time but his live show was a disappointment the few times I've seen him now.

Agreed. Pop is much more enjoyable when one song isn't shoved down your throat 1,000 times a day. Praise Jesus for Spotify!
sorry, i didnt' realized those were the only possible choices. but yeah, we should totally turn bonnaroo into a top 40 fest just to avoid a shitty jam band for the 12th time
Ya, we need more artists without top 40 hits, like Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, and Tom Petty.
Oh, wait.
Tell u what. You want them to play the Sunday widespread spot, I can deal with that
I only juuuuust noticed my "SUPER BANNED" custom title (because I'm super oblivious at times), presumably given by the one and only crazykittensmile <3 I can only hope it was given with affection.

Far be it from me to defend Billy Joel, but there's been some Grammy award inflation in recent years, so it's not the most fair comparison. You'd have to look at who won the most of just best song, record, and album.
Leaving Paul out, I think Madonna has the best top to bottom catalog of anyone on this list and of any of the pop acts who have already headliners (Stevie would be second). Unfortunately, Madonna is terrible now and I hate her.

That's fair. McCartney and Beyonce both had some odd awards in there but they were primarily Pop or R&B genre awards. I was trying to pick a widely accepted award as a metric for achievement to take out a variable for comparison. If you look at recent headliners that are "legends" and stack them up versus some of the pop headliners that have been nominated as possibles, the two compare very favorably once again accentuating that there isn't as much of a difference between the two. As stated previously, the one big dividing line is time. If you want to look at just song, record and album, you get:
Billy Joel: 3 (1979, 1979, 1980) Adele: 3 (2012, 2012, 2012) McCartney: 2 (with The Beatles) (1967, 1968) Beyonce: 1 (solo) (2010) Taylor Swift: 1 (2010) Justin Timberlake: 0 Elton John: 0 Tom Petty: 0 Madonna: 0
I added Madonna in there just because you brought her up.
