After posting that I had a "duh" moment and plugged them into Spotify and listened to a decent amount of popular songs. From what I can tell they're a bunch of dudes trying to sound like Ani Difranco. Not my thing I guess.

Their live stuff is really where it's at. Their studio albums have never come remotely close. But if you can't dig 'em, I guess I'll be forced to accept that
Yeah all the Bon Iver reports are really strange. Justin said it was time to bring them back, and then said he had no intentions of new material or touring, and then they played new material. Justin Vernon seems like the kind of guy that just does and says what he wants, when he wants. So I think their future is definitely questionable, but it could easily go either way at any moment.
Speaking of mysterious folk artists, all I really want is for Fleet Foxes to return. I was listening to Helplessness Blues on the way out of the Fort on Sunday and remembered how good an album that is. Probably one of my top 10 of the '10s

Wilco seems like a good headliner bet. They just came out with an album, will presumably be touring it for a while, and I believe they only do their semi-competing Massachusetts fest every two years (right?) so next year will be off. And after all they did helping others this year Lucius is basically a lock.
This is something of a minor complaint from a first-timer, but I hope they book a few more folk-folk acts next year. One thing I noticed is that Jay has been good at branching out from the traditional definition of "folk" - but maybe too good. People kept talking about Pete Seeger, but would a Pete Seeger-like artist even be booked these days? There actually seems to be very little of his sound there; despite the name NFF is currently way more Americana than folk. And I love those bands, and I'll all for making it a big umbrella, but you need some people at the center of that umbrella.
I wish they'd make it a point to emphasize the traditional folk singers. The Museum stage had some of that this year, the real songwriter types, but a few more on the bigger stages would be good. Wouldn't need to be a lot, even adding a few each day would be noticeable. Could be some of the older guard (Joan Baez types) and some newer people following in their footsteps. They are obviously so focused on talking about their history and legacy, but I don't think the bookings reflect it as much as they might. Keep on having the Decemberists, Roger Waters, Dawes of the world! They're all great, and the reason the fest has become cool again in recent years. But just don't entirely forget about what "folk music" has traditionally meant, at Newport and elsewhere.

Wilco were there in 2012. I could maybe see them being brought back but I think it's far from being a sure thing.
One problem with the "folk" thing is that there just aren't many big artists who play that kind of music. So it's pretty much either a classic headliners or smaller acts in the undercard.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

I remember reading somewhere that Wilco was Jay Sweet's favorite band. I just saw them at Solid Sound, my girlfriend turned me on to Wilco and their studio albums do not reflect how amazing their live show is. At SolidSound on Friday they did an all acoustic set, which would work perfectly at Newport. I would recommend the live album "Kicking Television" to anybody on the fence about their studio releases.
I believe this past year Roger Waters was the "legacy" act, and of course James Taylor. Two very big names, but I think we can expect an older act at some point. The whole thing about Pete Seegar isn't so much about the music that he played as much as his optimism and the "spirit" of Newport and bringing people together. He was much more interested in the communal vibe, and the audience creating the music by singing along. Every year since 1959 they have ended Newport with a singalong, so we can expect that tradition to continue.
So because pretending to work hard takes up too much of my time I've been listening to this spotify playlist to seek out artists that I might want to start pinging NFF about. I've really been enjoying it a lot.
Anyone get their hotel yet? Looks like it booked up early this year, I can't find anything
You may need to go to the mainland to find something (reasonably priced)
Warwick has a bunch of places, near the airport. Maybe look into Seekonk MA if there is anything there.
You don't need to be in Newport (bc it's expensive if you are) if you don't mind driving in from 10-15 miles. You can also check out anything around Fall River MA which is a much straighter shot in than Warwick unless you're on a boat. There are some terrible areas around Fall River that you should avoid but there are also many decent ones so it also should be pretty easy to find something safe and affordable.
We stayed in Middletown and it was super close, easy access, and a lot around although definitely not as nice as Newport. We stayed at the Howard Johnson which was ok but that's pretty pricey right now. The Rodeway Inn is 109 a night right now if amenities are not your thing.
