Hey guys, Turns out I won't be able to make it to Newport this year, or ever again. I am dead. I saw Paul Simon last night. My life is complete. PS This is my ghost talking, because I am dead.
Ray Lamontagne was outstanding tonight. OUTSTANDING. I might go back for a second show tomorrow. Such a special show with the mmj guys. They bring it.
Saw them in Port Chester, NY and it was awesome. He did a short set as acoustic for the opener (I got the setlist of this set) and then came out with MMJ and he was so damn appreciative of them and talked about being common musicians who "found their own spot" in the industry. Mentioning stuff about playing the music they want to play and being able to carve out a spot for themselves. I was a little annoyed because most of the times Ray talked the crowd was so loud with talking that I couldn't hear but the show overall was really great. It was so cool seeing the MMJ boys (a.k.a. "The Jacket Boys" according to Ray) playing something else and jamming out on different tunes. I knew I HAD to see this combination at least once on the tour and if I figure out Newport then maybe I'll get to see them again. Either way.....such a good show. I Love Ray and have also loved his departure with the last two albums being more "full" and "trippy" than his earlier stuff. I can't wait to see him again.
I watched the live stream of the Boston Ray show and while I enjoyed it, I can't imagine that goes over well with his fan base. Long, extended jams and pink floydian vibes.

It did not AT ALL. One of the worst crowds I've ever been in. So stagnant. I stood up for a few songs to dance and got thrown a lot of dirty looks. All of the biddies were talking and on their phones through the whole show. These two girls in front of me had an hour and a half long conversation talking loudly over the music. AN HOUR AND A HALF. Another person in front of me spent a few songs showing her friend all of new features of the new iphone. I felt really bad for the band, but they quacking tore the roof off of the venue with that performance so it made up for it.
Looking at scrounging up last minute tickets to the second Boston show tonight. I just don't know if an hour at Newport will do this show and combination justice. Plus the odds of conflicts...

Anyone have any thoughts on what his newport setlist might look like? Wholeheartedly agree that an hour won't do it justice given that he played for 2 hours and 34 minutes last night. Ouroboros is about 45 minutes, but will he throw some of his acoustic stuff in there or just stick to the Supernova stuff since its billed as him with mmj boys? The latter would make sense if the 4 of them will be there anyway but it's the folk fest so the acoustic stuff would also make sense.

At your show did he do the "acoustic solo set" for a handful of songs and then the Jacket-backed set? I believe we got 6 acoustic songs.
I think we may get mostly Ouroboros/Supernova stuff with the set but he can either start or end with a solo acoustic song or two.

This is what I'm expecting. Maybe just the all of Ouroboros with the band + acoustic stuff. Hopefully Newport gives him a little over an hour. I didn't end up getting tickets to tonight's show, so I need that Newport one to be great. Does anybody think they'll keep touring further into the fall? MMJ aren't really doing anything, so I'm hoping they Ray and co. do another swing through the Northeast
Rest assured that NFF's crowd will be 100x better than the unwashed masses in the reserved seating at the Pavilion.
The crowd at Port Chester, NY was kind of bad as well but I totally attribute that to a majority of people showing up and expecting acoustic, soulful Ray and not experimental Ray. They loved the opening acoustic set but then the jamming with Jacket boys had a lot of talkers and people not that interested. I was surprised at how open and easy it was to move around at the show.

Talking at shows is a cancer that needs to be eradicated. People confuse hedonism/partying with art/culture, and Ray L. now sadly attracts a crowd with too much disposable income.
At least with non-assigned seating, you can move around and try to avoid chatterboxes.

You know what else really annoyed me (and I think annoyed Ray based on his facial expressions a few times)? People taking photo/video or maybe snapchats with their camera flash on. It's fucking distracting as hell to me as an audience member and I can only imagine the performer is distracted by that crap. I can't tell you how many people were taking some kind of photo/video with their flash shining for an extended period of time.
I'm all about taking a quick snapshot with your phone and saving it or tweeting it or whatever but when you're distracting other audience members and possibly the performer it's just pushing it. I really didn't like that.

Thank you. I couldn't put my finger on what exactly it was last night but you nailed it.

I had this same problem with Father John Misty at Massey Hall. The crowd was ridiculously disrespectful. One girl even walked up on stage to take a selfie with him mid-song. I could not believe it.

with a weird combination of bitter regret and infinite gratitude we are suspending the US eyeland tour. UK shows will go on!
we feel so lucky to be alive and mostly undamaged, but also so sad to suspend the tour at the very moment we felt things coming together. we got a glimpse of the music this line-up can make. it was starting to happen. a lot of instruments smashed. so it is. despite the sadness, the event brought us closer and left us determined to heal up and get back out to share eyeland with you. we are going to take a deep breath and do that.
meanwhile...
~ Jeff is ok, healing with his family in Jersey. ~ Ben is ok, spending the week in Providence salvaging and fixing piles of gear. ~ Florence is ok, walked out with a scratched knee, but also a British accent. ~ Bryan is ok, maybe seen crutching around. his fighter-pilot reactions saved the lives of a few pedestrians and yours truly. ~ Natale who has been filming the tour is behind the camera, and she is ok. operating the camera with her unslung arm. ~ Steve, our sound engineer, is ok. he was not in the van because he was at his own bachelor party. see Steve is a psychic.
we are so grateful for the love and thoughts sent. they have lifted spirits and set us about healing. thank you to Josh who drew us this rad get well card. traveling around to share music is risky business, but so is cliff jumping. so is riding your bike to the tea shop. it's an amazing privilege, and we are lucky. ignore the actuaries, friends. fill this world with beauty by any means.
yours with love, ben, jeff, florence, bry ~ the low anthem~

Thanks for that bit of news Fawn. I had no idea about the accident and I'm glad everyone is ok.
I know this is a bit off topic but I got to see Bonnie at MMJ Red Rocks and meet Bacon there as well. Cool to see people from this board far from our homes rocking out to great music. Getting updates now from the Newport app. 23 days!

Schedule soon I hope.
Oh the app... I have to check as i'm the weirdo that hates droids and apples and Loves my giant windows phone. Have to work a little harder to find apps that work on windows. It IS time for the schedule please! Doesn't NFF realize there are decisions that have to be made for Quack Club which require the schedule!
I know this is super far in advance but Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds are rumored to be touring in 2017 since DMB is taking time off for a new album. What do you guys think of Dave & Tim hitting up Newport next summer? I personally think they'd be awesome!

Went and saw Ray last night. Picked up two GA tickets for $10 a piece. My girlfriend knows a guy and got us front of stage wristbands. Good show. She thought it was a little "sleepy" for her but I enjoyed it and the four song encore was rocking. Crowd was very small for the venue but was a pretry good crowd that was into it.
