I'm just gonna pray that either gets moved again. Not sure how possible that is, but we'll see, I guess. I was really looking forward to the Bedroom Community show, but I can't miss The Necks, if the hype I've heard about their performances is true. They're probably my #1 for the fest. I may just end up at the Burgundy Stain Session later, since it features many of the same people as the Bedroom Community show.

Two separate questions here...
1. So how would you rank these things in terms of rarity? Obviously, some of the collabs will never happen again, but I'm thinking I'm going to base my schedule almost entirely on infrequency. 2. And who are the ones that you guys are saying I'd be crazy to miss? I know Kiasmos instead of Kamasi. What else?

I can't really comment on rarity that much aside from that being the main deciding factor for me with Kiasmos over SunnO))) and Kamasi, but I do know about acts not to miss. I will keep the list short though.
If you don't see Nicolar Jaar, I'm not sure we can be friends.

Ditto. He's probably my number 1 set at Levitation. Flying Lotus and AnCo would be competing for that spot, but I've seen them, never had the pleasure with Nicolas Jaar yet.
I'm really hoping that Friday at Levitation I'm able to go from Flying Lotus on the main stage right over to Nicolas Jaar to close down the night in the tent.
FlyLo > Nico might be more than my brain can handle that night, but I can't think of a better way to go.

The new pieces? Not so much. nief-norf doing Crippled Symmetry is awesome but given the conflicts, I could skip. Same with Ribot. I'd skip it if there was something else I wanted to be at. In terms of over all acts: The Necks (Australian and never plays the US), Bedroom Community (landmark occasion), and Outside the Dream Syndicate: Faust w/ Tony Conrad (One of the last shows of this album) are probably gonna be the most rare acts, imo. If you have the Tennessee Theatre tickets then add the Philip Glass + Laurie Anderson show. It an be argued that Sunn O))) will become more rare after this tour but eventually I think you can see them again.

You've got two shots to see Anthony Braxton. Use them wisely. Even if you only see one show, make sure that happens. I can't stress this last one enough: Wolf Eyes. It's the punkest 45 minutes you will have this year.

How does it compare to darkside? I've seen darkside and enjoyed it quite a bit. I plan on catching the end of his set for sure. Also, I'm gonna walk as much as possible, but I'll be driving around a bunch for picture purposes since the venues are far apart this year. If you see me, flag me down and I'll scoop.

If you like Darkside, you should enjoy his solo stuff. It's different, but it's not so radically different as to be off-putting. He's the electronic half of Darkside, so focus more on that side of the project. If you got time, here's a DJ set he did last year.

Jaar's set really ran the gamut of concert emotions at Day For Night as one continual piece of performance music. The first twenty minutes or so were slow moving but mesmerizing with social commentary audio bites thrown in before reaching the peak of the crescendo and getting the crowd wild and involved. He would then bring the tempo back down for a bit before sending us back to dancing. I can't wait to catch another set by him.

Haven't seen Darkside unfortunately, but Nico's show at U Hall in DC this past fall was the best DJ show I've ever been to, I think. Mesmerizing is the perfect word to use

I am with you in hoping for an adjustment on Saturday's schedule. Chris Abrahams is doing a solo show on Friday. That's how I am trying to convince myself to skip The Necks.

What do y'all suggest for lodging? I've crashed on couches the last two years (thanks, NotMitchelBade!), but now with my nephew along we'll be needing probably a hotel or motel. What would you recommend for price, non-sketchiness and proximity (in that order)?

Check out the Crowne Plaza or Hilton. Marriot is a little inconvenient and I don't know how expensive Olivier is.
Edit: I just realized proximity wasnt as much of an issue. If you are willing to drive downtown and stay downtown all day, there are some hotels in the papermill area which would be fine and are apprx 5-10 mins driving distance.

The Oliver is pricey. Depending on how far you wanna drive in the morning, you could maybe save money going to Turkey Creek. Phyre Fest stayed at Papermill last year. I don't know how he liked it though.

^^^Thanks. I ended up checking on the website, and booking at the Quality Inn. Not too far since I'll have my car, and the price is right. See y'all in two weeks!

Grrr! I've really messed up. I forgot to ask off the dates for Big Ears and my boss did the schedule early this month. So I'm scheduled on Thursday and Friday of Big Ears. We have a bar meeting tonight and I'm hoping there is a solution. I might miss out on Nicolas Jaar, I'm so sad

Keep hopeful. Bar workers tend to make magic happen for their own.

Papermill was perfect imo. Cheap Uber/Lyft to downtown and back for the festival. Hotels were very decent and much cheaper than downtown.

To add a little more to everyone's possibilities, here are two local events going on Big Ears Weekend
T E K N O X v27 runs Friday night from approx. 10pm to 4am (or later). If you just aren't done after Big Ears ends for the night, this is your place to go for all your techno needs. It's BYOB at The Birdhouse. I added the location to the map in the OP.
QED presents The Blue Umbrella Tour of Knoxville's Musical Knoxville History in Knoxville is an event from a local comedy group. The idea for this adventure is that they take the group that shows up on a walking tour of downtown highlighting Knoxville's Musical History, and by history, I mean shit that they completely make up on the spot. It is Saturday at 6pm leaving from Market Square. I also put this on the map.

Nice. I wonder if they will do another Hello City fest. While I never made it to those shows, I'm all for the idea of these. DIY and whatnots.

My sweetie is playing TEKNOX before Jaar from 10-12. I know there are other things going on but if you are able to make it out, do. After Jaar it runs till way early in the morning. Most of the people who go are in their mid/late 20s up to their 50s so just to be clear, it's not a bunch of raver kids.
