I’d do option 1 because being in any kind of rush for time makes me anxious as hell.
I'd sure hope it's less of a construction cluster now than 4 years ago but LaGuardia was an absolute shit show last time I went to NY and it took me forever to get to times square to meet my family and they ended up just leaving to go do stuff while I went to the hotel.
My DJ company may be sending me out to Memphis for two gigs on NYE weekend. Never been to Memphis so I’m weighing my decisions. What should I expect there that weekend ? Any recs on places to hit up? Gigs would be the 30th and 31st.
What part of town are you staying? Where are the gigs?
I highly recommend spending some time at the national civil rights museum. Right behind it is central BBQ and half a block away is the wiseacre brewery. That's a good days worth great history, food, and beer. Central probably has the best smoked wings in the city but the nachos are good too. They're ribs and pulled pork are top 5. Imo best ribs are cozy corner (downtown) or the BBQ shop (midtown). If you aren't in the mood for BBQ Gus's fried chicken is on main about a block and half from the museum and wiseacre. Also nearby is Ernestine and hazels, and century old brothel turned bar that's supposedly haunted. Their soul burgers is great.
The rock and soul museum is a remote Smithsonian right off Beale by the Fed ex forum and it's an interesting tour through musical history of the South, the development of rock and roll. If you stroll down Beale there's probably something going on, it's closed to cars and plenty of bars and clubs. I like silky's patio, they have goats. The Peabody is an old hotel and theres ducks that swim in the fountain in the lobby, and they parade up to their penthouse everyday at 5.
Sun studio is in midtown. Check out where Elvis, and Johnny cash first recorded, grab a beer at high cotton down the road and BBQ at the BBQ shop a block or two over.
What are you interested in? We got lots of BBQ, and chicken wings, but there's tons of hole in the wall places for everything in between, just depends what part of town you're gonna be in and around. Same with breweries, we have a lot of good beer here, if that's your thing.

My hotel is by the airport close to Graceland and the gigs are at a place called Growlers. Both of them. Trying to land another gig at Black Lodge but that’s up in the air.
We have a Gus’s Fried Chicken in Austin so I’m familiar with them! Will the museum be open that weekend during the holiday?

Oh hell yeah, growlers is a cool little place. My buddy's band played there Tuesday. It's usually a punk/noise/garage type place. It's in the midtown area. It's right by a giant park -overton. The zoo and an arts museum are in there, and the Shell, and outdoor amphitheatre where Elvis played his first show. It's a couple blocks from overton square, which is full of bars and restaurants. Again, BBQ shop is nearby growlers on Madison.
Both museums are open those days.
Black lodge is a quirky little video rental shop that also hosts djs, DnD nights, and other themed parties. It's downtown.
I would highly recommend not staying by Graceland/the airport. That's not a good area of town at all. And isn't convenient to growlers or black lodge. Unless youre interested in Graceland, you don't wanna be in south Memphis.

Well that explains it. We just stayed in south Memphis four minutes from Graceland because we had global entry interviews at the airport the next morning. We wondered why we had to park our car behind locked gates.

Ahh. That’s a bummer on the hotel area but my company booked it so I stay wherever they set me up. I won’t be actually around that area but to sleep and I won’t be driving.
Good to know on all the places ! I’ll make a day just hanging downtown before my gigs. Stoked for that BBQ.

We are also going to NYC in January. I have been multiple times and have done all the big stuff (Brooklyn Bridge, Broadway, Little Italy, Chinatown, Koreatown, Central Park, etc).
I’d like to see the Islanders play but we had a very efficient time last time we went and have checked off a ton. Outside of the big stuff, what’s some easy cheap stuff to do?

not everything "cheap" here necessarily, but here are some miscellaneous ideas:
-if you haven't done an observation deck, Summit One Vanderbilt is rad. if you can go before sunset you can see the city light up. -go to katz deli if you haven't. do breakfast there to skip the line. you can eat pastrami for breakfast. or Russ & Daughters is right down the block, but it usually has a line too. -go see the ghostbusters station in tribeca -walk around soho and go to all the expensive shops but don't buy anything -go to chinatown and walk around. buy fake jewelry or bags from the people on the streets. hop into a food court and have some dumplings, or any other restaurant of your choice. -i know you said you went to central park, but it's huge, find another path to walk around, some other sights to see. -any museums you haven't hit yet? so many museums. assuming you've been to the met but if you haven't go. there is a new exhibit at the NYPL that looks cool. the jp morgan library and museum is small and neat, really the library is the draw here. there is a sichuan place near there called CHILI that is delicious, cozy for cold weather and spicy. -visit The Strand bookstore -get a coffee or ice cream and hang out at Washington Square Park and people watch. madison square park is also good for this, plus there is a dog park there (and if you have an interest in clothes Todd Snyder's flagship store is on on the north end of the park). -walk the high line -go to the Mahayana Temple Buddhist Association and meditate
generally i like to pick a neighborhood i want to spend the morning/afternoon in, find a point of interest or two there and use those as a jumping off point then explore. it's easier to have a destination then improvise from there rather than just "let's go to the east village". but a lot of the coolest "free" things to do is just walking around a neighborhood looking at stuff, though the city tends to find a way to bleed money from you when you do that.

Not even just on the street. One time Mrs. GL and I were in a shop browsing and a lady asked if she could help. The Mrs said "Gucci" and we were swiftly escorted to the back of the store and a door opened up and we were shoved inside like it was Narnia or some shit. It was basically a hidden closet that was floor to ceiling with bootleg designer purses.
If you make it to Brooklyn, I'd endorse the Brooklyn Brewery. Take the tour (its not even half an hour) get drunk and go buy records in Williamsburg. There's also a few good parks in the area to just grab a coffee and relax.

yeah i've actually heard the inside-the-shop reps places are where you actually want to buy things. we've bought three bags off the street, two are still going strong, one fell apart 6 months later.

-visit The Strand bookstore
-walk the high line
Second both of these. The High Line is great, I think the Whitney is near the southern end of it.
Love The Strand. It's either my 3rd or 4th favorite bookstore in the US.

i know my answer to this question because i've been faced with an almost identical situation before, but i asked a similar question on another forum a year ago and am curious what y'all think.
flying to see phish at MSG, 4 nights. travelling day of show. first show is 7:30pm ticket. band probably takes the stage around 8:00pm.
two travel options:
1. 5:30am flight that connects through charlotte, arrives in NYC around lunch time.
2. direct flight that leaves at 2pm CST, two hourish flight, doesn't arrive until 5:20pm EST into LGA.
prices are the same. which do you choose?
other facts:
1. hotel is approximately 15 minute walk to the venue. 2. travel from LGA to the hotel could take a maximum of one hour, assuming traffic is terrible. if i take the bus to the subway to the hotel that is about an hour as well. 3. getting into MSG is always fast, probably takes 10-15 minutes from line to seat. 4. there are like 50 million flights from charlotte to NYC per day. 5. travelling on a thursday in december.
option 2 dropped $50 so i went with option 2. i'm normally an option 1 guy, but i've seen this band 90 times i think i can relax a bit.

I’m not in the world of Phish that much, are you on the higher end of fans at 90? I’ve heard jokes about some who have done thousands, but i always assumed that was hyperbole.

I’m not a Phish phan but I’m a nerd that looks at people that go to the shows I go to on setlist.fm and the Phish numbers can be ridiculous. Definitely a bunch over 100. Saw one that’s seen MMJ 128.

There's one girl in the MMJ community that is at 134 and not done for the year. She's doing the Chicago run. She's definitely on setlist because she posted a pic of her song counts the other day, so it might be hers you saw.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

it's hard to know. in 2015 somebody ran an analysis of about ~2,000 users' stats on phish.net and found that on average those people had seen 44 shows. but that is from a population of people who (a) registered on an old school internet message board called phish.net and (b) actually input the shows they've been to on phish.net. so that is likely not representative of the full population of phish fans. i'd wildly guess the true average amongst people who call themselves fans could be anywhere from 20 to 40. while it's surprising how many people at shows have deep knowledge about phish's catalog, like the people who cheer loudly when they realize phish is playing Axilla Part II instead of Axilla Part I when the only difference at the beginning are the lyrics, there are also plenty of people at shows who just enjoy the music and like a party and don't go full nate silver on their stats.
anecdotally most people i strike up conversations with at shows, and most of my phish friends, have seen 100 or more shows. my phish friends are likely to be older and thus have had more opportunity to see shows, and the types of people i strike up conversations with at shows are also usually older and either solo or with one other friend, so also the types of people who likely have been to a lot of shows.
at the april MSG shows last year the guy sitting to my left was from new jersey, i asked him how many shows he'd been to and he said he "stopped counting at 300". fun fact, he played bass in a local grateful dead cover band, and the guy sitting to my left at that same show was also from new jersey and also played bass in a local grateful dead cover band.

Just did a quick look at the last show they played and there’s a guy that has seen them 171 times.

especially if you started seeing them in the mid to late 90s it's easy to have racked up a lot of shows, because they played more shows then and the shows were cheaper. you could actually do a whole tour with little difficulty just selling legal stuff in the lot. soft drinks, cigarettes, beers, etc. these days they play fewer shows and everything is so much more expensive you can't really tour anymore unless you're a custie. most of the people doing legal vending in lots are pros, it's actually their job, running full on t-shirt and merch businesses or food vendors.
i saw my first shows in 2000 and only saw 7 shows before they broke up from 2004-2009. i certainly didn't have parents who were going to fund a fucking phish tour, and i wasn't resourceful enough to pay my own way.

I like too much music to see one band that much. I’m just starting to creep up on 20 for Clutch in 20 years.

Difference (besides the number) is you’re not getting the same Phish show twice whereas Clutch is pretty much what they always are. Different songs get added on different tours and when they release new music.

Clutch set is different every night. The 4 guys take turns doing setlists. It’s probably still not as unique as Phish but it’s never the same show.

I didn’t know that but it is cool. I’ve only seen them twice, and there were several repeats. It’s shit I like so I wasn’t mad or anything.
