Just wanted to say I'm THRILLED at the news about the new location. I've been hoping for a long time that they'd move, sooner rather than later, to a larger space big enough to accommodate multiple concurrent stages.
The days of "one band at time" at Boston Calling will be over in a couple of days. We're getting a big ass festival, just like other big cities have.
Future lineups will likely be as diverse and expansive as they are at the biggest festivals. All the lineup complaints anyone could ever have will be a moot point next year.
To give you some perspective about the size of the space in the photo, the football stadium alone seats 30K, not including standing room on the field. With that in mind, the space is certainly large enough for three big stages (including the stadium) far enough away from each other to run simultaneously, along with two smaller music stages/tents, plus room for the comedy stage and film screening area. (My guess is that they might do the film screening in one of the buildings).
It looks like the acreage might actually be bigger than the 53 acre Suffolk Downs (City Hall Plaza is 8 acres.)
This also means that we can start speculating about the same headliners that every other festival gets. The days of our top line being everyone else's second line are over.
I'm surprised that Harvard University agreed to this. We're going to be stomping a mudhole on every field they've got. I suspect that they'll be paid nicely for the wear-and-tear.
Big winner here will be the food trucks and beverage vendors. You may have re-entry privileges, but you're looking at a 10-15 min. walk to Harvard Square and even longer to get to the parts of Allston/Brighton with a lot of bars and eateries.
This will also work out well for people heading to The Sinclair for an aftershow. That's probably a 20 minute walk.
Memorial Day Weekend 2017 can't come soon enough!!

Just did a little research. Here's how the acreage of the new site compares to other festival sites, which should give us some indication of how large the event might be:
Bonnaroo: 700 acres Coachella: 600 acres Lollapalooza: 115 acres Harvard Athletic Complex: 90 acres Newport Folk Festival: 80 acres City Hall Plaza: 8 acres
So, if they want to max out the available space, this could go 5-7 stages.
Got to my hotel successfully (also got upgraded to a balcony looking at Fanuiel woot woot) gonna have a few beers and grab a bite to eat, then take in some great music!
The new place doesn't seem to be all that close to the T. Wonder how parking is, for people coming in from the burbs.
For the head of the charles they have a pretty big parking lot at harvard business school right next door for pretty cheap (~$10). And that event brings in 250,000 people per day. A lot of lower Allston isn't resident parking, and there's a bunch of lots right down the streets for boathouses nearby. Shouldn't be an issue at all.
If tonight was any indication of how the performances are gonna go this weekend, it's gonna be so good. The stone under your feet is rough as hell, and I will not miss that next year.

Sia was definitely my favorite out of all the Boston Calling performers I've ever seen. Great show! Loved every dancer. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Weather was perfect tonight and getting out of the city was a breeze.

I gave Sufjan the edge tonight just because his music felt more powerful to me. But that just comes from it being performed live. Both of them were incredible though. Art and music combining in some of the best ways possible. My bus got in very late so I ended up missing Hannigan/Dessner, which I was bummed about
No, this is like going to see the new X-Men movie, but it doesn't have the X-Men that you like in it. Boston Calling is still a music festival, with a diverse lineup, it didn't morph into ULTRA.
this sounds exactly like my experience actually going to see the new X-Men movie
