Tir Na Nog is shutting it's doors, I believe. I'm hoping the returning venue is Memorial Auditorium. That was the large place in between Fletchers & Kennedy Theaters (and get my hopes up for Sufjan). Not sure what the new venue would be.
Yes plz. It is about fucking time he stops avoiding all the festivals I have a chance of going to - it is like our love means nothing to him anymore.

I love the new avi <3
Heh, thanks : ) I somehow have gone this entire time without having Sufjan avatar on the forum....not sure why it has taken this long for me to go for gold.
Edit: But now it looks like Suf is SUPER BANNED. He doesn't deserve that - well, unless he continues to not play festivals I'm going to while playing plenty of others across the nation. So perhaps he does deserve it as of now

It's funny. This is the first time I can recall him playing outdoor festivals. He has in the past but it was always a theatre or auditorium or something that he was in.
With Animal Collective playing Chapel Hill in November, it's time to start thinking outside the box a bit, I think.
Ooo. It is way closer to Downtown. I think I'm thinking about something totally different.
Ha I've lived in the RDU area for the majority of my life and somehow also thought that Red Hat was much further from other downtown venues than it actually is.

I was thinking of Little Raleigh Theatre. I remembered we had to drive there a few years ago. I've never been to Red Hat, and honestly, never past Memorial.

Good morning fine people of Inforoo!
I haven't been active here for years, but I'm hoping to get some help regarding the Hopscotch festival. I'm now living about an hour and a half away from Raleigh and just caught wind of this festival. Looking over some of the past lineups this would definitely be something I'd be interested in, and I think it would also be neat to sample some of the different venues in Raleigh. So far I've only been to the Cat's Cradle to see Low a month or so ago (edit: and I just remembered that cat's cradle is in carrboro/chapel hill..whoops!).
I'm wondering how beneficial it would be to purchase VIP tickets. Looks like it provides priority access to club shows...are there instances where the club shows reach capacity and don't allow entry to those with GA tickets? Any other perks?
Also, what's the atmosphere like? With it being in the city I'd assume things aren't as...liberal...as a place like Bonarroo. Is the feel more similar to a regular concert than a festival?
Appreciate any other comments, tips, tricks any of you might have.

I did VIP last year (doing it this year as well) and there were a few shows at the smaller venues where the lines were pretty long and got in almost immediately. Bully at Slim's and the shows at Neptunes on Sunday night. I'm not sure how much we would have missed because of the lines. There was also a VIP only party at CAM last year which some of the bands attended (I think Slyvan Esso was there as well), which was pretty cool. They also handed out some goodie bags when you check in. The large venues didn't seem to have any problems with lines though so I guess it would be dependent on which venues you were interested in. $200 is also pretty cheap for an overall VIP package too.
I would agree that it felt like more just attending a series of concerts than an overall festival but you also get the intimacy of live music in small venues (mostly bars) which is works well.
If cash isn't an issue, go for it. It's one of the few festivals that I feel like you get your moneys worth going VIP. I've only had a few cases where it would have come in handy, but it's nice to not have to think about it, if it comes to that. That said, out of the 4 Hopscotch's I've done, only 1 was VIP and I've had little problems getting into anything I've really wanted to see.
It really depends on how you view city fests. I'm personally a fan of multiple venues. When you add the day parties and City Plaza shows (Headliners play outdoors) then you're looking at three full 14 hours a day worth of music. The fact that it's indoors, for the most part, will lead you to feel like it's a concert. Just in a lot of different places.

Thanks to you both for the info. Still on the fence about VIP, I'm just not sure if the convenience is worth the cash since I will be buying for my wife and myself. Maybe I'll hold off on VIP until next year and try to snag the early bird special.
I am pretty excited about the multiple venue aspect. I've never been to any type of city fest, but I'm assuming what you lack in the seclusion of a stand alone festival site you make up for in variety. Can't wait til the lineup drops!
Certainly plausible but I doubt it. Wye Oak played a few years ago and Flock Of Dimes played just last year. I'm hoping the Merge artists will be Bob Mould and/or Eric Bachmann. Bachman/Archers of Loaf are long overdue, imo.

Maybe. Just thought it was odd that they're not playing in NC. That's like their 2nd home.
Considering how many people line up on the sidewalks and enjoy the plaza shows for free basically, I wouldn't be surprised if they were interested in moving to a place that's more secure.
