Seems like they pulled together a decently strong rock lineup. The EDM is the shittiest portion of this line-up and even that has a lot of guilty pleasures.
Yeah, the EDM is a mixed bag for sure. However, having the more musical side of it (Gramatik, Beats Antique) and then some of the harder stuff like Excision, Snails (maybe Mustard??), will mean I'll get a few EDM sets in. I'm not going see Chainsmokers, and it would depend on who Porter was up against. I can't remember what I thought of Carnage last time I saw him, blurry.
You didn't see Reignwolf when he played Voodoo a couple years ago? I missed his fest set, but saw his cheap late night with like 2 dozen people. That shit was great. Ever better than his Hangout set that year.
I was at both shows and I met him in the NIN pit and they remembered me because of my skull headbands. <3 them so much, such a great show!
Instead of spending money to see Tool you guys could just come to where I work. We have an uneven staircase and I could just drop a bass guitar and drumset down it. It should sound similar to Tool. I'll even turn the lights on and off fast to simulate their great live show.
I believe Urban Dictionary (reputable source) has a succinct definition of it.
"A popular term referring to a sub-genre of hard rock strongly influenced by post-grunge and nu metal. Originating in the mid-late 90s, butt rock is comprised of raspy vocals, similar to Pearl Jam, Creed, or Nirvana, backed with radio-friendly guitar riffs, drum beats, and basic bass lines.
Generally found on CBS owned radio stations across the Midwest, Great Plains, and Southwest, butt rock is overly commercialized, processed music that lacks innovation and creativity. Butt rock predominantly targets a demographic of blue collar workers, generally men 18-45, that drink cheap light beer, have a fascination with big trucks, avidly watch Monday Night Football, and are wannabe UFC fighters.
Butt rock groups include Nickelback, Seether, Theory of a Deadman, 3 Doors Down, Breaking Benjamin, Staind, Puddle of Mudd, Three Days Grace, Five Finger Death Punch, amongst others."
after the initial shock of seeing The Weeknd and the underwhelming second line it's actually a pretty good lineup, especially for the standard low ticket price. Actually its the best Voodoo undercard in the past few years. Not that the undercard is super great or anything, its just that recent Voodoo undercards have been so abysmal my expectations were really low. On this undercard there are numerous acts I'd at least be interested in seeing, as already listed many times by posts above this.
I still think if I hit a festival this weekend it will be hulaween though.
Just heard from my middle kid who just woke up and said, "fuck Hulaween" which is 100% his element. He was the last holdout as he was still going to Suwanee as of last night. I totally want to go and 100% would any other weekend. But it's not happening. You know it will be great, and it's all the shit I see throughout the year anyway. Interestingly there are 6 crossover acts between the two festivals this year.
It's any rock band on which you can hear somewhat comment "hey man! I like it like, like when the singer goes like 'raaaaaawwwwrrrrr!!!' that shit is fuckin cool man!!"
That's basically blanketing all of the bands under the buttrock umbrella (fine mix of metaphors). I don't listen to radio, but as far as I know, only Tool and Cage the Elephant have had any consistent radio play. And I could see those two, plus Ghost and maybe Puscifer appear on buttrock fest that included the earlier defined examples.
Rebelution is reggae. The Reggae genre and the Buttrock genre are sooo like distant cousins.
At this point, "buttrock" is more than just a narrow grouping of bands, it's a mentality with a wide spectrum. There are some EDM acts that probably qualify - including, oddly enough, Excision.
Man, is there any band name more perfect for a bunch of white guys playing reggae than "Rebelution?" OAR must be pissed they didn't think of that.
Bad Ass sax protege' Khris Royal joined them last year and I think plays full time with them now. He's also got his own band (Dark Matter), plays often with Gravity A and also George Porter Jr.'s Runnin' Pardners. He played a few shows with Greenhouse Lounge out of Florida (MF R.I.P.), and he adds a cool dimension to Rebelution. khrisroyalmusic.com/about/
Snails = Buttrock of EDM
While I agree, his shows are always f'n crazy parties. I guess that's okay because some butt rock is greater than almost all cock rock.
I wish Roo could/would have booked Anderson .Paak, Chairlift, Seratones, and Little Scream.
Have seen Anderson.Paak and Free Nationals, but do you have a short note on each of the other 3? I plan to look at everything I don't already know, but I'm f'n jammed at work today so far. Gracias.

I liked Chairlift's first album, but the second album they had just finished doing work with someone poppy (I want to say Beyonce or someone like that) and it is completely different. I am not sure if I am about it.

I liked Charlift's newest album. It is pop, so you may not like it. It's good music to dance to. Check out the track Moth. Seratones are a band from Shreveport who are similar to Alabama Shakes in sound. Look up their song Chandelier on YouTube. They got great reviews at SxSW. Little Scream is folky art rock.
lol all that advert by HOF saying weeknd was exclusive to HOF. this year looks like a lot of fun. might have to figure out a way to make this one.
Didn't they do the same with Foo Fighters last year? Someone kept coming in the ACL thread saying they wouldn't be there, though their tour dates were open and they were in the area, because some radio DJ announced them as a festival exclusive to Hangout.

I think the difference is, Hangout announced the Weeknd as an exclusive.
