Granted I'm biased, but if you watch this entire video and still claim Tool is butt rock then I just can't help you. Just b/c butt rock stations have some Tool in their rotation doesn't mean that Tool doesn't push the envelope and watch it bend.
The crescendo/final 2:00 or so of this song is my favorite piece of music ever written.
I embrace my desire to feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow to feel inspired, to fathom the power, to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain, to swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human.
With my feet upon the ground I lose myself between the sounds and open wide to suck it in, I feel it move across my skin. I'm reaching up and reaching out, I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me. And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been. We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been
Spiral out... Keep going...
Other standout non-butt Rock tracks: Jambi Third Eye Pushit H. The Patient The Grudge (wonderful usage of alchemy as a metaphor to let go of your grudges by turning those leaden weights on your soul into gold) Wings for Marie part 1 and 2 (about his Mom's 27 year battle after a devastating aneurysm - 27 years = approx 10,000 Days (album title) for trivia minded individuals out there) The mind-blowing drum work in Rosetta Stoned
FFS people? Tool is like NIN in that they have a subset of awful fans, but both bands transcend their respective genres and are anything but buttrock.
NIN is superior to Tool in every way possible, except drumming obv. Their fans are nowhere near as bad either.
Apples and Oranges though, obv.
Agreed on all counts, though that's partially also because Trent has continued to push himself forward in the past decade whereas Tool has done... something different.
Big thing with Tool is also that they've heavily toured the Red States during their career and thus attract the same crowd that would otherwise go to shitty rock acts.
And the band is more than faux-intellectualism; their sense of humor alone separates them from widely reviled buttrock acts.

Just because it is buttrock...doesn't mean it sucks. Their music (10,000 days excluded) was mind blowing for its time. However, the majority of their fan base now (post-Lateralus) is PURE buttrock loving close minded jackasses. Their music is still played on the radio mixed in with buttrock. They're buttrock, dude. You lose. Good day, sir.
FWIW, there's nothing more buttrock that supplementing your songs with faux-intellectualism. Like, "Fight Club" is a buttrock movie. Tool is the "Fight Club" of buttrock bands.
This is a pretty on-point comparison!
Also, Longinus is correct when he says most Tool fans are close minded etc etc Like, when Lateralus came out that was THE album for me, after having obsessed over Undertow and Aenima for years. Then.....they didn't do shit for years, and !0K Days was weak.
I moved on with my life into new shit. Tool obsession is a prime example of living in the past.
If they drop some epic album they can redeem themselves somewhat.
I don't know, I am way more into prolific musicians than artsy fartsy perfectionists.
of Montreal, Zappa, The Mars Volta, that is shit I can get behind and have nice discographies to explore.

Your superiority boner is showing. Could you tuck it back in?

It's cute how made you get when people make fun of Fight Club.

Eh, its a lot more Tool than Fight Club. I still love their albums and they were a defining band for me growing up. I don't really mind the comparison to Fight Club, its fairly apt. But doesn't mean neither of those things have merit. Just means their fans made it cool and easy to poke fun at.
NIN were dangerously close to falling into buttrock land forever. They were definitely down in it for quite some time during the With Teeth > Year Zero > The Slip era. I feel like calling it quits for a bit and coming out with Hesitation Marks broke them out of it. That was a refreshing album and the shows for that tour were the best since Fragility tours. Who knows if his next move puts them back in the crack to share Gods of buttrock title with Tool.
If Tool can put out a new album that's refreshing, they might can bust out of that butt crack too. That's never going to happen though. They're going to milk the past as long as we're all willing to pay a hundo a pop to see them play it live.

I think that last sentence is an unnoticed truth. It wasn't as if Tool sought out chumpy rock fans. But they come with the territory. My history with them was seeing them second from the bottom at Lolla 93, opening night summer tour 2010 and back to back nights in Pensacola and New Orleans this January. So assuming I make it alive to Voodoo, this will be my 5th time seeing them. I actually jacked Aenima and Lateralus CDs from the exwife. One of these days I need to get Undertow and 10000 Days.

I still disagree on the terms of Buttrock but it appears I'm in the minority. Rock on the Range is buttrock. KanRocksas or whatever it was called is buttrock. Larger Than Life Fest is buttrock. Eminem is rap-buttrock. I just don't put Tool in that category.

Well we might not no what "faux" means in here but we sure do know what "stereotype" means.
I remember when Tool were announced as HLs for Roo back in 2007 and a lot of people were up in arms.
Read those 2007 reviews - many of those had an extreme change of heart after actually seeing their set. I remember talking to numerous people the following day after their first dose of tool and the one thing I heard over and over was "wow - I had no idea"
There my favorite band of all time so apologies for defending them so staunchly against the butt-rock moniker (obviously I have a negative connotation about that "classification) but there is a reason they still headline after nary a single new anything in over a decade.
I'd love to hear reviews from inforoo from those that will be seeing them for the first time in October.

Wait till you get a load of Aftershock Festival lineup that's about to drop.

This will actually be my 7th time seeing them. I've seen them all five times that they have played here, drove to Biloxi to see them in the early 00s and then this show. They will always be one of my favorite bands, butt rock or not. I love Maynard and as long as he can sing like he does I will see any and all Maynard projects.

Good headliners (though I am not a fan of the Weeknd) but boy does it drop off. I only see a handful of artists after Arcade Fire that I would actually want to see
Just want to thank you all for a number of hardy laughs about buttrock over the last few pages. Even though at this point, I still have no idea what buttrock actually is.
