Anyone know when the Voodoo lineup generally drops? This is my first year going. Also, any tips?
Tips would be to harden your liver before you come to town, even if you don't drink that much. Voodoo is a party festival. They set it up where it can be whatever you want it to be. For instance, some of the younger attendees may never leave the EDM area. Other people may follow rock or alternative all day. Still others might want funk and NOLA stuff.
The last few years, there have been 4 stages. The main stage caters to a mix of independent acts, rappers, rock bands and headliners. The Le Plur stage is almost solely EDM and EDM styled acts. The other two stages alternate between weird, alternative, jazz, local stuff, rock, rap and other random genres they might bring in. So if you are into rock, hiphop and jazz, you can do that. You can post up all day at either of the smaller stages and have rail. No one goes early in the day, so if you have an act you want to post up for at either the main stage or the EDM stage, you can get front center pretty easily. You can also usually get really close 15-20 minutes before an act comes on (depending obviously).
Some other things that come to mind are that Voodoo will put anyone after anyone else on the rock and rap stages. So a stage can go from My Chemical Romance to Soundgarden, or like this year, Clutch > Santigold > Ozzy & Friends. They don't necessarily mesh genres in succession by stage.
Food is usually decent. It's easy to bicycle there, and that's what I'd recommend to anyone. Security can be onerous, but once you're in, they pretty much leave you alone. If you think of anything else, let us know and we'll try to help you out.
Making my first visit to the city and Voodoo this year. Pretty excited! I'm an annual Firefly attendee but we decided to try something different this year and we've always wanted to check out New Orleans. Two birds, one stone kinda thing.

I'd like a Porter Robinson/Bassnectar/NERO (I know thats slim to none with them playing Buku, but im kinda a HUGE fan!) style EDM headliner
Kendrick got announced for Essence. I didn't look at the whole lineup, but I saw Brand New Heavies was playing. I did t know they were still around.
Essence sucks and yes got Kendrick. Mariah Carey, Maxwell, Ciara, Also on the lineup are New Edition, Babyface, Charlie Wilson, Faith Evans, Leon Bridges, Jeremih, Lion Babe, Dej Loaf, The Internet, BJ The Chicago Kid, Cyril Neville, Daley, Digable Planets, Doug E. Fresh, Eric Bellinger, Estelle, Jidenna, Judith Hill, Kelly Price, Lady Leshurr, Lala Hathaway, Little Simz, Mali Music, MC Lyte, Tyrese, The Brand New Heavies, Preservation Hall Brass Band, the New Breed Brass Band, Tink and V. Bozeman.
Doug E. Fresh, New Edition and MC Lyte are the only thing on that billing worth paying to see at Essence...I take that back, there is nothing worth the money of Essence playing this year.

Haha. I'd totally check out Brand New heavies though. They were pretty cool back in the 90s playing that acidic jazz and funk. I like em anyway, but I'm not going to Essence.

I noticed Digable Planets in that mix after I posted this. They were awesome in the 90s...still not going to Essence. Missy Elliot ruined me for Essence with her horrible performance, not even Usher could save the evening. If Prince ever returns, then they can have my money again.
I enjoyed the lounge stages at Essence and that's where everything I'd want to see this year would be. It's just too massive of an event to see what's going on at the main stage and it's mostly a sitting crowd anyhow. Floor tickets are outrageous and kind of out of the question.
Essence for Prince was a....memorable experience. I'm still mentally scarred from staring at the massive live #blacktwitter feed looking like Matrix code with Doug E. Fresh's froggy head bopping around MC'ing awkward shit during setbreaks.
Would take Prince to get me to go back to that shit lol Didn't check out the lounge stages. Was too melted to leave my seat, plus Janelle>Nile>Prince, I mean, no reason to get up.
Def hope Voodoo doesn't get Tool, don't want to sit through their music video catalog again. That shit was weak as fuck.

I don't think that Tool would really be back so soon. And I don't think that they are actually going to do much more touring this year. More likely to see Puscifer.

I don't think Puscifer would translate to a festival very well. APC def would though, as they did at Voodoo '03.
I'm glad I already got my ticket taken care of.
If the lineup isn't great this year I'm going to Hulaween though.

you do know the 2 and 3 headliners last year were Florence and ZBB right?

Actually the headliners last year were Florence / Ozzy and Friends / Deadmau5 (cancelled because of rain/mud apocalypse) ZBB was supposed to play before deadmau5 sunday afternoon.
He's joking like we do every year in this thread. We all know GnR (or any other stadium band) isn't playing a fest with $100 early birds dickets no matter how top heavy the fest is.
While we're on the subject I feel like Alabama Shakes, Ryan Adams, or My Morning Jacket are all strong potential candidates to be the soft headliner this year.
Puscifer was good at Bonnaroo at 12. It was a weird daytime slot though. I'm not going to do Hulaween this year, but if it is on par with last year and Voodoo goes Live Nation generic, I might look at it for 2017.
Feels like we'll get 1 of Radiohead, Iron Maiden, Arcade Fire, Kendrick, or LCD. Some cheesy EDM, buttrock, rap, etc headliner depending on #1 And one of the soft ones mentioned earlier.

Arcade Fire haven't headlined anything in New Orleans for a couple of years, they'd make a lot of sense for Voodoo.
Melody will be at Adele in Atlanta that weekend with every female in my immediate family so I'll be wide open that weekend. Hard to picture a Voodoo lineup that could tear me away from finally getting crunchy at Hulaween.
that is unless Phish plays somewhere in the south that weekend.

Thanks! Halloween is definitely a major reason we decided on the trip. It works out pretty well. We're coming in Thursday morning and staying until the following Thursday. So we'll do Voodoo, then have Halloween on Monday and another couple days to explore the city.

Can't wait. We're coming in Thursday morning and staying for a full 7 nights so we can explore the city after the festival. Staying in the 'Warehouse district'(?) to save money since we're going to be there for a full week, but we're happy to walk or Uber or whatever to get around.
And as unrealistic as it may be, I would do terrible things for those headliners!

We're staying at the Old 77 Hotel. Had pretty good reviews and the price was right. Seemed to be within decent proximity of the French Quarter and the park so I went ahead and booked it in a package deal with flight and stuff. I'll definitely be looking for some guidance here, seems like a knowledgeable group
Warehouse district rules and would be my first choice of where I would live if I wasn't paying offspring bills. There is douchey shit there but also some of the best shit the city has in the way of top restaurants (Emerils, Peche, Tommy's, Cochon, etc) and some awesome bars and clubs. Howlin Wolf did an outrageous Voodoo show for Funk Sabbath last year. You are 3-4 minutes walk to the CBD, a few blocks more to the French Quarter and then another 12 or so to the Marigny. Good choice
That's like 3 blocks from where my office is. I never walk or drive that street; so I didn't know that place. But you can't go wrong in that neighborhood.

Glad to hear! I didn't know much about it when I booked except that the price was right and it seemed to be in a good location. There were so many hotel options it was tough to wrap my head around.
