As long as the place is nice, you picked a good spot to base. All the locals and regionals on this thread will be able to help you with anything and particularly restaurants.
Throw in Arcade Fire (they seem to love New Orleans) or LCD Soundsystem, and that's about as close to a perfect top line as I'd ever imagine realistically seeing.

That Old 77 Hotel is pretty sweet. My old roommate that lives in Antarctica stayed there when Ghost played the Civic last year. (had to do an Antarctica name drop)

Oh shit. That's where Compere Lapin is. I've been wanting to eat there since it opened last year. I think that was a Caribbean chef that came to New Orleans for Top Chef or Master Chef or something and decided to stay. It's not cheap, but it's been on my radar for a while. comperelapin.com/assets/content/siteFiles/CLDinner-menu-1.3.16.pdf
Thats awesome!! Know where yall are staying yet? If you need any tips/guidance on anything, post it in here.. We have a few NOLA locals that are eager to please!
We're staying at the Old 77 Hotel. Had pretty good reviews and the price was right. Seemed to be within decent proximity of the French Quarter and the park so I went ahead and booked it in a package deal with flight and stuff. I'll definitely be looking for some guidance here, seems like a knowledgeable group
This is a very nice hotel. We have our guestbooks in the room there. I work at Where New Orleans (a tourist magazine), since you are staying for 7 days I can get you things to do and send you some freebie stuff. Just remind me closer to the festival.

I'm staying at the Old 77 for the first time jazzfest 2nd weekend. glad to hear from others in this thread its a nice place, certainly looks cool. definitely a good location.
Making my first visit to the city and Voodoo this year. Pretty excited! I'm an annual Firefly attendee but we decided to try something different this year and we've always wanted to check out New Orleans. Two birds, one stone kinda thing.
I was in a similar boat last for last year. Firefly was the only "large scale" festival I had been to. I went with 4 friends. We only actually made it for Friday of Voodoo. We were out until 5AM on Friday and by the time we were even able to get ourselves together to go anywhere it was around 5PM on Saturday. We decided to go back to the French Quarter since it was already raining and figured to get back to Voodoo on Sunday. Sunday was eventually rained out which was a bummer.
Nevertheless Voodoo Fest was an amazing time. The crowds at each stage are very manageable. We were able to get up to basically the front for Jack U even though we got there basically when they started playing. Florence & the Machine was a bit more crowded but was still able to get a good spot. The small stages for the smaller acts you can get up to the front without much problem. The vibe of the festival basically mirrors New Orleans. Everyone is just having a blast. It's really a giant party. Not in the "bro" way many think of Firefly, but in the "anything goes, dress up as whatever the fuck you want, have a great time" type of way. Make sure you have costumes, because 90% of the people WILL have on costumes on the entire time. It just makes the whole festival that much more fun. Water is easy to get, food is easy to get, overall I didn't have any issues whatsoever with the festival logistics.
That said, make sure you get out to the French Quarter and the rest of New Orleans. For us, Voodoo was only a piece of the experience. We were lucky that we had a friend in NOLA that knows the owner of several of the clubs (Dragons Den, etc.) so we didn't pay a cover and drank basically for free the whole weekend. There are so many places you need to check out the list is endless. The Halloween parade is a lot of fun, and nobody really cares if you walk in the parade with everyone. There are parades that go around everywhere, the whole weekend basically 24/7. Hell, you could probably just start your own parade if you wanted to. We joined one of the floats and they let us stay on there for a minute and bang a bunch of drums, it was pretty hilarious.
If you haven't booked your spot already, book it just north of the French Quarter. For us that was perfect. You can walk both to the festival (the longer walk but not bad) and to the French Quarter.

Awesome, thanks! I'll be sure to remind you closer to fest time.

Great info, thanks. We did already book just south of the FQ. Got a great package deal so I pulled the trigger. Looks like it will be quite a walk but I'm open to paying for other transportation if it's a huge issue (which I'm sure it will be after drinking all day). This is our first time in NO so we're gonna stay for a full week and try to take in as much as possible. I'm looking at Voodoo as just icing on the cake. I wasn't sure about the costumes... I knew some people wore them but had no idea it was so many. I should have assume considering it's Halloween weekend. Duh.
I'm still holding out hope that Firefly will sell single day passes this year. I'd definitely go on whatever day Florence is playing and not have to worry about camping, etc. Tame Impala and M83 were 2 of the main reasons I wanted to do Firefly again, but the music gods did me a solid and sent them to Merriweather to co-headline the Thursday before Firefly.

There wouldn't even have to be an undercard for me if Radiohead, Tool and Arcade Fire were the headliners. I don't even think I would step foot near the Le Plur stage either which I'm sure most would find hard to believe.

Some of them live here (Win for sure).
I didn't know Win lives there! It makes sense, though; it's a confluence of his Houston background and Régine's French(-Canadian) background.
Anyone done VIP before? How is it? Seems to be pretty affordable compared to other fests.
It's fine. Front of stage access is nice at the main stage but not as nice as it used to be, since every year they shrink the the space for VIPs. Both the main stage VIP front row and Le Plur VIP front row are pretty routinely full for the headliners. The VIP cargo containers at the main stage are fairly worthless unless you get right on the cargo container rail, and there isn't a ton of rail space.
There is also front row access to the smaller stages which is cool but really not necessary since the crowds are never that large at those stages.
I did not attend in 2015, but in 2014 I was left feeling VIP wasn't really worth it anymore, even considering how cheap the VIP pre sale ticket can be, simply because you are no longer guaranteed a spot in the VIP section at the main stage.

I did LOA for almost 5 years. After 2014, I will never do it again. They have constantly reduced the perks that are included (including the size of the LOA viewing pits) and it isn't worth it. You can get front row at any GA show you want if you are willing to sit for the big shows.
EDIT: You can search my posts in this thread for a HUGE bitch session after the 2014 Voodoo. It has all of my issues that year and includes the issues with LOA.
I think since Arcade Fire is absent from the Outside Lands lineup they will most likely be at Voodoo.
I'd be okay with them closing Friday or Sunday. They'll be some rock (likely Saturday), but I haven't remotely been able to guess who will be the rock or alternative headliner. Foos played 14 and are on hiatus, Ozzy played last year, G&R is doing Superdome and RHCP is playing Jazz Fest. I'm hopeful that Priest would get the sub-headliner Saturday in Jane's Addiction spot from last year. I just don't know who is big enough to do the HL slot that would be available. Obviously Black Sabbath farewell would be Top 1 want for me. But if they could pull the random card and get U2 or something not as hard but no less big, that's okay too. It could be Linkin Park which a lot of people will hate, but they're someone I would give an opportunity to run me off. I'm not a fan, but the show would be big enough to give it a chance from the back.
I'm sure Big Gigantic will get headliner/subheadliner with their new album coming out. That will feature about every type of music they can think of playing and will have a ton of vocalists and musicians on it. That should be good live even if it's just Jeremy and Dominic performing. Bassnectar is probably due back since he hasn't played it since 2014 and hasn't played the city since Buku 2015. I just don't want "house" again for the main EDM side. I ignored that stage last year whereas the other last few years there were one or two sets a day worth it for me to check out. It would also be nice to see a big name rap act or two that isn't playing everywhere else. Since Three 6 is rumored to be reuniting, that could be cool.
There will probably be some wimpy shit e.g. Cromeo and typical other fest b.s. that I don't want to see. But I'm curious as to what they're going to do. Lineup usually comes out in June I think, so it's not that far away.
I know the lineup won't drop until June most likely, but are there usually any credible leaks or rumors floating around for this fest? Or is it pretty mum?

Depends. We have gotten the lineup a couple days before the lineup drop in the last couple years. One of my friends, sometimes gives me insider info, but he is planning a wedding this year, so I don't see that happening.
Usually there are some sort of leaks, but like I said besides getting the lineup a couple days early it is only tidbits.

Voodoo can be tough to crack. I joined the board in 2014 because I got a tip from someone I work with. Apparently a Houston radio host who's show also broadcasts here (or used to) spilled the beans. She wrote down what she could, and we knew they'd be announcing Slayer, Melvins, etc. That was my first post, and I wouldn't have ever joined had Jabco posted the text I sent him earlier that day. I pretty much vanished from the web in 2009. But since I would pass by here every few days to check in on festivals, and I wanted to get the information to everyone on that thread (VC, Longinus, Postjack, Blotter, etc.), I went ahead and joined.
There should be some rumors, and I'll post whatever I hear. I've never gotten around to comparing lineups that closely, but they often share a major headliner with other festivals such as ACL, Lollapalooza, Hangout or whatever (sometimes the year before or after) and obviously several acts that are doing the circuit that year. But since it's sort of late in the year and doesn't really coincide with many other festivals except ACL, sometimes Voodoo gets a headliner that is at the end or beginning of a headliner run. Also, they usually bring something you didn't see coming like the Ozzy superjam last year. Rest assured there will also be a cheesy 90's act or two on the bill.
Voodoo doesn't give you much jam (Lettuce was last year, but jam heads and bands are all at Hulaween), but they usually will have a bounce rap act or two.
Edi to say that the press will get advance information. You'll have to beg Phein! in May, and he may be able to confirm or deny some acts.
If there was one act I'd want them to bring, I'd like to see Suicidal Tendencies play Voodoo as a side stage show. /ST
Yea, I would def like to see ST this year. I literally caught the last 30 seconds of them opening for Mastodon late night at Civic on Halloween due to taking forever to make it down there after Voodoo mudfest for Ozzy.
Didn't really see anyone who was muddy and had been at Ozzy, was surprised.

I didn't even know they were in town. Damn. I knew about Mastadon, but I knew there was no possible way to do it. I haven't seen 'em since Republic was still Howlin' Wolf.

That is the last time I saw them also. I had NO idea they opened for Mastodon at the Civic last year.
