I think Nine Inch Nails and Tool were outliers in the butt rock genre, if you have to include them in it at all. What sets them apart in my mind is that I could still listen to them and enjoy it. If a song came on in a bar, I'd appreciate it. I'm not going to seek it out. And both are great live. I'm not about to go listen to a Korn, Limp Bizkit, or Staind album any time soon, but I loved them in the late 90s.
Imagine a world...of buttrock...that is like a 7 layer shit dip.
Tool is top tier Deftones, The Sword, Ghost, etc - 2nd tier RHCP, PJ, Foo, etc - 3rd tier Rob Zombie, Korn, Megadeth, Lamb of God, etc - 4th tier Shinedown, Disturbed, FFDP, etc 5th tier P.O.D., Limp Bizkit, etc 6th tier Theory of a Dead Mang & Buck Cherry - bottom tier.
I really don't have time to accurately place this shit in tiers. But you get the point, right?
The first few layers don't seem too band. It's those bottom layers that fucking suck.
And this goes back to my point a few pages ago. Where the line is drawn is a matter of opinion. How desperate are you to get rocked? Are you a halfway kinda girl like me or are you a "It ain't easy bein' cheesy" bih willing to hear ALL about that Dead Mang theory?

Yeah, its almost like a lot of those bands don't have a damn thing in common other than being rock bands. I don't really consider tier 2 to be buttrock either and even tier 3 is debatable.

aahhhwhhhh well now we're just busting it all open and getting into the C-O-C-K rock territory!!
"Cock Rock is an offshoot of '80s hair metal which was known for containing cheesy, dirty lyrics. Bands consisting of horny guys that play catchy, rip-off rock songs whose mail goal is to get girls. Usually the lyrics were about things like how big your dick is or cumming all over the place, or how hard you rock, how hard you rocked or how hard you are going to rock."

Ok, you might be right, I need to work on tier 2. Deftones probably don't belong in buttrock anymore actually. I shouldn't have thrown them in the mix, but it was hard coming up with 7 layers. The Sword and Ghost are def falling off though.
As for Tier 3. That one is pretty spot on. RHCP, PJ, or Foo have perfected their buttrocking craft. They are kings of the radio for doing nothing more than making songs that all sound the same.
Are there rock bands that aren't buttrock at this point? I would assume Spoon is safe...
Is Arctic Monkeys Buttrock?
I was just gonna ask about Arctic Monkeys, because they're a 'rock' band that the hip types around here would appreciate. I would say the 'britrock' doesn't count as 'buttrock', but Muse seems like they could qualify into these really dumb, broad blankets being brought out for buttrock.

Just want to thank you all for a number of hardy laughs about buttrock over the last few pages. Even though at this point, I still have no idea what buttrock actually is.

No, Arctic Monkeys are an "indie" act that has ascended to Buttrock Stardom. They're similar to Foals, Kings of Leon or the Black Keys, all of whom are noted buttrockers with "indie" roots.
So before I post some thoughts about the bottom of the card, if you really want to know the meaning of butt rock, pull up the album cover of The Pretty Reckless "Going to Hell."
It's not safe for work, but a GIS overview should help alleviate getting in trouble. Is her butt hell, and if so, do you wanna go there?

i don't think theyre really hard enough to be buttrock.
So this is based on an extremely basic and quick search of info and videos where available. I decided to put the bottom tier acts I didn't know that mostly weren't covered by others sort of in order of acts I might want to see or not. Here goes:
Will see barring conflicts
The Pretty Reckless - Was recommended a few pages back. They are a 3 piece rock band out of NYC. I liked the video for Going to Hell, though it's kind of evil.
Cakes Da Killa - Rapper out of New Jersey; the videos I skimmed were pretty good, so I'll probably try to check him out.
All Them Witches - Harder Rock but with some bluesy tinge to it.
Party Favor - Trap DJ; sounds pretty good.
Lookas - Trap Producer; also sounds pretty good
4B - Fast Dub Producer/DJ; this would probably be an early set, but I wouldn't have a problem stopping by
May Give Them A Chance
Seratones - Agree with the Alabama Shakes reference though Seratones may be a bit more jangly sounding
Kidd Love - Trip Hop DJ
Little Scream - Singer (art/folk as referenced prior)
Bully - Indie/Alternative band out of Nashville fronted by female lead singer; I probably would have passed by at Hangout if I would have gone.
Saint Motel - Sort of Indie-Unique (Indie-Progressive????)
Lunice - Bass and Trap DJ out of Montreal who also works with Hudson Mohawke as 1/2 of TNGHT
Bear Hands - Sort of modern rock, maybe a little experimental? A little song-y though the band seems talented.
Not much interest
Tory Lanez - Too R&B for me but a decent rapper at times Wild Belle - Guy & Girl duo out of Chicagoland; various styles; seems talented Nothing But Thieves - Indie-Alternative from the UK; seems a bit song-y for my tastes Oh Wonder - Pop duo out of London; sort of chill, white R&B
Not bothering unless someone seriously recommends Snakehips - British duo mixing R&B and electronic Melanie Martinez - This was a contestant on The Voice. It's about as bubblegum as I've ever heard. I couldn't take much of this. NF - White Christian Rapper from Michigan Lost Kings - Housey, R&B, Song-y, etc. Cheat Codes - Sounds like British Invasion 2nd Wave (e.g. The The, Haircut 100, etc.) and is sort of in the new wave vein; there isn't much out there Slaves - 6 piece rock band out of Sac-town; has a bit of the Foster the People, pop-rock vibe Sonny Alven - Electro House DJ

Being labeled "indie" rock should be just as condescending as being labeled buttrock in itself.
Black Keys started out garage/blues rock and became indie rock. Kings of Leon started out southern garage rock and became indie rock But with certain bands like Arcade Fire they pretty much started out as indie rock...but are now trying to evolve into something more...dancy fun stuffs.
Indie is basically a term I think of to describe something that is too bland to be be described with using another music genre.
BEHOLD! BUTT ROCK MECCA. THE THREE CELESTIAL LEVELS OF BUTT ROCK. THE SEVEN LAYER BUTT ROCK DIP. extra frijoles and queso.
For the record, I can understand Tool being considered 'butt rock' (the majority of their fans are undeniably pompous, which is why Maynard shuns them), but I have always labeled them as 'progressive metal'.

I still disagree on the terms of Buttrock but it appears I'm in the minority. Rock on the Range is buttrock. KanRocksas or whatever it was called is buttrock. Larger Than Life Fest is buttrock. Eminem is rap-buttrock. I just don't put Tool in that category.
I don't think KanRocksas is what you think it is, but A Perfect Circle played that.
So did Ween, STS9, Flaming Lips...
I think he meant Rockfest which is in Kansas City. That is the dictionary definition of buttrock.
