BEHOLD! BUTT ROCK MECCA. THE THREE CELESTIAL LEVELS OF BUTT ROCK. THE SEVEN LAYER BUTT ROCK DIP. extra frijoles and queso.
For the record, I can understand Tool being considered 'butt rock' (the majority of their fans are undeniably pompous, which is why Maynard shuns them), but I have always labeled them as 'progressive metal'.
No, Arctic Monkeys are an "indie" act that has ascended to Buttrock Stardom. They're similar to Foals, Kings of Leon or the Black Keys, all of whom are noted buttrockers with "indie" roots.
Being labeled "indie" rock should be just as condescending as being labeled buttrock in itself.
Black Keys started out garage/blues rock and became indie rock. Kings of Leon started out southern garage rock and became indie rock But with certain bands like Arcade Fire they pretty much started out as indie rock...but are now trying to evolve into something more...dancy fun stuffs.
Indie is basically a term I think of to describe something that is too bland to be be described with using another music genre.
Indie rock as a genre can definitely be made fun of, but KOL and Black Keys have hardly evolved to that at all. They're more in line with traditional mainstream southern/blues rock that has always had a different aesthetic than buttrock.

I mean, if I could see Whores > Baroness > Meshuggah > Primus > Slayer > Tool in ONE day that is a mother fucking win right there. I wouldn't even bother going the second day.

Tool started out balls to the wall rock n roll. Opiate > Undertow Then became Progressive Metal. Ænima > Lateralus Them became some boring art rock bullshit. 10,000 days That is basically a downward spiral of running out of steam and ideas.
Primus, Slayer, and Tool are all great. After that, only a few of the bands on the left are respectable and everything else is garbage of the highest degree

I think Rocklahoma is the mecca of Butt Rock, but I tend to lump hair metal into that category.
So this is based on an extremely basic and quick search of info and videos where available. I decided to put the bottom tier acts I didn't know that mostly weren't covered by others sort of in order of acts I might want to see or not. Here goes:
Will see barring conflicts
All Them Witches - Harder Rock but with some bluesy tinge to it.
I thought they were great at SK. Definitely some Doors and Floyd in their dna and the lead singer's voice is reminiscent of Mark Lanegan or Brendan Perry...and they're not afraid to jam one out.
Can anyone give me their best guess as to when the first price increase might happen? A week? A month?
Depends on demand. They usually sell quick and then take them off the market until later in the summer and reintroduce around $200 or so and they'll keep going up all the way until the end when people are scrambling for $275 tickets. It's just one of those things that's pretty much automatically going to be worth $100 regardless of the lineup so it's kind of a no brainer. The $99 tickets can always be resold for a profit.
However, the $140's might just be a certain amount until "x" day since tickets have been off the market since the pre-sale. And they'll go up to $175, $200, $225, $250 etc. I think I read on their facebook that there is a monthly payment plan. That can't be expensive.

Last year it was every couple months. They had five price tiers (!!!). Then they had to refund and it was a cluster, so I don't think they are going to go crazy and have that many tiers. I think this will be the price for a couple months and then they will increase it again.
But honestly, they are so unpredictable and change shit every year it is anyone's guess.
I saw an article that stated the term "butt rock" came from the idea that some people listen to "nothing but rock". Seems a little far fetched, but I guess makes sense. If you've ever been to the Gulf Coast (whether it be MS, AL, or FL) and you find a rock station, that's all going to be butt rock.
Also, I've been checking out bands all afternoon and the upper middle tier is nothing but stuff for the youths. A lot of EDM-infused pop/hip hop/rock that all kinda sounds the same.
Tim and Ler live over there. It's convenient for them to play and get that paycheck. Pretty much why NYE show happens every year in Oakland. That's probably the only 2 shows Primus plays this year.
You got Claypool-Lennon instead though! Thats pretty awesome. Seen Primus a bunch of times and its always fun, but who knows how long CLD will be a thing. Take advantage while you can. This is coming from someone who made the mistake of bailing on Oysterhead back in the day and is still kicking themselves.

Don't get me wrong, I'm stoked about seeing them, I just want Primus too. #greedy

Which line(s)? In my mind, only line 2 is weak but that is probably because Live Nation is graduating G. easy and Band of Horses. Cage and Foals (line 3) probably have earned the push a little more.
Line 5 is the best line on the poster (Tribe, Mutemath, Lennon/Claypool and Puscifer).
Line 4 is cool with me. I don't have any problem with rebelution. Excision plays that hard dubstep. Gramatik is more of a composer and producer than a DJ and usually works with live instrumentalists (Gibbs, Griz, guys in Exmag, etc). Gramatik live is underrated and will rule. Ghost is a Swedish Doom band.
4 and 5 seem like upper mid, but if 6, that's a little more what you were saying except Beats Antique is high performance art.
Also I appreciate/am kind of surprised that so many people on here would see Porter Robinson.
2013 Hangout he brought a dub set. 2015 Buku he did his Porter Live show which was good live. I don't often listen to him, but when I saw him the shows were good. If he was annoying me and I had him slotted in my schedule (e.g. They oppose the Weeknd with him), I'd leave just like anything else that I wasn't digging.
Edit to say Voodoo tweeted Porter is doing Porter Live.

I need to go back and look at it, but I was exaggerating. I agree that line 5 is great.

Okay so here are the bands I was lumping together that I assumed were big with the youths, based both on style and honestly plays on Spotify (which if you go based on Spotify alone, G-Eazy and Chainsmokers are ten times as popular as Arcade Fire):
G-Eazy Chainsmokers Kevin Gates Porter Robinson Carnage Excision Tory Lanez Alison Wonderland DJ Mustard
That's as far as I made it today before I left work.
yeah that's some younger shit. It's all different though. Of what you listed, I like Kevin Gates (Baton Rouge rapper) and Excision. G Easy is alright. And I'll probably try to see some of Mustard if no conflicts are scheduled. There are some worthwhile electronica acts to check out though. Gramatik is great and Beats Antique is always entertaining.

Are there any turntablists on the lineup this year?
2012 was sick with Invisibl Skratch Piklz (however they spelled it) and Kid Koala, which was my all time favorite DJ/electronic music show at Voodoo.
So I had heard The Chainsmokers in passing but actually looked them up and saw their big hit is called "#selfie." UGH. Def calling them The Cocksmokers forever now.

I missed Kid Koala, but he came back with Deltron.
Gramatik can, but I'm not sure if he does live at this point. It's possible that one of the rappers could have a scratch DJ. Not sure on the EDM DJs. I don't think Mustard scratches or What So Not. I have no idea re Chainsmokers. They have those fake turntables now and scratch pads, so it's hard to tell sometimes unless you can get on stage. DJ Lord (Public Enemy) is one of the best I've seen.
Btw, I didn't see the news on it til about an hour too late, but they busted out the sky writers yesterday. It was good to see them back at Jazzfest this year too. Wrote Tool and the other headliners around 6:30.
Btw, for any of y'all coming to town, there is a fairly new B&B type place on my block called NOLA Grand Canal Hotel and Spa. No idea the price or availability, but figured I would let y'all know. Pretty great location (but I'm biased) for short drive or walking distance to City Park and very quick Uber anywhere else in the city. If you stay there, I'll have a beer with you.

Damn. You live two blocks from me. Been digging Revel. Of course I'm just a poor renter paying exorbitant Mid-City prices!
