Completely missed January's press release saying that Steve Rehage was out as President of Live Nation but still holds an equity interest in Voodoo. What I don't want to see happen is Voodoo becoming a mirror image of all the other Live Nation festivals. I realize some of that is inevitable because promoters will utilize available talent, but I still want alternative and NOLA.
That pretty much already happened as soon as the made one of the main stages catered to dayglo dipshits. I think they'll always have nola acts just because it saves them a ton of money and it requires hardly any work for them to book. What they SHOULD do, is instead of having Bear Creek at MGW is to combine the two. Let Voodoo be a metal/rock/psych/funk/hiphop party at the park on Halloween and ditch the EDM stage. Have Buku twice a year at MGW with a different name in the fall. Buku & Kubu. Have one more 'shitty & over-rated' rap heavy and the other more 'wait 4 dem drops' untz heavy.
side note: New Radiohead album is awesome. Wish we were getting them too, but there's no way we get them and Tool. I feel like we'll get Kendrick Lamar and LCD for the other headliners. I'm fine with that as long as Radiohead plays some arena shows in the southeast.
Yeah, not sure if they will consolidate by choice though. Even still, if Bear Creek Bayou is promoted right and if Galactic can get some more decent acts for their fest the week before, there will be some great music in town during the early fall this year. That cushions (for me) this year's Hangout and the probability that I have to skip Bonnaroo in June which I had been leaning toward going. A weekend of funk and rock followed by a weekend of the funk with Voodoo still a few weeks out would be awesome. Might even be able to get jabco off the couch for a special guest star appearance or two.
Edit to add there still aren't any other rumors floating around town on Voodoo.
After Fiya Fest I dunno how I feel about Bear Creek at fucking MGW. Full airport style metal detectors, leos all over the place, annoying FESS Security (if you read this Fess, go ahead and check inside your own ASSHOLLLEEE)etc.
If you don't have free water available, you can suck all the dicks if you are not allowing sealed bottles in.
Really don't know if I can sully my memories of the real Bear Creek by going to this and having a totally non-Bear Creek experience. If the lineup is Fiya Fest x2 I might go, we'll see.
I'm way more interesting in Landing Festival at this point. Place was out of the way (Ubering there would be very expensive) and you were basically stuck with fuck-you $20 parking on site, but that place was cool and has potential. Anyplace with two stages and no overlapping sets is cool. Except if you don't like the one band that is playing hahaha
As for Voodoo, I didn't know that about Rehage. It was goofy that they had him as Pres of NA Fest Operations anyways. That guy put on quality fests in the earlier days, but there weren't many fests out there to compete with so once the scene got co-opted and overrun with cookie cutter generica fests, there wasn't much left he could really do to compete. Coupled with that, Voodoo fell off dramatically when it moved to the new festival grounds at City Park. The vibe just isn't there and the layout doesn't compare. Ah well, times change.
I'm gonna keep hope alive on this year's lineup though. I really want it to be good, I want to go. This will be my 12th time going.
Changes I would make: -MORE Nola bands- They have scaled back on them. That is unacceptable! -Live/full band EDM/ra acts as headliners for mahldawg stage. (LCD, Kendrick etc) I think for the fest to actually grow and be sustainable they really need to adopt Lolla's model of having 6 headliners. -Continue stepping the food game up. This is a great improvement they have made in the past few years in really modelling their food options after Yazzfest. -Craft beer tent/area. Options are good. Beer choices at Voodoo = me bringing a flask -More creative undercard. I mean, even midcard is unlikely to get too diverse in 2016, but Voodoo used to have sick undercards. Shudder To Think played Voodoo '08 for example.
Bands I would like to see at Voodoo 2016: Ween At The Drive-In of Montreal Tame Impala King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard Karl Denson playing Prince Savages Kamasi Washington Gov't Mule (hasn't played since '02) Anders Osborne Original Meters Acid Mothers Temple Slowdive Caribou
I guess my main issue is shit has just been so safe. Part of what I liked about festivals in the early 2000's was being exposed to new shit outside of my comfort zone. That is the one thing that truly appeals to me about Coachella is that they still manage to do that.
I wish I didn't care so much because it is an easy path to disappointment but I'm emotionally committed to this fest, dagnabit.

I know I'm always badmouthing Voodoo but I agree the vibe changed when they moved to the new location at City Park. Can't quite put my finger on why, it's just not the same. I was driving through the old grounds in City Park before Jazzfest and felt a little sad thinking about the old dueling main stages. Those were the best.
I'm always interested in what Voodoo will book but as it stands I'll be at Hulaween, unless Phish Fall Southern Run takes up all my money time and sanity.

I only went that last year of the dueling stages (which was definitely cool as shit), so for me the vibe side was never a thing. I just always have a blast, and it's probably my favorite festival (with all the unforeseen glitches and everything else) outside of Wakarusa. My oldest who ditched Jazz Fest for Tipper's Full Moon at Spirit of Suwanee (a bunch of his friends refused to do so because they aren't leaving town for Jazz Fest) feels the same way about Voodoo. A bunch of his friends are going to Hulaween, but unless we get some disaster headliner trio like Mumford/Avetts/Avicii, there's no way he's going to bail on Voodoo. I kind of find that amusing, but I guess Voodoo 2011 was his first major rock festival (had been to French Quarter Fest and other local productions). And maybe your first experience counts for some loyalty points if it's good (was Soundgarden so yeah it was excellent)

I definitely understand that, Bonnaroo was my first major festival, and even though I took a break from 2005-2011, when I returned in 2012 all that nostalgia came back. It's hard to think of a summer now where I don't go to the farm.
I am going to agree about the location issue. I hate the fest grounds for Voodoo. They feel smaller and the festival had to pull back. Plus, with all the newer festivals, they just don't pull the lineups that they used to pull. It is still a great, inexpensive festival that is close to home which I love, but I really don't like the new location.

Yea, walking down the vendor rows on that road with all the massive oak trees was so nice, as well as the lake next to the Bingo Show circus tent.
The footprint is def much smaller, at least it feels that way. The way things were before it was set up so sound bleed wasn't a terrible issue because the main stages were kind of separate from everything with that huge tree buffer.

Supposedly the new location is larger, but the problem is it has twice the amount of trees of the old location. They thought it would work to help create sound borders for the stages, but where the trees are located in the fest grounds, kinda ruined that idea. I really miss the old location and the dueling stages. Running from one side of the field to the other side to catch the next headliner. Plus, because the grounds were longer in the old location it felt so much more roomy.
I had just turned 21 for my first Voodoo in 2001. Still felt like a noob though because the only fest I had been to before that was a joke of one. CPR fest in Biloxi in '98 to see Violent Femmes.

Why do you have to make me feel old? My first festival was lollapalooza in 91, when I was 15.

Ah, first festivals:
Bonnaroo 2003 Bonnaroo 2004 Coventry 2004 <- worst musical weekend of my life
probably some small crunchy festivals during that time to. I know I went to something called Harvest Fest in Georgia, with moe and Keller and other hetty bands. A disastrous festival somewhere in Alabama called Odyssey Fest I think? STS9 played, maybe Keller. Fun weekend but the cops were brutal.
Went to Bayfest in the 90s but that doesn't count. I totally saw Creed tho. RIP Bayfest.

Yes, lots of small crunchy festivals. They had "Hurricane Festival" here one year in the early 2000s, I remember the Jimi Hendrix Experience bus being there. I would take Kyle to all these little festivals that would roll through and he would throw a fit. He really hates festivals. I think I broke him.

Wow, I'm so jealous. That is the all time festival lineup for my tastes. If I could go to one fest in a time machine it would be Lolla '91!!
I love the Butthole Surfers video from the Washington State show on youtube where Gibby is out of his mind and firing a rifle over the crowd at beer can skeet or whatever. If it was any other band I would assume he was shooting blanks for shock value, but the danger element with the Surfers was very real.

Yea my first 'festival' would have been Bayfest '96 I think.
Let's hear some stories about Odyssey Fest! I read about that shitshow on PT, sounds godawful. Everyone says the cops were out of control invasive, to the point of many rights being violated etc.

Oh yeah it was terrible, especially after having experienced the complete free for all that was Bonnaroo 2003. I actually volunteered at Odyssey Fest and spent my shift checking tickets, so I got to see cops absolutely pick apart cars in their searches, and saw multiple arrests during my shift.
There were patrol cars going through the campgrounds at all times. The clearest memory everyone remembers is at night this one cop car going through the campgrounds was on his PA announcing "wake up hippies!" and laughing, so pretty much no one could sleep.
That was also the first fest I saw the 12 Tribes bus at. Handing out grilled cheeses in an attempt to recruit new cult members.
The only musical memory I have is an extremely brief glimpse of me on a hill in full on maniac liquid fuel mode when STS9 played "Moonsockets". Apparently the cops didn't stop me from having a good time.
I don't recall anyone I personally knew getting popped, which is unusual because I was there with a lot of friends and one of us always got arrested when we did things. Pure luck I guess.
It was the festival that made me accept that a music festival in Alabama will never happen. Which is why the first Hangout was such a big deal to me. Couldn't believe a crunchy fest was happening on the beach I used to go to as a kid, with a somewhat acceptable level of LEO involvement. Of course that changed over the years.
Hit some 80s Jazz Fests and then 1992 and 1993 Lollapoloozas. Had 2 babies by 1993 so fun was mostly over. Got to Voodoo in 2010 for Ozzy/Street Sweepers and decided it was on.

I had the one baby in '98, but it didn't stop me. I even went to Jazzfest HUGELY pregnant that year. That Street Sweepers Social Club show was so amazing, sitting through Drake for it was not.

I had 3 by 1996, and a wife in college who went on to be a night nurse. So I was T.S.O of L. for a few years. Then we had to move down to the the swamp after Katrina for 3/4 years, and I don't much like swamp pop. Once I got back to town in 2009, I just decided I was going to try to see something every week or so since I really missed seeing live music <--- excluding lame cover bands that might be in bars down there. Since I got back, I have hopefully seen in excess of 400 shows. I do need more though.

That's impressive man. I have zero kids, try to see as much live music as I possibly can, and I don't think I'm anywhere near 400 shows in that time period.
The criticisms of LiveNation being more in control of this fest fail to appreciate the history of instability in this fest. I've gone to five or so Voodoos and every time there are major, big-time festival screwups. The layout changes from year to year in major ways, they failed to secure a soft drink sponsor for years (and thus had none for sale), they had mud pit porta potties at the bottom of hills, they put stages in front of huge bass EDM acts simultaneously, they had a year when everyone was waiting for hours and hours to even get in, and so on and so on. I love this festival, but some professionalism might help.
In Bloom Festival 3/18-3/19 Houston, Texas Rock Werchter Festival 7/5-7/8 - Werchter, Belgium Mad Cool Festival 7/12-7/14 - Madrid, Spain Austin City Limits 10/5-10/7 - Austin, Texas

Preach it! It used to be the only soda you could find at Voodoo was at the hidden SoCo stand. But they didn't change the layout until after the move to the new fest grounds, the old grounds had the same exactly layout for years. Other things that you mentioned started after Live Nation had their hands in the pots, even if it was a less controlling manner. Maybe that is why they are taking more control for this year.

They did shift a few things over the years at the old grounds IIRC. Can't remember the timing of the moves, but they had dueling main stages, then no dueling main stages. They put Le Plur by the river where I think the Bingo stage used to be, then they moved Le Plur to where the old secondary main stage used to be but angled a bit differently, and started having shows there at the same time as main stage shows.

I forgot that they got rid of the dueling stage the year or two before the move. But everything else before that was minor shifting of stuff. Nothing like now, how it changes every year.
