First festival if BayFest doesn't count would be DeLuna in 2011.
If DeLuna's 2011 lineup had come out in 2014 to now, it would be heralded as one of the lineups of the year. Way ahead of its time.
2012 was the monster year in my opinion. Although also the fests downfall from what I've heard. Apparently they never paid some of the bands and shortchanged others.

They didn't pay a lot of the bands after the 2011 fest either. They got away with having that monster lineup because they got Gus Brandt (Foo Fighters' tour manager and Pensacola native) to book the thing, and from what I understand Pearl Jam only agreed to play because they owed Gus a favor from years ago. As far as the 2012 not paying bands thing goes, I heard Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters got paid half and most everyone else got nothing. Guided By Voices went public about not getting paid.
DeLuna failed for numerous reasons, like not paying acts, but it also failed because:
1. They barely promoted the fest. It's like they just thought word of mouth would be enough to get people to come.
2. It was in the Florida panhandle, where unless it's mainstream country music, classic southern rock or panhandle derp TK101 Rock, nobody gives a crap.
3. They had a terrible VIP experience in 2012. False promises, didn't deliver on almost anything they were advertising. Lots of broken trust among VIP people.
I could go on and on. Last I heard anything about DeLuna was their remaining assets had been bought by a promotions group in NOLA who wanted to bring it back under a different name, but that's all quiet now. And we seriously needed DeLuna this year after Hangout dropped their disappointment of a lineup on us.
2012 Deluna was def the best. All three were a lot of fun but 2012 was just fantastic. The hidden nola stage was a major highlight, that was some of the best sound I've ever heard at a fest. Anders was on fire at that show.
Bayfest highlights- (anyone have any really old Bayfest schedules? I have a massive word file I keep track of every show I've been to and Bayfest lineups from way back are holes in my records. Might have to go to a library and hit up some microfiche or something)
Pain- 1998 Mighty Mighty Bosstones- 2000? Reverend Horton Heat- 2001 STP- 2002 Avenged Sevenfold- 2006 Alice In Chains> Velvet Revolver- 2007 Willie Nelson - 2012 R. Kelly, Filter- 2013 Jane's Addiction- 2014
Many great sets from Dennis Fingerroll Nelson over the years.
Aight, worst sets ever at Bayfest. Gotta say the worst ever was STP w/ Chester Bennington in 2014. That was just all kinds of sad. Motley Crue should really get the title, since Vince Neil's voice went out the night before, but it was just too funny and goofy to really be that bad. The $50 in fireworks that went off after they played was just icing on the cake, def some Spinal Tap shit.
Any suggestions for "can't miss" music venues to check out? Spending a full week in town so I'd like to make the most of it.
I'd suggest you wait and see what gets announced. There aren't any "you must go to" music venues except maybe Tipitina's for nostalgia. There are plenty of cool spots that will be having shows that weekend (Republic, House of Blues, Dragon's Den, Howlin' Wolf, etc.). There are probably 200+ music clubs in town or clubs that play music, so when it gets closer, you'll see what's worth going to.
For once I disagree with esteban . Maple Leaf is a must go to music venue other than Tipitina's. And every Tuesday night Rebirth Brass Band plays.
Yeah, Maple Leaf is nostalgic and probably worth going to a show at. It's not the greatest place in the world, as it's basically a bar with a wall between it and the music room and then there's a patio room out back behind that. It's probably as iconic as Tipitina's though not as well known outside the city. I also agree about the Saenger being a great venue, and I'm hoping The Orpheum (which I'll be at tomorrow) will prove to be one of the best as well.
My point was more like there isn't a Moody's or Tabernacle type bars/music halls that holds several thousand and is known for big shows. But there are dozens of cool and hip places to see live stuff (including some theaters) since that's what the city is about anyway.

I will be at he Orpheum tomorrow as well. It will be my second time there, first concert.

Thanks, yea I was already poking around the calendars for some of the local venues and there hasn't been much announced yet. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out. Sounds like we'll have to make it to Tipitina's and Maple Leaf at the very least.
Usually that weekend, House of Blues will host kickoff party on Thursday. The Joy will have Jam/ Jamtronica. Republic and Dragon's Den will have electronica. Went and saw Funk Sabbath ( which fn ruled \m/ ) last year on Friday at Howlin Wolf. Usually I never go out after Voodoo. But we did preparty Wednesday with Phi at HiHo for Bob Moses. Went to Tauk at Howlin Wolf Thursday then Cookie Monsta at Republic. It's not like Jazz Fest after dark, but there will be a ton of good shit later on.
Mastodon played Civic Theatre on saturday after the fest last year. We went to that shit soaking wet after the monsoon during Jane's Addiction / Ozzy & friends.
This is looking to be our go to Fall fest w Riot out, no clue what isnhappening at FFF, LIB seems to be having issues. Really hoping for that Arcade Fire + LCD here.
Looks like Launchpad chumped it with Riot. Hopefully our non-Tool selections are accurate for Voodoo.
Small chance I may go to Denver Riot. Got a room just in case. I love Denver and being able to smoke down legally is pretty sweet.
My girl wants to see Death Cab and Motion City Soundtrack. I would obviously be at something like Leftover Crack instead.
I'm the opposite. I want Tool badly. But if not, give me something big like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest or Rage. If I have to settle for a rock act I don't necessarily want to see, at least I hope it's good SOAD or big like Linkin Park. A few riot fest acts would rule as well.
RATM ain't happening. It's RATM minus Zach with Chuck D and B Real. They're called Prophets of Rage. Shit could be really cool or it could be super awkward. Supposedly going to sets of Rage/PE/Cypress.
I would be downfor this as a pre-headliner.
I guess they are possible since Voodoo is a few days before the election and they could try to get a bunch of jaded Bernouts #WOKE to go vote for their girl Hilldawg?
I don't get what this would be supporting except being generally Anti-Trump. Sounds like it will be a bunch of people bitching about shit without offering solutions.
As for Cheesedick's question, well, that would have to be a one day concert to be feasible, which means LCD and Arcade Fire would be the undercard.
