Like, I'll go out on a limb and suggest that J. Cole will draw a bigger crowd than LCD Soundsystem, unless LCD is completely unopposed and J. Cole is against several other decent acts.
Honestly, I think Cole and Macklemore will draw just as much, if not more, than Kendrick and Gambino last year, they're just not nearly as talented.
Think of how many people had to say no for Bonnaroo to get the hiphop billing we have at the moment.
The hip hop is lame, but I don't think it's because they were getting turned down. J. Cole is one of the biggest selling rappers in the U.S. right now, he sells out his own amphitheatres. Macklemore is a huge draw in and of himself. You might not like them, but they're each massive names - not simply some fall back because Jay-Z said "no" or whatever you think happened. The rest of the rap undercard is actually pretty typical for Bonnaroo; a couple mid-major names like Tyler, the Creator and Vince Staples, then some lower-tier/new acts like Goldlink, Post Malone, whatever.
This. I understand the J Cole/Macklemore complaints but what exactly was the alternative? It's not like Jay Z and Eminem are playing everywhere and Bonnaroo missed out. This is close to the best you can get for rap tours this year. Wouldn't have minded Run the Jewels coming back, though...

I don't think that's going out on a limb. If they went head to head (and obviously they aren't) there is a 100% chance more people would be at J. Cole.
Fair enough, she's way bigger than I realized. But the other bands I mentioned are definitely Thursday-caliber on my opinion, but it feels like they almost HAVE to play Friday-Sunday.
This is exactly what everyone has been saying, though. It's not that all of these acts are terrible (though plenty are), it's that they're all really small caliber. Basically, the entire lineup is full of acts that would play Thursday and/or early in the day on the weekend.
That's my biggest issue with the lineup thus far. The upper portion of the undercard (5-30 range) looks incredibly weak compared to previous years. For me, this is the portion of the undercard that can really make or break a festival. And when I think about the acts I'm most upset about Roo missing out on, it's mostly acts that would've been billed in these spots. Acts like Modest Mouse, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, Hall & Oates, Ratatat, Hot Chip, and Portugal. The Man. And for the love of God, what will it take for Bonnaroo to bring back Beck? The fact that he hasn't played since 2006 is just inexcusable.

Looking back at almost any line-up between 2006-2014 and comparing them to the last two is really depressing. Don't do it.
One exception might be 2011, that was the 10th Anniversary and still a comparatively weak line-up especially knowing what a shit show Eminem was in hind sight and how much they fucked up conflicts that year.
For example: This line-up has not only Pearl Jam and Death Cab like this year, but also Widespread Panic and Jack Johnson in the top 4. But Bonnaroo seemed to have aspirations still. It's like they reached the height of what they wanted to do a few years back and now don't give a shit.

Yeah I agree. Although I would love to have seen a legacy Hip Hop act like snoop, Ice Cube, or ATCQ, they got some pretty big names in he current hip hop department. J Cole is incredibly hot right now(I personally think he's great) and is rumored to drop a collab album with Kendrick. Macklemore is the worst thing to happen to hip hop, but he's popular with a new album on the way. Staples & Tyler are both from the same OF vein, and Post Malone is really gaining a big following with people my age with his song White Iverson. I was really expecting someone from the A$AP mob(ferg, new album on the way)

Wait, you're saying you think having Widespread Motherfucking Panic and Jack Johnson in the top 4 is better than Dead & Co. and LCD Soundsystem?
I agree, this years lineup leaves a lot to be desired. But the headliners are the strongest point of this years lineup to me. It's the undercard that falls flat on its face.

No, I'm saying that the 2008 line-up as a whole kicks the ass of 2016 because of unique bookings like MSTRKRFT, Bluegrass Allstars, Sigur Ros, Chali 2na, etc. The top 3 names of 2016 are its only saving grace.

Looking back at the 2013 and 2014 lineups in particular make me want to cry. If this pattern continues, Roo will never put out a lineup anywhere near as good, and that will only worsen the regret I feel about not going those years.

Ok, definitely agree with that. I just read it as you saying, "Not only did we have PJ in '08, we also had WSP and Jack Johnson!".
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
Comparing the lineup in 2016 to the lineup in 2008 is like comparing the championship wins of NFL teams before the AFL-NFL merger.
Things are going to be easier with less competitive participants.
This is the new normal. Or the new americana - as one of this year's top billed acts would say.
I don't agree with that, though. I think having other fests competing certainly makes it more difficult, but Bonnaroo is/was one of the "big 4" fests, and with LiveNation backing it, should have enough money and muscle, not to mention outright ingenuity, to put together an interesting lineup.
Exactly. It's not as easy to put together a killer lineup these days due to competition, but it's not impossible.
If they can't stand up to the competition, they're going to slowly shrivel into a husk of their former selves.
For example: This line-up has not only Pearl Jam and Death Cab like this year, but also Widespread Panic and Jack Johnson in the top 4.
Yea but this is where the "music taste is subjective" argument comes in. I don't think Widespread and Jack Johnson would make this lineup better. I much prefer having LCD and Dead & Company over those names. I've seen enough Widespread at Roo.
Are their any speculations on whose hosting the superjam this year?
Maybe Grace Potter? I saw her and the Nocturnals cover the Big Lebowski soundtrack one New Years Eve. I know that they did the Top Gun one a different year. I feel like that theme might be in her wheelhouse, plus she has a history of jamming with other artists, especially at Bonnaroo.

If that really does end up being the superjam I guess that makes my late night options easier. But that's assuming Roo doesn't fuck the other options up, too.
