I have held back on this thread to do a little listening of the leaked bands. So far I am in the about 15-17 bands I would like to see range. That being said I have been going to Roo since 2013, so I am newish to Roo but its meh. I am in my late 30's so I pride myself on being in tune with music today to a certain extent. My gripe is I havent heard of over 40-55%% of the bands on the leak. Normally I know a good 60% of the names. Its just so weird to look at the leak and be like who the fuck are these people. I am hoping we get the 3 headliners plus about 6-8 more that will make this 15th Anniversary Roo be worthwhile. I mean their is no good quality EDM on this lineup to at least play LN Which. We have gone from Skrillex, to Kaskade, Bassnectar, to Flosstradamus????? We have no Legend act outside of The Dead & Co (LCD is a reunion so its not Legacy in my eyes). We have PJ which is the anchor for me but no good rock/alternative artist. I mean I know I will catch hell for this but Firefly has around 25-27 bands I want to see on it. Roo you can do SO MUCH better!!
Not many artists on the lineup that received critically acclaimed status the past year from all the indie outlets either. Roo is usually good at booking those. I dug through the entire lineup using spotify. Of course I found a few gems, like always, but most of it comes off as second-rate across all genres. Lots of FLO-Machine knockoffs, boring same-y folk, lackluster hiphop (pretty bad here), mediocre yogurt rock and indie rock, typical jam psytronic that's always in festival circulation, and then criminally awful EDM. I think this is where it hurts the most for me, personally. Although roo does tend to book the cheese electronic, however, they always have a few decent quality electronic (Caribou, Darkside, Jamie XX, James Blake, RJD2 to name a few). As it stands, I'd take Skrillex again over what we have now. Is this ROO's attempt at booking what they deem as up-and-comers, or is this just them being cheap because of all the money going towards site improvements? I'll take back the sulfur water, porta johns, and give back the screens as a trade-off for Roo continuing to deliver on lineups. I don't know what gives, but looking at all the prior lineups dating back to 2007, this appears to be their worst. A part of me wants us all to look real stupid come Tuesday night, but I'm feeling close to confident this is what we're going to get this year.

Strong feeling Conan will announce only 20 or so bands, maybe flash the poster, and then intro purity ring as an act. It will probably be pre taped and edited so the audience won't leak it. So really, cable tv or not, just go online at the necessary eastern time, and the poster will be up.
Everyone is complaining about the EDM this year. I personally don't consider Trap dance music, and Trap is mostly what we got. But it has been taking over the US dance scene for a while. It seemed like roo was the last one to let the Trap take it over too. I just hope that Kalliope gives some good four on the floor beats to dance too. Or maybe if we are lucky Shpongle will still pop up on the lineup as they (he if DJ set) were "confirmed" by the same person who confirmed GRiZ.
I am honestly looking forward to GRiZ, Zed's Dead, Adventure Club and RL Grime. GRiZ is just a not as good version of Big Gigantic. Zed's Dead and AC just seem like they will be fun and ZD produces music in a lot of EDM genres. So I don't know where their sets are like. And RL Grime actually makes some good Trap. Though I think that due to the Trap at night that the 20hz rumble is gonna be drowning out ALL the tents. That is what happened during Bassnectar last year.

There's just too much trap. Leave it at Floss and/or RL Grime and that's it. The EDM this year is just way to generic and uninspired for Bonnaroo
I think we are still getting Shpongle. And if by some miracle they decided to actually spend the money and book the full band then that could be our Which stage act.

keys n krates is a live show and is supposed to be really good. would rather leave the pure festival trap of flosstradamus at home.
it's crazy because with how big the genre is right now there are SO many artists to choose from, most of them being more interesting/inspired than floss. baauer, mr carmack, g jones, djemba djemba, what so not. most of those have released new music recently or have it on the way too.

I feel like Flosstradamus is just trying to play everywhere they haven't yet. I really felt like it was coming this year. I mean they even did Gathering of the Juggalos...

I consider Trap bass music. I like listening to it at home or in my car, but at a show I want something with a beat. No one dances at a trap show, they bob, or maybe pop the booty. Hard Dance shows are the best. The energy is fantastic. We didn't leave the Q-Dance tent at Mysteryland.
lolwut. what do you consider trap to be then? i think it lends itself to dancing really well.

haha that's a good point. i just looked it up and i guess they did release 3 eps last year, but i'm pretty sure they were very early on.
no lie tho, i've been very tempted to go to the gathering. it used to be only an hour from where i live, and their rap/hip hop lineup is honestly usually pretty dope.

Yeah, because Bonnaroo is good at securing their lineup.
1. Literally all I know about Flosstradumus is what I saw from their Coachella set. I remember watching the stream of it and thinking it was bad - real bad.
2. I'm really not into trap at all, but I saw RL Grime this past summer and had a blast. I might end up at his set at Roo depending on what else is going on at the time.
3. I'm not sure I'd call what people do to trap music to be "dancing". I mean, by most generic definitions it probably is, but it requires significantly less rhythm to move to than most dance music. It's of a continual semi-rhythmic inward convulsion.
4. Shpongle would be great. I've grown out of them for the most part but they're a band I've always wanted to see.
5. Just starting to dig around into the acts I don't know, and I'm digging VULFPECK as well. Thanks for the rec, Inforoo.

but... trap music is built around strong beats. and i don't know what shows you've been to, but the ones i've experienced people go fuckin' ham. maybe there's a stronger scene where i live, who knows.
i do really want to go to a hardstyle show sometime. a buddy and i want to backpack europe and hit up a q-dance event. defqon tho.
Cleveland rave scene sucks. All trap and no one dancing (except the few shufflers in the back who seem to be making their own beat.) Only good raves around me are Pittsburgh and that is about 3hrs. But they have a GOOD hard dance scene. Saw Kutski there last year and it was a blast. First rave I have been to that absolutely everyone was dancing. But that is how the Q-Dance tent was too. I think it is just that kind of music makes you want to move. I keep asking roo in the survey to get at least 1 hard dance act for like 1am. The night is still young then and people can go fast. Then they can wind the night down with the bass music and deep house on Kalliope.
4. Shpongle would be great. I've grown out of them for the most part but they're a band I've always wanted to see.
EDM, trap and electronic whatever music in general are definitely not my thing, but I've always loved Shpongle for some reason - it just seems more organic and psychedelic rather than womp-wompy. Before there was Shpongle, one of Simon Posford's other alter egos was Hallucinogen, which was some sort of trance or something, and also quite good. I have no idea what he is into these days though I sure wouldn't mind seeing a Shpongle set again. But of course if he ends up on Which it is a sure sign of a weak lineup, since there is no way most people have any idea what a Shpongle is. DON'T PANIC YET!!!!! Maybe the official lineup will have enough surprises to blow us all away. Maybe.

tru. late night hard dance at the farm would be totally bonkers. i really want them to book a good psytrance artist for late night at some point in the future. i would lose my mind in more ways than one.
stl has a really strong bass music scene, but hard dance is pretty much totally absent.

The only reason I said Which was for the band. If he were to play with his full band it wouldn't fit in a tent. But his full band is way to expensive. So I think that if we got Shpongle it would be just a Simon DJ set with his latest Shpongletron. I would just hope for a closing set. As he played til sunrise last time and I would want that again.

If he doesn't show, there's always the Tipper & Friends Full Moon Gathering at Suwannee for your Shpongle sunrise set fix.

That certainly sounds more probable, and appropriate. I don't do sunrise baloney because I don't want to be garbage the next day (and I don't do anything to, uh, put myself in the all night dance "mindset), but if it isn't a crazy late slot I'll check Simon out, barring a major conflict. And so far I'm not expecting many lineup dilemmas since there are so few leaked acts I'm dying to see, unfortunately. Surely it'll be fun anyway, I'll just drink more, or something.

So after checking out the festival scene overseas, I have come to the realization that June 9-June 12th is a festival packed weekend. I don't know if Manchester only allows Roo this weekend, but they need to move it to a different weekend or we will continue to get lineups like 2015, and most likely 2016. Just look at all the fests during this weekend, I think it would hint at why AC/Superfly struggled to book a thicker lineup. Just my .02.

None of this is new, though. It doesn't account for the sudden decrease the last two years. Pinkpop and Isle of Wight are decades old. Primavera started the year before Roo. Mid-ranged ones like Greenfeild and Download have been around for more than a decade. Roo has always been competing with them. It's obviously not just about that weekend either. The threat is bands playing the Euro circuit and being unavailable for May and June
The weather won't allow for Roo to move back into the Summer and they'd lose a major chunk of their audience if they moved it up into May.

Side note: Looked at most festivals, and not a lot of them have a majority of these acts. That's not necessarily a good thing though lol.

To add to this, Roo actually has one less big Euro competitor this year. Northside Festival (Denmark) is usually the same weekend as Roo, but this year it's a week later.

1. Literally same here.
2. Not into trap like that either but that RL Grime set at Trillectro was awesome, glad we got to chill for them and Chance. Barring conflicts I'll be at his set at Roo.
3. Trap dancing is the edm equivalent to hard rock headbanging.
4. I've dabbled with sphongle and really dig the psytrance, psy anything genres so a late night set from him I would have to check out barring anything crazy.
5. Vulfpeck is awesome. You gotta check out Cashmere Cat if you haven't already, yah missed him at Trill and he threw down a good set. I've been digging Chicano Batman, Hundred Waters, Natalie Prass, Allen Stone, Bully, Judah and the Lion, and Saint Motel. All new artists for me.
I would love to see Grizzly bear,Django django, tipper, panda bear, pretty lights, excision, future rock (performing daft rock) the werks, everyone orchestra superjam and tauk added.
