Far better than last year's famous person karaoke, I really like the idea of these musicians with this theme, I think it means we'll get a lot of funk/soul reworks of some TN classics, and the horns section will be insane. This just became a top 5 show for me.
Plus it helps with the Blood Orange and Lizzo conflicts I'm fighting with
If there are going to be big names I kind of like the idea of having them be the surprise guests. I'd rather the best musicians be in charge while the big names show up for a song or two. And there aren't a ton of famous people on the lineup who I'd like to see in charge over Kamasi. Mayer might be the only one, but I'll get my fill of him on Sunday, so I'd rather a guest spot from him too.
Also nobody's mentioned Leon Bridges yet, but he seems like he'd fit in nicely.
the consensus on reddit seems to be: where are all the famous people? the superjam is supposed to have awesome guests that aren't even on the lineup!
I wonder what they would have thought if they saw the lineup for the 2005 or 2006 superjam.
I'm glad there are no huge name announcements. big grams and rl grime will pull a lot of the riff raff away from this set (no offense to any inforoo riff raff attending these sets, I've certainly been riff raff before). Plus it's at This tent rather than Other, so better sightlines.
I know the tent will be full because its a superjam but due to the above factors I'm predicting it won't be Skrillex superjam level crowded. and lookie loo's who show up just because it's a superjam will start to leave during the set ta boot.
Yea I'm not understanding all the hate. Maybe it's the lack of famous musicians? Honestly, There could have been bigger names, but a lot of the time those bigger names don't mean better players and these players are phenomenal!
To each their own, but fuck some haters Krasno (Soulive and often Lettuce's guitarist), Shady Horns (Eric "Benny" Bloom of Lettuce and Sonic Bloom on Trumpet and Ryan Zoidis of Lettuce on Sax <--- both are fucking spectacular), plus GRiZ on Sax, plus Kamasi on Sax and other instruments, there's no room for hate. It's a Tennessee theme with real musicians.
I've seen Shady Horns and/or Lettuce probably 6 times already this year. And I'd see 'em another 6 more times. GRiZ, Shady Horns, Krasno and Mystikal did the Buku Superjam this year on Friday, and it was a fucking balls out party for anyone who likes the funk.
Most everyone else has been covered, except Lizzo who is a +/- hip hop singer and is actually fairly anticipated by the musical listeners going to Hangout.
Plus the superstars that we don't know yet. This will be a great late night show and should blow last year's to smithereens.
"Each year at Bonnaroo, a variety of artists come together for a collaborative performance called SuperJam"
I don't know if I've ever heard it referred to as just "SuperJam" but boy does it sound lame. It's like Space Jam for super heroes
It started off as being called just Superjam doe? And Space Jam for super heroes would be dope, you're fucking tasteless and classless
LMAO. I knew you'd like this one and umphlovecincy and Postjack. Some people know. The Funk, bitches (even if adapted to Tennessee with Rocky Top thrown in)!

Yeah the thought of it keeps growing on me more and more, I just gotta learn some classic TN jams. Kamasi at the helm is definitely best case scenario, dude only knows how to be exceptional as a performer.

Adapted? Stax is home to some of the earliest funk records

Stax is awesome, but obviously that's only a small part of Tennessee which has a very rich musical tradition as you know. There is a ton of country (Nashville), bluegrass (Appalachia), Elvis, Memphis rap (Three 6, Yo Gotti, etc.), new rock & indie (Kings of Leon, Moon Taxi, Turbo Fruits, Pujol, Black Cadillacs, etc.). They'll figure it out I'm sure.
A quick thought about what could be on this setlist... Theme From Shaft Try A Little Tenderness Green Onions Soul Man Hold On, I'm Coming I'll Take You There Mr. Big Stuff Suspicious Minds
Also, Ben Harper is my guess for surprise guest. He doesn't have any tour dates during Bonnaroo and is signed by Concord (the present incarnation of Stax) along with Krasno/Soulive and Nathaniel Rateliff
