Quite possibly the worst ever version of ring of fire. It might be the worst version of any song I've ever heard if not for good musical accompaniment. I'm still salty about this. Glad some enjoyed it but, woof, we did not.
Some of the songs were snoozers but overall I felt it was good. I thought the BB King cover was great and one of the highlights of my weekend. Some decent surprise guests would have been nice, but I still am satisfied with how I spent my night.
first couple of songs were mildly interesting, then Allen Stone came out for an excruciatingly lengthy rendition of "The Thrill Is Gone". That performance will go down as my second worst Bonnaroo memory ever, beaten only by the time in 2004 when my car got stuck in the mud in the pouring down rain while trying to leave Sunday night.
then when the guy from Third Eye Blind came out and did Ring of Fire. OK I shit you not, when i was in college we took a roadtrip to see our friend in Savannah. Day drank Jim Beam for several hours then we went to this karaoke bar and I did double jagermeister shots all night long. I was like some kind of miracle alcoholic android that night, the bartenders would all gather around every time I would order a budweiser and a double jagermeister shot and watch me take the shot down. later that night me and my comrades walked some crying stranger girl we found in the street back to her hotel, and then the hotel people didn't take to kindly to us so we stole this big pewter bowl of candy they had and ran away, then we threw the pewter bowl at some building and set off an alarm so we ran away from there too, ended up getting a room at the Thunderbird Inn because I was "tired of sleeping on the floor at fucking so-and-so's house this is bullshit i'm sleeping in a fucking bed", but when we checked into the inn at like 5am we just started screaming and throwing mattresses around before passing out, and I know we passed out but I also know there was a pounding at the door and we got kicked out. i don't remember exactly the order of events at the Thunderbird Inn.
backing up at that karaoke bar after the double jager shots I did "Ring of Fire" and straight killed that shit. Dude from Third Eye Blind was awful.
i left after that. maybe after i left justin timberlake came out and did "Dick In A Box" and I would hate to have missed that, but the first hour of the Superjam did not convince me to stick around.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
Also. I just want to confirm that Third Eye Blind appearing in his "Papa/Paja" hat to sing a devastatingly bad rendition of Ring of Fire was definitely the lowlight of last night. I'm not honestly sure the superjam ever recovered from that moment

All in all pretty good. Classic superjam in that there were moments of brilliance and absolute train wrecks like Ring of Fire. That one might have been the worst thing I've ever seen at Roo. I really enjoyed the Bessie Smith song!

Of the few critic reviews I've seen it appears the brass section (Kamasi, Shady Horns, GRiZ) were said to have been very good. Glad to hear that.

Personally very disappointed in the superjam. Left during Party in the USA for the David Bowie dance party. Which was ultimately disappointing also. No Fame, China Girl, nothing from Station to Station and, yeah, they didn't play Let's Fucking Dance at the fucking David Bowie Dance Party.
That is....disappointingly short. Fifteen songs? Really? I mean, I guess it's tough to compare to the Skrillex Superjam considering the songs were probably a longer length, but they covered forty songs in 2014.

They just jammed on the songs, which made for less songs total, but a lot of great moments from the horns, which I loved.
Honestly, I had a blast at the superjam. The Ring of Fire shit was a disaster, but there was so much great instrumentation overall. It wasn't a huge sing-a-long like other superjams in the past may have been (minus the JT cover, Jolene, and Party in the USA), but there were so many insane solos and moment where you could tell the performers were impressing one another with their playing/improv. That made it great for me.
Also the 15-min jam on "The Rhythm Changes" was a great close to the night.

I agree that the musician's talents were stellar. But as concertgoer, I want the musicians to impress the majority of the crowd, not themselves. That crowd was not into it and it was definitely the smallest attendance at a SuperJam in the last 4 years. I'm glad you and others enjoyed it, though. Pissed at myself for leaving PJ....

I hate third eye blind but don't have any strong feelings about their Ring of Fire, but I thought Allen Stone was pretty bad. I think thr Bessie Smith cover was my favorite.
Yeah, if this festival is going to let Third Eye Blind in on a Superjam, I think I've lost my last bit of faith in whoever put things together this year.

Superjam 2016: All About The Brass
But yes, the horn section at any given point was unreal.

I've gotta say I wasn't exactly looking forward to the superjam this year but I ended up leaving very impressed. Yes, Third Eye Blind's Ring of Fire cover wasn't great, but it certainly didn't kill the set. Lizzo covering Tina Turner with that little bit of Missy Elliot thrown in was lights out. And I danced my ass off during Sexyback. So all in all, a great time.
Everyone complained about Skrillex two years ago and said that he didn't belong as a musician. But guess what, he curated a hell of a good time that his a lot of bases.
This one had the musicianship, but lacked the execution.

It's weird that the last fun and interesting superjam was curated by Skrillex.
Third Eye Blind killed the Superjam. Easily the worst thing I've ever witnessed at Bonnaroo.
Absolute train wreck.
More like Third Eye Tone Deaf, amirite?
It was a bad song choice for him. Ring of Fire is too low for his voice. But messing up the chorus (it's not "like a ring of fire") didn't help either.
You guys are all crazy. The SuperJam was a lot of fun. Yes, Third Eye Blind singing Ring of Fire was terrible but nearly all the other songs were extremely interesting with Allen Stones's version of B.B. King's "The Thrill is Gone" being quite magical.
But I guess if you were actually expecting Pharrell and Justin Timberlake to make appearances then it would be a let down...
