Not that familiar with him, would he go over well with the current demographic? I recall reading the rumor about Tool being considered this year but passed on because of this. Same reason why I wouldn't consider Depeche Mode (who will tour next year) in the running.
Bassnectar would probably be a Honda Stage act but he'd draw as many people as most headliners that are mentioned. It may not be the crowd a lot of people want, but he sells a lot of tickets no matter where he goes (and it's obnoxious lol).
Must See 2018 List: 1. Drake 2. The Cure 3. David Byrne 4. King Krule 5. Moses Sumney 6. Dua Lipa 7. Mount Kimbie 8. Perfume Genius 9. Yaeji 10. Big Thief
Jay Z - Radiohead - Gorillaz Frank Ocean - Sigur Ros - Bassnectar - Nas
As sad it is for me to write this, I think Bassnectar is probably way more popular in North America than the Gorillaz (do kids even know them?) I'm still very doubtful Radiohead would be making another North American trip given that 4/5 band members are approaching 50 and probably have families to attend to. Plus, they're so big on being green.
Going through my iTunes (YES, I still use that as opposed to streaming) these also pop out that people haven't mentioned.
The Shins Foster The People The Kills Lykke Li Kaiser Chiefs Garbage Broods Keane Snow Patrol Hippo Campus Frightened Rabbit Bishop Briggs Sky Ferreira (wasn't she supposed to originally play this year?) Yeasayer Suede (long shot, I'm assuming they're sole NA festival appearance or date would be Coachella) Wolfmother Matisyahu Portugal The Man
She was a clue that fit in the crossword puzzle, so that's where people thought she was supposed to perform. That was never confirmed to my knowledge and the crossword of course went by the wayside quickly. Of course, her backing out could have been a reason why.

I think he'd be a "safe" booking for the third headliner spot, but I honestly have no idea who to put there. I figured Lorde could be 4th (like Lana in 2015), but she very well might be big enough to headline by next year.

Depeche Mode touring next year is the best news in this thread so far
Could Bassnectar really headline the main stage? He's certainly a large dance music name, but in a niche similar to Eric Prydz and Above & Beyond in that they have little crossover appeal.
And I wouldn't expect Springsteen or Pearl Jam in that they both demand long set times at festivals (minimum of 2.5 hours), which wouldn't happen at GovBall. 2 hours for Radiohead is probably the maximum they'll do.
Bassnectar has more crossover appeal than just about anyone.

If they pass on Tool who have WAY more relevance for this generation (still), there is no way Tom Petty would make sense.

I disagree. While Tom Petty's best days might be well behind him, his music is much more universally recognizable than Tool's. He has 26 singles that have charted on the Billboard 100, and his music has been a staple of classic rock radio for decades. Besides, Tom Petty has released 4 albums (two with The Heartbreakers, two with Mudcrutch) since Tool released their last album. Not sure how you can use relevance as an argument when Tool hasn't released an album in 10 years.
I'd be pretty happy if they booked Tom Petty, but just based off GovBall's history and the general demo for the festival, I really don't think he'd move the kind of tickets that would warrant spending the money to get him, and I couldn't see him being booked at a festival at anything less than top 3.
If they were going to go for more of a legacy headliner, I'd say Elton John, Macca or Billy Joel would probably resonate better. Wouldn't be surprised if they try to get Pearl Jam either because it seems the organizers want them badly.

I'm surprised these big, old legacy names are being thrown around. Excluding 2013 and GnR it seems like they mostly book one or two token legacy acts, but even then nothing as old as Petty.

Yeah, I agree that Tom Petty would be an unusual booking considering past lineups. I imagine that Pearl Jam is high on their list of desired headliners, but I'm not sure if they'll be available next year. If they're touring again, I would expect them to focus on Europe since they're hitting North America pretty hard this year.

Not official yet, of course, but DM is in the studio right now and a tour next year would fit in their cycle of an album/tour every 4 years (2001, 2005-2006, 2009, 2013).
@trist△n: what makes you think Bassnectar has more crossover appeal than just about anyone, other than the fact that it's dance music? Genuinely curious, in that other acts of similar caliber (e.g., Calvin Harris, Deadmau5) have more popular songs and/or stronger branding.
I'll never forgive those Gov Ball fuckers for putting him against Outkast.
Yeah that was a bummer. But they did have an Albarn afterparty. I went to that and then saw him again one week later at Roo where he brought out De La Soul and Del. Saw Outkast at Gov Ball and then again at Firefly two weeks later. No harm for me, but lame if you were somebody who only had the one opportunity.

Yeah I'm pissed I missed Albarn playing Clint Eastwood as well as Feel Good Inc with the De La Soul guest appearance. Outkast was cool but not all that great in hindsight.

Really? I thought they were fucking awesome. I saw Damon in Boston the Monday after and he was good, but they were next level. It was a sad, but worthwhile sacrifice.

Yeah I should also have done Albarn at Royale the Monday after. Nothing against Outkast's show, it just didn't stick with me very long. But that probably has more to do with my lack of enthusiasm for most of their back catalogue.
I'm seeing a lot of repeat headliners of Panorama. Do you guys think they would actually book Panorama's old headliners? With the feud that seems to be happening no matter how much they deny it I think booking their old headliners would just be saying "hey guys we thought Panorama was great." Not saying they won't ever book AF/Kendrick/LCD ever but it doesn't make sense to me to book them so quickly. If they want to stay afloat they need to be their own festival

Panorama is a pretty great lineup. Nobody is denying that. Gov Ball this year is pretty great too. The issue was them trying to put Gov Ball out of business. That's not an issue anymore. Gov Ball is sold out for this year; new fest coming in the fall. As long as they don't try to pull any nonsense again (I doubt they will since Gov Ball isn't an indie anymore), then its all good.
Would love if AF/LCD/Kendrick played Gov Ball. LCD members have played Gov Ball multiple times, Kendricks played before. No hate on any of their artists.

I could see them being booked for a GovBall headlining spot assuming they were touring based off a new record, but otherwise I'd agree with you 100%.
