This year, it's the same weekend as Newport. Not great for people who'd like to attend both, but if Get To The Gig, who have increasingly been booking national touring artists, want to bring in artists without local ties, I'm sure that the Newport rolling lineup, when it's been fully revealed, will contain a few artists who'd fit at NICE, as well, especially if they bring the Somerville Theater into the mix for an artist or two, even if it's not used throughout the four day festival.

Who said anything about competing with Newport, which is already sold out? From the fans perspective, I know that there are a couple of people here who may be inclined to do both, so it was worth mentioning.
As for being a local fest, it's loosely been that (Really, who's considers the Swirlies to be a Boston band these days?), but since Get To The Gig now seems to be booking as many nationally touring artists as local bands, it's possible that they may push that envelope a bit. And since Newport obviously hasn't been working with a radius clause that includes Boston in quite some time, judging from the two or three artists who usually play Boston within a couple of days of their Newport set for years now, it is possible that someone playing Newport could play NICE or any other local show the day before or after they play Newport, just like Isbell played Roadrunner the day before he played Newport last year.
If anyone's looking for a ticket to the sold out The Last Dinner Party show at Royale on Sunday, I just put my ticket up for resale on AXS.com for $50 (Factor in the original fees I paid and the resale fee, and I'm making around one dollar of profit).
It's general admission, so if you're going, it's an opportunity to be able to add one more person to your group.

1) With both MGM Music Hall and Leader Bank Pavilion having almost identical capacity, my assumption was that all things being equal (i.e., both venues available on a given date) that LiveNation would put shows at the pavilion. Yet, more shows (and better shows, imho) seem to be going to the indoor venue.
2) Forest Hills announced the bulk of its lineup today and there had been speculation (and I seem to recall comments from Bowery) that many artists would be playing a venue circuit of Forest Hills, Westvale Music Bowl, and Suffolk Downs. I'm not seeing a lot of shows on the Forest Hills schedule which could end up at Suffolk Downs, between the smaller capacity at the Boston venue, the fact that Boston Calling or LiveNation snapped up a sizeable handful of those artists, and Bowery putting some shows at Roadrunner which could have worked at Suffolk Downs.
IMHO, this is a very underwhelming lineup. The top three names are Vundabar, Palehound, and Model/Actriz. The lineup is filled with acts they've previously booked, acts that are playing the Orange Stage this year, the usual acts that play free shows in parking lots and parks.
Oh, they've added an outdoor stage on Saturday...in the Grove St. parking lot. I don't know whether it's officially free or if you need a pass to get in, but it's easy enough to just stand across the street and listen to the bands.
yeah, Vundabar is really good and Palehound is a name i know... but otherwise i barely know anyone on there.
one of my (more casual concertgoer) friends summed it up best: "$115 seems pretty steep, given the lineup I was thinking this was a free festival"
That's why I jump on this at the "hella early bird" level. $70 doesn't seem unreasonable to see 30 or 40 local artists at a couple of my favorite local venues. Plus, I live fairly nearby and the neighborhood is a favorite hang for me, anyway. If it was more of a trek for me, I'd think twice, but I'm in Davis Square at least twice per week.
at least the bands get paid a decent amount. i’m waiting until day by day because im only concerned with seeing model/actriz, bay faction and palehound really. also gotta take into account the faye webster/julie show at suffolk downs 7/27

First thought when I saw the announcement: "Cool, I've never seen her or paid a lot of attention to her music, but I've wanted to check it out and think I'll go to the show."
Second thought: "Damn, same night as Fantastic Cat at the Sinclair for which I already have a ticket."
You know you live in a big city when this sort of conflict happens often.

For anyone who loves classic 1960's and 70's soul, one of the few remaining greats is coming to the Wang in December. Smokey Robinson just announced a December 7 show, tickets on sale Friday.
I saw him twice in the early 80's and I'm so glad that I did. I just checked out a few minutes of a show he did this year on YouTube, and his voice is still surprisingly good at 84.

NICE, a fest dropped the name of other mystery performer. It's rock/pop/electronic singer-singer Ian Sweet. I had no idea she had any Boston ties. Her Wiki page connects her only to Los Angeles.
(Although her actual surname is Medford, so that might have something to do with it. )
To recap, Pile and Ian Sweet are the two performers not originally listed on the poster.

selling a PJ Harvey floor ticket for face value for her 9/18 mgm show. i know i said i would never go to Royale again but this is a very rare exception as Magdalena Bay is playing. dont plan on buying drinks at all tho or giving any money to the royale itself aside from the ticket sale
