Paid $20 extra to pass the line at the HOB to get front row for FKA twigs... and then after 90 mins of waiting, the fucking fire alarm went off and everybody got evacuated.
Luckily we could go back in and while my mood went way downhill after getting a lesser spot upon re-entry, twigs' show was amazing and made up for all the shenanigans.
agreed! she was amazing. not surprised that happened tho, ive had that fuck me over at a San holo and Vince staples show here before too
On another note, holy fuck Gesa sold bad. Seems like only 200 people here. edit: nevermind, floor was full when he was on. rest of the venue was empty though

Has anyone been to a show at Thompson's Point in Portland? Interested in a weekend trip up for Bon Iver at the end of July but don't know anything about the town/venue.

Never been to Thompson's Point, so can't comment on the venue.
Portland's a nice little city though. Tons of good restaurants, bars, breweries. It punches way above it's weight.

Been to TP, I saw The National there. Great venue...they have a large tent towards the rear of the venue, where they have drinks etc. Right on the water, so it has a nice vibe.

Definitely worth the trip, if only because Portland is awesome for a weekend. So many good restaurants and good drinks. The venue isn't in Old Port, which is the neighborhood you'd want to stay in, but it's close-ish and easy to get an Uber. It's right next to the Bissell Brothers brewery, which I think has the best beer in Portland (maybe in all of Maine.) The venue feels pretty DIY compared to the Boston spots I'm used to, but it's really nice. It is very outside and uncovered, so weather plays a major role. I went for The National this past June and it rained and was pretty muddy, which kinda sucked. I want to go back for something in nicer weather, for sure, and was also eyeing the Bon Iver show. It would be a perfect backdrop for someone like that.
For those NOT going to Newport, Osheaga or Lolla, Big Thief with (Sandy) Alex G will play 8/1 in Northampton, MA at Pines Theater, Look Park. Venue appears to be a small stage in the middle of a rural park- certainly off the beaten path- but intriguing.
So, there's a festival in Martha's Vineyard the week before Newport Folk that's seemingly designed for the same audience that attends Newport. Nice lineup, but does it really make sense for another "Americana Plus" festival to take place 37 miles from Newport and just one week apart?
Turns out that Nick Cave pulled a Sturgill Simpson. After making sure I got in during the presale, I just checked the seating chart for Agganis, and there are a *lot* of tickets left after 12 hours of onsale.
Almost every section has 100+ tickets left, and only the front floor section is sold out.
I should have just waited until I took a day off from work and saved money by buying at the box office, since the mark-up on a $45.50 ticket was a full $20 more.

The National in New Haven on July 30, Bon Iver in Portland on July 31, and Big Thief in Northampton on August 1. Also Bon Iver at Osheaga on August 2. What a weekend.

You're going to all of those??
I know I'm in for Big Thief, but everything else is up in the air. Ideally I'm at one of the Bon Iver shows, and I probably won't be at The National.

Gotcha. Well if you do end up going to see Bon Iver, I highly reccommend Osheaga since sunday is amazing this year. Might be a bit of a stretch with Big Thief the day before though
I know it doesn't involve live shows, but it's locally appropriate:
WAAF was never my favorite station, as I tend to prefer rap and I didn't align with it's conservative politics on the morning show. However, It's a sad day here in New England knowing that WAAF is now gone. I respect and mourn the institution that it was, that it was a pioneer and mainstay for New England's rock scene over the last 50 years. In my lifetime, there wasn't much like it out there. It's sad to see it become another victim of the corporate conglomeration of media around the country, just like WBCN, WFNX, and WBRU.
I have Sirius in my car so I hardly ever listen to local radio, and there's even less of a reason to do so today.
Also, Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath - great pick of a last song, considering it's now a Christian station.

The split in floor is such a joke at that venue. But Cave not selling well is unfortunate. Guess even the new album couldn't make him an arena act in the USA (which he already is in Europe).

His U.S. tour dates seem to be a mix of arenas and those new 4K-5K capacity mega-ballrooms, like that new 5K MGM Music Hall going up next to Fenway. (Bowery Boston/AEG is doing the Cave show and since MGM is going to be a Live Nation venue, Cave still wouldn't be playing there if it was open by September. AEG doesn't have a local venue they can do shows at which falls between the 3,500-ish seat Wang and the 7,000 seat Agganis.
There is one other option which I haven't see done in years that could work for AEG in Boston.
I went to college in northeastern Ohio back when the old Richfield Coliseum was the big arena in the Cleveland/Akron area. Every once in a while, there would be a show there where the stage would not be placed at the very back of the oval bowl. Instead, the stage would be placed somewhat closer to the opposite end of the arena, and curtains would be hung between the sides of the stage and the parallel side sections, basically roping off all of the sections behind the front of the stage and making the arena smaller for that show. It reduced the capacity for that show to somewhere between 1/2 to 2/3 of the usual seating capacity of the arena.
This way, a show anticipated to draw less than a full house sellout could be configured to feel like a sellout or close to it, without large swaths of empty seats killing the vibe.
I seem to recall that back when Worcester's DCU Center was the Worcester Centrum, they did some shows like this, as well. Those shows were billed as being at the Worcester Centrum Theater.
Both AEG's Simpson/Childers show at the Garden and Cave show at Agganis would have been well-served by doing the same thing. Maybe you don't need to cut the arena in half, but just moving the stage up by two sections would do a lot to make the same number of people seem like a full house or close to it.

you've never been to Bissell Bros? That's Thompsons Point.
The parking situation up there seems doable but it can be nightmarish at times
really beautiful area though. dunno about the venue itself, aside from the fact that you get a decent free experience if you happen to be there when there's a show on
