Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
My guess is there is a setting for max number of questions it will ask so that people will actually finish it. I got like 10 something questions about being a groop leader and not much else.
Oh and I said The Cure, Radiohead, Arcade Fire for headliners Built to Spill, Dinosaur Jr, and Lotus for the undercard.
Just give me a damn sunrise set by an actual artist on the lineup and not some bullshit Cherub Kalliope set, and I'm probably there.
Does Bonnaroo influence the Kalliope billing at all?
It's always seemed like an independent thing. They never even announce the artists til after most of the time.
But yes, quality of Kalliope artists is severely lacking.
abrakapokus and I had a discussion about that this year. The Kalliope has so much potential. It literally has the best sound system of any stage at Bonnaroo save perhaps the What. It sounds amazing, actually has a good light/lazer system, and pyrotechnics.
But then they throw these shit DJs up there who can't mix to save their lives. There'd be a good song strewn between the garbage, but so much was just lacking.
Of course I missed Lane 8 doing his Kalliope set this year in favor of a melting wax figure bumbling through Ring of Fire.
The Kalliope is a cheap way to say they have music playing till sunrise. Bonnaroo obviously doesn't want to pay to keep tents running that late anymore, which sucks.
There have been some decent DJs that have played Kalliope, but the fact that there's no schedule means there's no way to know when a DJ worth seeing is even there.

I gave my neighbors a fucking earful coming down after tame impala (Late Night!) about the Kalliope stage and how it is slowing killing Bonnaroo. Most of which was centered around. "Its a shame, because its a cool idea and has the potential to be awesome, but its just a stage for kids to eat molly all night and keep 90 percent of the campgrounds up at 4 am. "

took mine, it was long. i opted into the focus group as well.
i hovered in the middle area with most of my feelings, mostly neutral. headliner choices were beyonce / jay-z / phish. for undercard i put dixon / huey lewis and the news / chemical brothers (i'm not even that familiar with dixon aside from a live mix or two i've listened to, but i figured he generally encapsulates the kind of electronic music i'd like to see at roo). in the general "how can we fix 2017" question i put to book the weird acts no one else books, to book quality electronic artists, not just the big names like skrillex, book more deep house and techno, and when you book them don't shove them all in the silent disco, give them a tent OR put them on kalliope AND release the kalliope schedule beforehand.
for the schedule i of course put the early end times were a big negative.
basically if bonnaroo wants to set itself apart from other festivals, it needs to, well, set itself apart from other festivals.
it's just such a weird decision to slowly take away the things that made bonnaroo different.
i think inforoo done talked a lot of shit but roo just did the numbers. and the number was 45,000 tickets sold in 2016.

Ya, the lack of a schedule is disappointing.
I do wonder the cost of running the Kalliope vs a tent. That thing does have 70,000 watts of bass!1!! Add in the pyro, lasers, and lights and I bet they're not too far apart.
But it legitimately does sound fantastic. It's simultaneously loud without hurting your ears and wonderfully clear at the same time. Funktion One is no joke.
Maybe they could just wheel that thing over to the Which stage during the day and play the sets through it.
Edit:
I also wonder what kind of compensation the Kalliope people get. It's its own thing they bring in to play roo. After hearing how the Brooers Tent handle the vendors, wouldn't shock me to find out Kalliope doesn't get much. "Exposure" might be their main form of payment.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

Since I decided to post for the first real time in like a year, I'll throw this one out there too even though its not something I could really mention in the survey:
I think they should retire the Superjam for a couple years (not the Bluegrass one, if people like it, keep it going). The last couple of years have definitely been sub par compared to the heyday years of 2012-2013. It's becoming very uninspired and seems like they are just passing around a sign up sheet to see if artist can do them a favor and sing one song for them.
If they can put together a steller core of musicians that are willing to collaborate and put together a great 75-90 minute set while peppering in special guests then I say go for it in any given year. But they shouldn't just put one on just because they feel they have to have one.

Kalliope is from here in phoenix. I know one of the guys on there is a local DJ, Sean Watson. He has a residence at the bar/club downtown where a lot of bands play (eg:, I've seen tortoise, temples, jungle, odesza (before they blew up), dr. dog, etc there). Kalliope played the halloween block party in the bar area of Tempe after Monster Mash last year (not affiliated with the fest) and Phoenix Pride fest this year, neither of which had a cover. So it can't be outrageous.

God, Cherub is the worst. Will they ever go away? And more broadly, will that goofy assed Kalliope ever go away?
it does events all over town here, plus EDC, burning man, etc. They did this thing here on st. patty's day called "wake up call" and it was a dance party that started at 6:00 am in the production company's space in downtown phoenix. totally sober dance party with coffee and breakfast snacks, lasers and face painting, and kids got in free.
I talked to a lot of people at Bonnaroo who said they love the Kalliope stage. I don't think it's going away anytime soon. I would like to see some better DJs and maybe an actual schedule to know if there's anything worth seeing at that stage. They can still have the surprise sets and everything, because I think that element is what keeps it exciting for some people. I just want some better music and for it not to be an excuse for not having any real sunrise sets.

That sounds AWFUL.
Whaaaaat you crazy. Sounds delightful to me. Kind of like Saturday mornings at my house but with more face painting and 74,400 more watts.
Okay, it took three tries but I finally got a version of the survey that asked about who I wanted for headliner/undercard and where the festival went wrong.
The main points that I wanted to get across were that, compared to the tenth Bonnaroo, the fifteenth Bonnaroo started an hour and twenty-four minutes later (12:37 vs 2:01), sets were six minutes shorter even with half-hour Sonic Stage sets factored in for '11 (63 minutes vs 57 minutes) and Late Nights ended an hour earlier (3:57 vs 2:57). All this while increasing the cost 86% ($224.50 vs $334.50 for the first tier) plus adding parking/camping charges.
I also added that asking attendees to dump water was not in keeping with their greening initiatives.
I don't think that they'll be reaching out to add me to their focus group...

As far as I know, the Kalliope stage is run by that burner group who created it. We have some friends in that group and they will put on who they want. So even though they are at Roo, they pretty much have control over who plays and a lot of them are part time DJs and full time desk workers. The sound system it has is amazing and there is so much potential, it just kills me. The thing is, I think that not knowing who will be playing is part of the allure of it and I think a lot of it comes together the day of. That is, as far as guest DJs who are playing Roo already. If they had a better pool of people to DJ between the guests, I would be happy so at least I didn't feel like I was being abused by the low quality tracks and terrible mixing (back spin anyone?).

So Bonnaroo is big on advertising the idea of all night music, but past 2:30 they don't really even have control of who plays, it all depends on who these guys from Kalliope can wrangle in as a surprise guest from the festival?

I'm sure if Bonnaroo said "X is playing your stage at 2am" they would be all down for it and I'm sure Roo has the last word. What I'm saying is that I think the crew from Kalliope stage facilitates a lot of the bookings and schedule and Roo just lets them handle that.

I've actually heard the opposite from someone who is part of the Walter team. One night is essentially Redbull Music Academy DJs (which has not been good at all), Bonnaroo coordinates most of the other time slots (most recycled from the Silent Disco) and Walter gets to fills the leftovers.

That might be correct too, I'm only going off of what I heard about it the first and second year. I haven't spoken, at any length, to anyone who was on Kalliope stage yet for 2016. I remember last year, 2015, when we went the guy who made the speakers had a long (horrible) set and this year most of the times I went by it was no one from the Roo line-up or Silent Disco though they might have been from the RB Academy.
Roo just needs to get on the ball with booking better Djs and electronic acts in general. Give me some small stage where I can go watch bicep, Leon vynehall or dj Koze somewhere and get away from the shitty cheese edm heads.
Their taste in the genre gets seemingly worse every year, which is a shame given how much great music is coming out of it
I really hope someone on inforoo gets into this focus group so we can have the scoopz on what's being discussed.
When Moogfest/Mountain Oasis was still a thing (RIP), about a dozen of us met with a guy from AC Entertainment in 2012 and 2013. It was really cool to hear their side of things.
The lineups were pretty good at that time so we didn't bring it up, kind of regretting that now. We should've been like "KEEP GOOD LINEUPS, K THX."

And now I'm sad I found the schedule from Moog 2012 yesterday and damn, I saw some amazing shows. My schedule was packed full but looking back now so many of those weren't even on my radar then.

It was the best. Sorry to make you sad, but glad we got to experience it together! <3
