Twenty One Pilots are just really popular right now. This is the end of their Blurryface run. Them headlining mid-tier fests shouldn't be getting as much flack as they have been getting. Them headlining Sasquatch is very questionable, because that fest used to have Modest Mouse as a headliner. They make sense at Hangout, because well....it's hangout. They make sense at Firefly, because the last time they played: they had one of the largest audiences to date at Firefly in 2013 or 2014. Lot of people who attended that set, have been wanting TOP to come back. They sell out all their shows, had 4 or 5 chart toppers, two number one albums, and during their fest run they really had bigger audiences than most headliners as an undercard. You may not like them....but I don't think anyone should keep wasting their mind on whether they're a headliner anywhere these days. As far as how much they cost these days, I don't know when that information will come out.
Theyre a headliner because they demand headliner pay
And they demand headliner pay because they attract headliner crowds. And yes, I do think they will attract casual fans, more so (sadly) than a band like LCD Soundsystem
Twenty One Pilots as a headliner is an accurate representation of the music industry at the moment. Eclecticmusicdude mentioned Modest Mouse headlining Sasquatch as a comparative measure, but remember Modest Mouse played sub-headliner on the Lawn Stage in 2015. They won't surpass that slot until they put out another Good News.

Procrastinating today, so here's this:
The headliner debate is never-ending because of the subjective definition of what a headliner should be.
I tossed a few of the discussed headliners into Google Trends. You can't deny Chance and 21P's surge in popularity. For the most part, all of these acts have had comparable popularity at some point over the last 10 years.
Similar to 21 Pilots, Imagine Dragons quickly climbed up the festival lineups, hit chart success and sold out shows. By that logic, they could've likely headlined in 2014. My issue is, when you book someone on short-term success, you run the risk of headlining with some flash in the pan. Imagine looking back on that headline and seeing "Outkast | Foo Fighters | Imagine Dragons". Somehow, it looks much worse than Jack Johnson sitting there.
Final thought: I think a headliner is something that should be earned through sustained success. If you're going to headline with someone with newfound popularity, it sure as hell shouldn't be billed in the first or second slot. I can live with Chance OR 21P at #3/4, but not both
My thought here is if they opt for the 3A/3B headliner route, I feel like they'd opt for someone with a totally different fan base than Chance (Flo vs. Mau5 last year), and I'd imagine a lot of younger people would want to see both (I know I would)
I'm excited to find out if that guy was full of sh*t or not, but to be fair I could have bet my left nut that roo's lineup would leak early and I only have a Chicago source.
If we get Twenty One Pilots and they're Top 3, I look forward to hearing Firefly's take on their booking. IIRC they usually release an interview after the lineup release talking about their thought process.

I don't think this is a hard one to explain at all. If you classify them as a "rock band" which some do, then they are the most radio popular rock band on the planet right now.
if i like this lineup more than bonnaroo's im thinking about heading over to firefly. but with the dumpster fire that all festivals have been as of late, i'm not getting my hopes up

Bingo. My guess is that Lauren King (Red Frog's PR Director) provided the lineup to a few journalists that span local, national/consumer and music industry publications (DelawareOnline.com, Billboard, Spin, Rolling Stone, USA Today, etc.) and that the interviews already took place. By giving that 10:00 a.m. ET release time tomorrow morning it allows for all of the reporters to complete their interviews and write their stories to queue up in their editorial system, this way come 10:00 a.m. it automatically publishes.
This fest booked the Killers twice and Kings of Leon two years in a row (!!) - I don't think they need to justify 21p as if they've disturbed the sanctity of musical integrity.
Kind of random, but does anybody think they will just release the lineup already split up by days? Last year I think the day by day lineup came out a day or two after the full lineup.

I hope so. I'm pretty sure it was around this time last year the day by day came out.
OK, while I am not fully familiar with Chance the Rapper's work once I saw his rise and multiple festival headliner status I gave him a more in depth listen. I was not impressed. He's not a bad artist, but he definitely didn't stand out. What makes him a headliner? Why is he so popular? If you compare his popularity to similar artists he doesn't seem to match up. Let's take the top 3 videos from a few similar artist's Youtube pages (artists determined from recommended videos on the side of Chance's videos) and add up their view totals. And yes while Youtube may not be the best way to determine an artist's skill, it can help determine popularity:
Chance the Rapper - 77m + 11m + 9m = 97 million The Weeknd - 996m + 734m + 565m = 2.29 billion Kendrick Lamar - 88m + 85m + 75m = 248 million Schoolboy Q - 119m + 93m + 49m = 261 million Rae Sremmurd - 509m + 352m + 238m = 1.08 billion Childish Gambino - 85m + 59m + 34m = 178 million Post Malone - 240m + 30m +13m = 293 million Even Lil Dicky has more! - 64m + 43m + 25m = 132 million
The other 5 headliners I ranked over Chance have more views too
Muse - 113m + 92m + 64m = 269 million Flo + Machine - 75m + 62m + 47m = 184 million Mumford - 87m + 31m + 28m = 146 million 21 Pilots - 828m + 599m + 128m = 1.55 billion KOL - 198m + 150m + 31m = 379 million
Why is Chance the Rapper a headliner? What am I missing? What song haven't I heard yet, please tell me. His popularity just doesn't stack up when compared. I just don't know why all these festivals are throwing him out as a headliner. Who is he related to?
All I know is Chance was in a Kit Kat commercial, so that alone makes him headlining worthy for any festival that respects quality candy.

Chance probably eats them all at once instead of breaking them apart. Pure 2nd line quality.

It will just be the regular lineup poster tomorrow. I'm told the breakdown by day won't be out for a while yet.
