Seemed pretty empty and the reaction on Facebook was less than stellar. Not really surprising. I watched him from the Brewery area and don't think I missed much.
stayed for about 30 minutes, I couldn't understand a word, and didn't recognize any songs.
Also it was weird that the screens never zoomed in on the band? It was just a wide shot of the stage the entire time we were there, which I thought was strange.
Alright here is my review of the festival. I'll start with the acts I saw.
Thursday:
Win and Woo - A fun cheese EDM set.
K Flay - I wasn't expecting much from this set and left really impressed. Although the crowd during this show was awful. The group of frat bros behind me kept screaming at each other as the spun their fidget spinners. I wish I had more of a backbone to tell them to shut the fuck up.
EDEN - It was ok. Some parts of the show were really good but there wasn't enough interesting parts to keep me engaged.
Glass Animals - Amazing. I kept my spot after EDEN so I was really close. The production and sound were top notch. Easily one of my favorites of the weekend.
Friday:
Foreign Air - Great set to start out the day. I didn't know any songs coming in but I really dug the sound. I can definitely see these guys getting more popular.
Dreamers - Generic alt rock set.
Judah and the Lion - Not really into their stuff (my group was) but the show was pretty good. If you like their studio work you'll love this show.
Big Wild - A really fun set. Pretty much a poor mans Odesza - in a good way.
Franz Ferdinand - One of my most anticipated of the weekend and I was not disappointed. Sorry to everyone that had to hear me sing during this set.
Banks - Very emotional set. Not really sure if her music is really my thing but she is definitely talented.
Weezer - Probably the best sing along set of the weekend. They played every song I wanted to hear and more.
Miike Snow - Miike Snow killed it. From start to finish this show was drop dead amazing. I'm glad I got to eventually see them because I skipped them at lolla last year to wait for Radiohead.
Flume - Skipped TOP to get a good spot for this show and it was definitely worth it. Flume always puts on a good show.
Saturday:
RKS - Saw them at bonnaroo and it was pretty much the same thing. My cousin really dug it.
Francis and the Lights - I was expecting more but it was a fun set. A lot of the times I thought a song was going somewhere and then ended. He didn't bring chance out either.
Quinn 92 - Not a bad set by any means but I thought it was pretty average. The crowd was really into it though.
The Naked and Famous - Really great. I knew the hits going in but was surprised by the number of slow jams they have. I hope firefly goes back to their roots and books more bands like TNAF.
Bob Dylan - Good thing I knew this set wasn't going to be that good going in. I thought it was decent for what it's worth.
Galantis - My daily dose of cheese EDM and I loved every second of it. There was dancing nonstop from start to finish. Probably my favorite EDM show I saw at both roo and firefly this year (maybe ever).
The Weeknd - I got a closer spot than I did at roo and had an amazing time. The Weeknd really knows how to put on a good show. Also, the crowd was AMAZING during this show which surprised me.
Chance - Chance was one of my favorite shows at bonnaroo but I really didn't have as much fun this time around. I feel like chance is one of those artists you only need to see once.
Saturday was easily my favorite day and probably one of the most "lit" festival days I've ever been apart of.
Sunday:
888 - Generic alt rock set.
Hamilton Leithauser - Really talented. I expected a tad bit more but didn't leave disappointed.
Bleachers - Only caught the last couple songs but they rocked. I'm not even super big into their stuff but it was a great show from what I saw.
The Shins - Really great show but I think the sound was weird at the lawn stage. Did anyone else think this? We were like 5th row from the rail.
Muse - Holy shit. Easily the best show of the festival and one of the best performances I've seen in my life. Definitely see them if you have the chance.
Dillon - Left after a couple songs. Literal shit.
As you can see I was dead tired on Sunday.
Alright now a few comments on the festival in general.... I'll start with my complaints.
Security: Security was horrible and unnecessarily thorough. They made me take my bladder all the out of my camelbak and were very aggressive with my bag which resulted in a slight tear in the fabric. They also wanded us down and made me show my waistline and take off my roo bandanna. THEY WANDED MY FUCKING BANDANNA SEPARATELY. What the fuck are you gonna find in my bandanna?!? The funny part is that even with all that I still snuck everything I wanted to in the festival. I didn't think the added security made me one bit safer and was overall a big pain in the ass. I've had better experiences with the TSA.
Food: Horrible - just god awful. I had to pay 14 dollars for a shitty burger. 12 for three shitty tacos. I go into festivals knowing that the food is gonna be expensive but at least make the food good. After coming from bonnaroo the food at firefly just felt like a big slap in the face to the festival goers.
Late Nights: Am I crazy or is there a lot less late night acts now than in the past? In 2015 I remember there being way more options (especially non EDM options).
Bathrooms: I was happy at the start of the weekend that they added the flushable port a johns like bonnaroo has in the campsites, but at the end of the weekend they smelt awful. The smell radiated all the way across the walkway inbetween main and backyard. I know it shouldn't smell like that because it didn't at roo (and roo had more of these stations).
Alright now for the positives.
Low attendance: I could get a good spot for pretty much every show. If there's anything good about a shitty lineup it's getting good spots for the shows that were actually good.
Wednesday camping: After doing general tent in 2015 I opted to do Wednesday camping and it's 100% worth it. The walk back at the end of the night was way easier. I felt like people were more friendly in Wednesday tent too.
Glowstick throwing: One of my favorite things about firefly is how glowsticks get thrown at the backyard EDM shows. It's great fun if the act is actually good. Galantis delivered this year.
Overall:
Firefly is a pretty good festival but if there isn't a good lineup the firefly experience doesn't do enough to compensate. Don't get me wrong I had fun but I found myself wanting more throughout the whole weekend. If the lineup is good I'll probably be back.
Top 5 Shows: 1. Muse 2. Franz Ferdinand 3. The Weeknd 4. Miike Snow 5. Galantis
Seemed pretty empty and the reaction on Facebook was less than stellar. Not really surprising. I watched him from the Brewery area and don't think I missed much.
As someone who knew he'd perform at that backstage, and specifically stood on the rail at the back stage, it was pretty great.
You definitely had a good spot. We were there too but saw rail open up before Bleachers so decided to move to camp for Muse! After each set and I'm talking Strumbellas, Bleachers, and 30 secs to Mars there was three rows of people and then just empty grass! This was on the left side facing the stage. Was a little disheartening. I thought it was maybe because of the scheduling of Misterwives and Phantogram that took away the crowd.

This - I turned around from 3 rows back during the camp for Muse and realized - oh - I didn't have to do this. Totally wierd

He was just a really bad/stretch of a booking
So stupid. Even if it was as reported a last second panic booking, they should have released the lineup with 4 headliners and then used the Dylan money to announce a solid mid-tier addition every month leading up to the fest. Would have kept momentum and anticipation leading up to the fest and created a deeper undercard.
I've heard some people had issues with Security, it was ridiculously easy for me to bring in everything I wanted. Didnt shake the water bottles unlike Gov Ball, barely checked any pockets of bags. I think that the security at the Lot 18 entrance might have been tighter than on the other side of the fest. I'd echo the Weeknd crowd being great. Almost everyone around me knew every word to his stuff

It would have been so much better if they like you say used the Dylan money and spread out over a couple of artist at the mid tier level.
Also it was weird that the screens never zoomed in on [Dylan's] band? It was just a wide shot of the stage the entire time we were there, which I thought was strange.
He also does this during his own regular shows. Why even bother with the screens all together then.

had no issues with security, don't know if it's because i had vip? they barely opened my bag.
favorite sets - o.a.r. .. haven't seen them in years but i remembered how much fun they were live (and i didn't have to sit through train for this one!) - ok go - hamilton leithauser.. super small crowd, with a few fans sprinkled in..same for his coffeehouse set which ended early... hoping to catch him on his regular tour - nahko and medicine for the people - the naked and famous - the shins
dylan was better than i expected... friends and i were just laying in the grass listening to his set, which is all you need to do
twenty one pilots was the same show as a the last two times.... left after 3 songs
the weeknd was pretty decent, as was muse.
hoping for more indie/alternative for next year..
as for the food, i've learned to stick with the food trucks. many of the regular food vendors are produced by red frog. the butt hutt, humpty dumplings and nyc chicken tender food trucks were amazing.

Wanted to try the Dumplings truck by the Main Stage but the line was too long whenever I was over there. The Grilled Cheese truck by the Lawn Stage was pretty great. On Sunday, they were basically giving out 2 sandwiches for the price of 1. The other Lawn food truck was good as well. There was a chicken teriyaki place next to the Chicken Finger truck that had good noodles.
Favorite sets: Phantogram Miike Snow Hamilton Leithauser Franz Ferdinand Gryffin Muse Maggie Rogers
The smaller crowd definitely gave it a little bit of a better feel for me, but the lack of shows I wanted to see kind of cancelled that out. I usually get to about 25 shows per Firefly. This year I struggled to get to 16 and many of those were watching the Main Stage from The Brewery. Hopefully there is a much improved lineup next year.
Security wise, at least in the VIP lines, they seemed to put a lot of scrutiny on younger kids. Whenever I went through, they barely looked in my bag even though I had a case for my glasses and one for my ear plugs. The kid in front of me seemed to be in his early 20s are got searched heavily (they found a bottle on him). I don't really have a problem with any increase in security, but the line to get in Saturday afternoon was ridiculous when they wouldn't let VIP into the gates.
Damn I should have tried the food trucks. Live and learn I guess. Also I'm sure my age/appearance had an effect on the way I was searched. I'm 20 and have long hair.

Best sets: 1.) Muse - Wow. Now THAT's how to headline a festival. I was blown away. I've seen over 675 bands live, and that was easily in my top 5. 2.) Miike Snow - I had seen a full concert on YouTube and was expecting a letdown; it was the exact opposite. Incredible set. It far exceeded expectations. Great live band. Great setlist. 3.) Phantogram - They're perfect for Firefly, for that time slot, for festivals in general. I wish I had left the Shins set sooner (even though they were really good). "Calling All" is a great addition to their live set. Honorable mentions to Flume, Franz Ferdinand (though the crowd was mostly dead except for "Take Me Out"), Anna Lunoe, and Sunflower Bean.
Best moments: 1.) Seeing Barns Courtney rocking out, jumping, and singing about 20 feet from me during a really good Franz Ferdinand set. 2.) Shaed continuing to perform sans any amplification after the Coffeehouse speakers kept going out. 3.) The weirdos dressed up in crazy costumes dancing up front during Hamilton Leithauser's enjoyable Lawn set. There were also a trio of dudes who looked like Borat. All the freaks must be Walkmen fans? Honorable mention: The TEDx talks on Thursday morning were a mixed bag, but there were a few really engaging speakers. Also, the bulgogi was awesome.
Worst sets: 1.) Missio - What the hell was that garbage? 2.) Judah and the Lion - I caught about 5 songs, including a "Mr. Brightside" cover. It was awful. 3.) Twenty One Pilots - I'm not a fan. I watched 6 or 7 songs, most with a ukulele involved, and I wasn't impressed. What was up with those gunshot noises?
Most underrated: 1.) Bishops Briggs (Treehouse set) - Everyone around me was really into her set. She has a ton of potential. Very memorable. 2.) Sunflower Bean (both sets) - They played mostly new stuff and braved the heat during their Porch set, but they still rocked! 3.) Anna Lunoe - I had a blast in the Pavilion for her set. It wasn't Flume, but she still put on a great show. Honorable mentions to Bob Moses, Shaed, and Banks.
Most disappointing: 1.) Glass Animals - I just wasn't feeling it. It was okay. I had high expectations, and it felt half as good as Two Door Cinema Club last year. 2.) Lil Dicky - Same thing. It was fun at times, but his set just didn't deliver like I had hoped. I ended up leaving early to watch more of Banks. 3.) 30 Seconds to Mars - It felt boring and cliche. Honorable mentions to Busta Rhymes (way too much turning off the music for the crowd to sing; came on 30 minutes late) and Chance the Rapper (his set was great at moments but often a little dull).
Overall takeaway: It was ok. There were some fun sets, and I'm VERY glad I saw Muse. The crowds were rarely large; the only time I faced a large crowd was getting in from the North Hub to see T-Pain. It was hot for most of the weekend, and the kids around me at most sets seemed more interested in drugs and social media than paying any attention to the bands. I probably will not return for a 3rd year unless they have a great lineup.
I think you may be avoiding the 2018 thread because of the thread title. If it bothers you, let me know and Ill change it.
Nah. I honestly didn't even know there was a 2018 thread until today. Why would that bother me? I actually got a laugh out of it. I haven't been that active on here or FF lately, but things are starting to get more busy with the presale, etc.
