This won't mean shit to anyone but me, VC and jaikicker. But local New Orleans legend, Mr. Okra, passed away. He used to drive around in his Mr. Okra truck with a megaphone, "I got bananas. I got onions. I got..." He'd often stop in the afternoon at an unnamed bar in the barmuda triangle to get a drink to continue his drive around town selling produce. He was a super nice guy. RIP Mr. Okra.

"III gaaahhh bbbnnnnaannnnnnss.... II GGGAAaaaahhh osssssnnsionss... III ggaaaa .."
The first time I ever heard Mr. Okra, I had no fucking idea what was going on. I was sitting in my house and heard someone slowly yelling through a megaphone some distance away. I muted my tv and turned off my window unit to see if I could figure it out. I could hear him better, but not any more clearly. I even walked outside to see wtf it was. Was it some crazy politician or conspiracy theorist trying to alert the masses? Was it a cop on a bull horn trying to talk someone off a ledge? What was going on? It was honestly weeks later and numerous occasions of hearing him before I starting asking around about it. Everyone you ask would just laugh and say they'd heard it, too, until someone finally said it was Mr. Okra. Those loud, monotone mubbles he was saying were types of produce he had for sale that day. Our very own ice cream truck filled with fresh fruits and veggies. The man was a legend, and I sadly never once bought anything from him.

And since I seem to be posting about people who died, that nobody gives a shit about. I will continue that trend with this weekend's passing of Bollywood star Sridevi Kapoor, who was only 54. She lost her balance and fell and drowned in her bathtub.

I saw that she had died but hadn't seen the COD. What a random, scary way to go...

Apparently 110,000 people die in a bathtub/pool per year. It takes less than 10 mins and only 4" to kill you. (That's what she said, inappropriately?)

I would assume that the vast majority of them aren't middle-aged celebrities though.
And you know that she must have survived more than that in her lifetime. [He responded, also inappropriately.]
75% are children under 5. So yeah, totally not middle-aged celebrities that aren't even over the limit on alcohol. Think about this for a minute... How many times have you almost fallen while in the shower? I would think that other 25% include drugs/alcohol or falling, hitting head and landing facedown or maybe a combo of both. Fucking terrifying.
My first stat was incorrect, btw. It is 110,000 die in a bathtub/shower per year. An average of 10 people die each day from unintentional drownings (including in swimming pools and in the bathtub), per data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I misread and lumped. The 75% was correct though.
RIP. He was my first exposure to popular physics. I listened to one of his books on tape the summer I had a job buttering biscuits. 2002 I think. Instilled in me a deep appreciation of science and reason that never left.
Seriously the greatest scientific mind of our time. He changed my whole outlook on science and life when I was in jr. high. I am very saddened by this news.
"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going." — The Grand Design
That's a bummer. It was so sad when Ralph Wilson died so I feel for you.
Did they ever resolve that stuff with his vampire family members?
Sort of, it was approved to go to the wife, but his family is great. So it is going to be crazy. NOLA.com already has an article about "flux" of the teams. It was legit posted 8 minutes after his death was official. Like can y'all chill the fuck out already?
Toys R Us announced it was going out of business, and the founder Charles P. Lazarus 94, died. Coincidence? Died of old age? Or of a broken heart? You decide.
