Tom Wolfe died yesterday. I really enjoyed The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test when I was younger, but I don't think I ever read any of his other books.
I was 16 and had just finished One Flew Over the Cukoo's nest, which I'd read because it was on a list of banned books. I found Electric Kool Aid on a shelf at a girlfriend's house and recognized Kesey, and her dad said I could borrow it and read it. I grew up in a very conservative, affluent, bible belt suburb and I wanted so badly to have a group of weirdo friends like the pranksters. It put a lot of crazy ideas into an impressionable high school sophomore.

Her death is another terrible and sad example of the devastation mental illness can cause. I feel for her family.
