What a great festival!!! The venue was superb and the atmosphere was just what I expected! Glad I was able to run into Rothric and Rummy 500 (first time meeting Rummy 500). The art installations were just incredible. About the only thing I have to complain about was missing the Bjork VR. My best sets were def Aphex Twin and Squarepusher! Honorable mentions go to Tobacco, Matmos, and Oneohtrix Point Never. I don't know that Day for Night could ever recreate that magic that happened this weekend, but I'd hit this fest up again.
I'll get overall and final thoughts in later. We just got home, and dropped off the rental car. Sunday was kind of on the bizarre side for me. I went a little early so I could go upstairs and see the second floor installations and try the chicken and waffles. I got the waffle chicken sandwich with ancho honey butter. It was delicious though the chicken was way better than the waffle because that was cold. Also, Sunday was fn freezing to me. I was pretty well wrapped and insulated but it really took the silk screened Deep Eddy/Day 4 Night free bandana to really keep me warm. I was fortunate to run into Sgt Blotter and JGW76 a couple of times and finally ran into cmack pretty late, and we had been trying to meet up all weekend. Regrettably I never crossed paths with Fuzzywarbles though we were trading texts and trying. I think he finally found where we were at but it was probably after we left as I didn't see that last text until today. You have a standIng free drink of your choice sir.
I only had a couple of must sees so I wandered around most of the day. Music was as follows:
I went over and watched the first couple of Nothing's songs. It was nothing special at that point. So I walked over to see Vacation Eyes. They were an all girl band from SFCA that has relocated and has some ties to Houston. It's guitar, sax, drums and bass. It was pretty simplistic and sort of sounded like a poor man Madness though not really ska-y and more punk-y. I watched a couple of their tunes and went back over to catch the end of Nothing. Their last couple of songs were pretty good, and the sound was loud. I never get enough guitar rock so that was good for me.
Next slot I wandered over to the ice cold yellow stage on the windier and north facing side of the fest. Daed was on, and I figured I'd go see a few minutes. It wasn't anything special just a guy and chick doing electronic. I walked over to S U R V I V E to see a few minutes of that. It was about 4 guys on stage doing some kind of mix of synths and laptops. It sounded okay but I was ready for Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. I stopped at Ariel Pink to watch a couple of their songs. I don't know them at all. It sounded kind of pop and rock with some satire or comedy thrown in. It wasn't anything particularly great or complicated, but it was clear they know how to play their instruments. I'm not sure if there were 5 or 6 in that band. I made it in time for the second Uncle Acid song and stayed the bulk of the set. It was pretty good though a little hard to describe. Singer announced they were there to ruin our weekend which was kind of funny. They were sort of a bluesy-rocky-psychadelic guitar band with 2 guitarists, a bass player and drummer. It was a little sloppy in parts, but it was pretty cool. I'd see them again.
Next slot I walked inside on the way to Lightning Bolt to see the beginning of Matmos. It was described as an experimental electronic duo and that's what it was. A lot of what I hard was noises and sounds and sort of an ethereal buzz in the background. I got a very limited part of that set but JGW76 told me it was starting to almost sound good. I would have walked back in, but it was a short set, and I hadn't seen Lightning Bolt before. I was very impressed by their bass player who was able to get a lot of great fuzz and even some trebly guitar parts off his bass. I really enjoyed the band's energy and performance but it was cold and they played on stage instead of in the crowd. Lots of people were pogoing, head banging and stuff so that was was cool, but it seemed more like a hot day set would have sent the crowd surfing and slam dancing.
I had about 10 minutes so I walked over to Marcel, Rami and Bachar. That sounded really good and there was a nice sized crowd there for that which was cool and the sound production was really clean for the part of that set I saw.
Next I walked back to the back (yellow stage) to see some of Anklepants. I'm not really sure what he did other than move around and possibly play some noises out of a small horn/mic/effects control panel. There were a ton of people over there for that particular stage, and he was getting some cheers. I'm obviously unschooled about who he is and what he does besides what I've seen on YouTube and these 10-15 minutes. I assume he would at some point build it up to whatever the crescendo of the set was. But it was just a big question mark for me. My middle kid's gf was about hitting Mykki Blanco, so I walked back inside and stayed most of the set. I really don't know what to think. Mykki is very high energy and dramatic and can sing okay and rap in different styles. It was hyper dramatic which suits in with the gender bender aspects of who he is, but it was strange for sure though not terrible by any means. We caught a few minutes of Kamasi who was sounding sweet as always, but they were a little late, and I wanted to go see RZA's set. This was a pretty fun set where he freestyled, did some solo stuff and of course some Wu Tang. I liked his backing band Stone Mecca. The problem I had with this set was that he brought up another rapper to act as his hype guy (didn't catch his name), and they proceeded to do some right side/left side stuff. I realize he is an old school rapper, and audience shoutbacks are part of that game. But he doesn't need to use gimmickry at this point in his career because his fans know who he is and are happy to be there watching him rap or sing. Overall this came off as an entertaining set for me.
Next I went over and watched most of Squarepusher's set. Graphics and sound were up to par for the festival, but I wasn't a big fan of the music. It was a very housey set, and most of his work is better than that for me. So the music was a bit disappointing.
Next we went over to Bjork Digital and stayed in there for a while. It was kind of packed, but there was just some really dark purple and green illumination smear up by the stage. There wasn't any graphics while we were there, but I'm sure that changed at some point? I'm sure if you were up close it might have been meaningful; but it sounded more like background music from where I was.
I walked over to a few minutes of Futurelix, and they sounded okay. I'll look for them in the future. It was a little bit jamtronic, and I only caught a few minutes. Little Dragon was on as I walked by the main/red stage so I listened to about 5 minutes of that. They don't do anything for me, though the sound production was notable. It was time to get over to the Surfers. I was pretty jacked up to see them as it's been over 20 years since I last saw them live. It took a long, long time for them to get everything jacked up and set up. But something was wrong with the sound. It started off with vocals too low or effects or guitar and whatever and was a little rocky. I stayed about 40 minutes, and the show was getting a little more psychedelic, but I was getting bored with the sound. Visuals were great throughout, but they just didn't quite seem to have it together. I guess you never know what you are going to get with them, but I found the show disappointing.
I walked back inside and saw about 10 minutes of Sophie. It was okay, but I don't really listen to the type of music he plays. I'm not hating, just saying how I feel about it.
I walked over to watch the beginning of Kaskade thinking maybe it would be a little harder of a set. By the time he started playing the third consecutive pop style song I had more than enough and got the fuck out of there. We figured Travis Scott could be worth seeing. I don't want to completely hate, because he can rap and did have some okay parts. But it was so overly voice tuned that it got tedious for me fast. Plus he was like 40 minutes late. A lot of the crowd was into it, but eh.
Finally we went over to watch about 30-40 minutes of Arca. He was also very dramatic and would play different styles including some island Hispanic, techno, house and what have you. It was okay, but those styles really don't do anything for me. A lot of people were getting down as it was loud and Arca was putting his heart into his performance. I guess if you wanted to go to a blowdown underground dance party in South America, it could sound a lot like what I heard.
Overall it really wasn't that good of a music day for me especially compared to Saturday. I got to see a lot of weird sets and music and performers and styles I don't listen to. So I'll give the day that. It just wasn't for my tastes. That's not to say I had a bad time or a bad day. It was actually a pretty fun festival day overall.
Well, going to this festival was a great way to finish my live music filled 2016. I'm extremely tired as I flew from NYC to Houston on Saturday morning and came back to New York early this morning (aka almost no sleeping). So I couldn't have much chance to discover Houston, next time I'll make sure I arrive a little earlier so that I can see what's around.
I'm not gonna write a super detailed review right now, but here are my highlights of the weekend:
1. Aphex Twin: It was one of the best sets I've seen this year. I think I have to go to the Best Concerts of 2016 thread and update my list. 2. Blood Orange: There was some sound issues, but still such a fun set. 3. Oneohtrix Point Never: Could only watch the second half of it. 4. The Jesus and Mary Chain: So sad I had to leave early to catch OPN, but they were both great. 5. Arca: I could only listen to the second half of his set as I was at Björk VR, but it sounded like a lot fun. I may have some damage in my ears though, it was so loud for me (and I used ear plugs).
I watched the Björk DJ set too, but I'm kinda bummed to miss UMO. I should've done that and come back for the second part of DJ set. Björk VR was quite cool (I was lucky enough to register for 11 pm Sunday), but I still think I wouldn't have waited too much if I hadn't registered prior to festival.
As per the other art installations, my favs were Tundra's Outlines, UVA's Musica Universalis, and AV&C + Houzé's Phases. I could also catch all three visual art live performances throughout the weekend, and Limb's performance on Saturday night was very enjoyable.
I agree with esteban , I enjoyed Saturday more than Sunday, but overall, it was a great festival. I'm so glad I came to this fest even it was just for 36 hours. This and Panorama are two of my favorite fests this year.
Had an amazing time, Aphex Twin was easily my highlight of the weekend. Such a powerful performance. Need time to reflect on it, but likely one of my top shows of all time.
Everything about it was perfect for me. The music, the energy of the crowd, even the weather. I don't think I've ever seen a happier crowd. The ones that stayed through the whole show experienced something once in a lifetime.
Other top acts for me (in no order):
Liars Tycho Blook Orange Squarepusher Oneohtrix Point Never (seriously one of the most evil/dark/twisted/weirdest shows I've ever seen. Loved it, extremely disturbing in the best way possible.) Welcome to Houston Uncle Acid Little Dragon Arca
Definitely some logistics that could be improved. I can understand the VIP people being upset, it does seem like they got a pretty raw deal. Bjork VR was disappointing as well, was hoping to experience it.
One thing, it was too fucking dark on the first floor. They could have easily put in some cool color shifting LED lights that would have provided soft illumination while simultaneously not distracting from the stages/art and adding to the psychedelic aesthetic of the fest.
But from my GA perspective, loved it. Especially when you consider the value of the $100 blind presale.
So many of the people complaining on FB act like they've never been to a festival before.
Enjoyed the art installations, was fun to just wander around the second floor.
Can't wait to go back next year, already bought my blind presale for 2017.
Had a great time hanging with lots of inforoo people, always enhances the experience.
Will expand upon this later after I have some time to sleep and recover.
Access to the Yellow Stage sucked. You had to go all the way around the facility to get there when they could have just let people go through the warehouse. It wasted 5-10 minutes every time you wanted to walk over there (and back).
Configuration of the red stage - stage was awesome in front of the skyline, but when it was really packed, it was tight getting through because you had lines and crowd to negotiate. This is minor obviously, but it was similar in the pre-room for the Blue stage as the inside bathroom lines were outrageous and blocking traffic.
Green stage bathrooms. Some were on an angle back, which was odd. Also, for big shows they didn't have enough on that side of the fest.
That's pretty much it. So nothing really major though the Yellow Stage's access should be improved.
The weekend itself was fucking bomb. We lucked into that pimped out Air B and B. Everyone in Houston was really nice and friendly. The diversity of the attendees was striking. I realize Houston is a very diverse city, but you could have just as easily been on the subway in Toronto or London. I appreciated that. Apparently a sizable contingent of the fest were gays and lesbians. I think Mykki called for "where my gay people at" and "where my straight people at?" It wasn't quite 50/50 but a loud response from our gay brothers and sisters. Obviously that was a freak show set, but I think the overall eclectic nature of the arts and music there would appeal to a wide variety of people, and it did. That's very cool as we transition away from a white patriarchal hierarchy.
Lots of people were partying pretty hard. Me included. I drank on the order of 12-15 16 oz Heinikens each day, vodkas, whiskeys (ran into a friend who brought a handle of Buffalo Trace in, which was clutch at times). I never got disasterous and actually avoided a lot of premium temptations which is probably good for me.
Food overall was good. I finished the night off with a bulgogi PO-boy sandwich from Casian sans they mayo but with sriracha. That was very good, and my middle kid told me cmack told him he ate there 2 or 3 times. I'm disappointed I didn't get to try more food, as Oh My Gogi was on the list. But again everything I had was pleasing. That's important to me.
Some friends of my kids got screwed over with an Air B and B that somehow had interior moisture and everything was mildewed. Luckily we had a big enough place to adopt those 4 for the weekend as they are all really cool festival party people that my kids chill with all the time. We were 4 miles away and a 9.00 UBER ride, so that was clutch.
Memorable sets for me were:
Bjork VR - Greatness
Run the Jewels - That was my favorite time seeing them (Buku and Roo 15). That set was bananas. That's when the front came through, and I was prepared with my raincoat. It went from mid 70s night time to 40s pretty quick. And being a little wet made things colder. But it's part of the experience. People were super amped up and since I listen to them all the time, I knew the lyrics to the 3 or 4 songs I knew off 1 (which I own) and obviously lie cheat steal etc. They had the crowd going really hard.
Tycho - I love Tycho. I've never seen a DJ set and don't know if your boy still does that at US festivals or only plays live sets with the Tycho band. Some mishaps with the broken guitar string and then a sour note or two, but it was at least an "8" Tycho set for me. I will see them at Buku in March, as that's really what's holding most of my interest in going.
Welcome to Houston - That shit was incredible (in parts) for me since I love Slim Thug and Lil Flip. Meeting and dapping off Slim Thug in the burger line before the set was awesome. He's a bad motherfucker who had time to chat with an old 50+ year old white guy. He was very nice and appreciated my respect. At the same time that's a big and buff ass mf I'm guessing nobody fucks with. He's got the [tm] on Boss. Seeing Lil Flip and DJ Mike Watts do game over was a true highlight for me as well. This was such a great opening set, and Z-Ro, Bun B, Lil Keke, Devin the Dude, Paul Wall and Mike Jones was awesome for me. There was a ton of bling on that stage and whoever that Asian guy was with the big diamond encrusted medallion. Damn. I was guessing 5-6 hundred thousand in gold chains. Haha ------ Daughter says Bjork VR, Run the Jewels, RZA and Sophie. ------ I loved the venue. The decommissioned building was a bit dank and musty, but that's part of the attack. And then there were some spots on the carpet in front of the red stage that smelled like sweaty socks. I guess there isn't much they could do about that. But I will say it was nice standing on carpet as it is a little easier on the feet than just concrete.
Great seeing everyone I ran into and sorry I missed the rest of you. I had a ball. All my kids did too and we all decided that we could easily go back. I saw no one get arrested and only one guy laid up due to a twisted ankle or knee, but I did see EMS moving through the crowd a couple of times, so I'm sure some people fell out. Cops were super chill and mostly friendly. This was a different type of experience, and obviously is more hard core than Festival X or whatever. Even with a lax (for me) musical day on Sunday, I still had a banging ass time as apparently most other people on here did too. I would give the fest a solid "A" if I would have liked Sunday's music more and if I could have seen some more of the musical sets like Kamasi and Thundercat. But I'm giving the weekend the A and the fest a B+ (A+ for effort and what they are striving for). I'll get a few other things in later, but if the lineup is as interesting as it had been the last two years, I would easily go back in 17.
I am pissed at myself for bailing before the end of the Buttholes set as CoS says they closed out with Shah Sleeps. That's a fuckup on my part.
Yes The entire set was new material. And honestly the new material wasn't as great as the stuff from his last 2 albums. I did like that last 4 songs he played, but I'm kinda sad that I missed most all of Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats for it. I had initially planned on splitting them, but I just couldn't leave because I wanted to hear all of Ariel's new material.
Butthole Surfers setlist: (made some mistakes, had to jump through some albums to get a few names right. Someone uploaded roughly the same setlist to setlists.fm but has the encore as Lou Reed, which it might have been? Sounded different to me but I'll take their word for it)
100 Million People Dead Hey Roky Cherub Pittsburg to Lebanon Creep in the Cellar Dum Dum Fast Graveyard Edgar Colored FBI Guy Some Dispute Over T-shirt Sales Goofy’s Concern Lady Sniff Pepper Who Was In My Room Last Night? Gary Floyd The Shah Sleeps In Lee Harvey’s Grave
E: Jam (Lou Reed)
Gibby's daughter or some tiny relative was out playing Theresa's spot for Shah, too f'n cool.

Did not get into Bjork VR. Longinus and I waited for a while Sat and Sun nights but it wasn't happening. Weak. Hopefully her vids will be available when VR tech is more ubiquitous and I can try it then.
Overall, the festival was great. The bottlenecks were the main annoying part. The people were overall fun and the vibe of the fest was great. Security was pretty much nil going in so I always had liquor.
The art installations were super cool, really enjoyed them. The UVA exhibit was def worth the wait in line to check out.
Best sets of the weekend for me: 1. John Carpenter (Was on the rail, he was cheesing out, he was cheesing me out as well. Band rocked hard as well.) 2. Marcel Khalife (Walked right up to the rail, they were amazing! Totally blew me away, was not expected to be so good) 3. Aphex Twin (Missed first 30 mins, and most of the rain it seems. Feeling/seeing the North Wind roll into town was unreal) 4. Butthole Surfers (Got irritated by them starting late and Travis Scott dildos acting like jerks around us...) 5. Squarepusher (so fn good!) 6. Jesus & Mary chain (Love that guitar tone..) 7. Anklepants (Amazingly weird.....he should open for Skinny Puppy) 8. Tycho (didn't know much about them, they kicked ass) 9. Liars (Was way better than I expected) 10. Chelsea Wolfe (incredible voice)
Honorable Mention: Kamasi Washington. Would have made the cut if they had been on time.
What happened with Blonde Redhead? We went to check them out after Anklepants and they were over 20+ mins before set was scheduled to end. Did they even show up?

Awesome meeting rothric, rummy, phi, tristan, jones jupiter. Sorry I lost y'all after squarepusher, had to grab my friend who showed up because his crew was bumming him out, couldn't leave him solo. then we had to meetup with another friend who was showing up just for bjork dj set. tried to find the group at bjork dj set but despite rothric's best efforts to identify your location i couldn't track you down.
Brief summary of logistical issues:
I had a marvelous time, and agree with a lot of the positive things already said, but as a counter to the positive things the festival definitely had some logistical and sound issues that decreased my enjoyment.
-Sound: The Red/Main stage was generally great sound, thankfully, but sound at the blue/indoor stage was a muddled boomey mess, no bite to the highs and no definition to the bass. And the green stage suffered from various volume issues on multiple sets. The yellow stage sounded fine.
-Travelling between stages: That choke point inside between the cloud art installation and the most direct path to the blue stage was ridiculous and avoidable. Just don’t put an installation there, or make it smaller. Wasn’t quite as bad when you went around the other way but there was still a choke point. The whole getting up and down the floors was kind of a mess too, with certain stairs being up only and certain stairs down only. I feel they could have labelled the stairs more clearly, maybe with some big lit up arrows or something. There should have been a path between the yellow stage and inside, in fact there was a huge opening but they wouldn’t let people go in and out that way for some reason. A path there would have made my life easier and attracted more attention to the smaller artists on the yellow stage.
Brief observations:
-Welcome to Houston was fantastic. In 2005-2006 I was way into Houston rap. No way to say this without sounding incredibly nerdy but that year I pretty much just quit drugs and played world of warcraft and worked. The tank in my WoW guild was obsessed with Houston rap and insisted we listen to it together, so I got into Bun, Lil Keke, Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Slim Thug, pretty much anything Houston that could be chopped and screwed. So fun to see DJ Michael Watts and all those guys playing the hits.
-Art installations upstairs were dope. Love the red lazers.
-Banks was a visually interesting set. I dig the music but did she have a pretty serious backing track going? Her singing didn't sound natural.
-Oneohtrix Point Never - love this guy, the set was cool and everything, but for the first time in a long time I was at a set wondering if maybe, MAYBE this might be the type of music best experienced at home on my big speakers, sipping coffee alone and sitting on my couch. It might be just that the sound at the blue stage/indoor stage was kind of a hot mess. It was plenty loud, and fine for a big party I guess but I couldn't hear the nuances in the music, the treble didn't have any bite, and the bass was very soft and flabby. Kind of like listening to a show on $40 Logitech desktop computer speakers only they are really really really loud. I felt the same way sound-wise about every set I saw on the blue stage.
-Blood Orange, bad sound issues on the green stage. Could barely hear his voice. Bummer.
-Odesza: I’ve tried and tried to get into Odesza’s studio material but it always comes across as weak sauce to me. Maybe it’s the mixing it always sounded dainty and dull. Live it comes across much better and dancier, I enjoyed myself.
-Aphex Twin. Perfect, show of the weekend, been listening to him for 20 years first time seeing him, happy neato yay etc.
-Anklepants peed on phi
-Kamasi had sound issues, only caught a bit but I think the musicians were also struggling with the intense cold.
-RZA and Stone Mecca, pretty great show. Bass overpowered a lot of the instruments at the green stage, but RZAs vocals were clear, and shit was loud so it was easy to get into. A real treat.
-Squarepusher, second best show of the weekend. A+
-Bjork DJ set. Kind of ridiculous honestly. You couldn't see her. Was she even there? My friend who is a huge Bjork fan just wanted to lay eyes on Bjork, couldn't they throw her face up on the fucking screen? The song selection was OK but again the sound at the blue stage was a hot mess, see OPN above.
-Butthole Surfers - Were 25 minutes late, I could make out all the instruments and vocals fine but it wasn't nearly loud enough. The last time I saw them was in a small club and it was loud as hell, the SPL was totally brutal, and I think that is a necessary aspect of a Butthole Surfers show. Was glad to see them again but had a hard time engaging due to low volume. Which was weird because RZA on the same stage had plenty of decibels.
-Kaskade - just kidding I didn't see Kaskade. Earlier in the day we had lunch at Kenny & Ziggys, I got a huge chopped liver and pastrami sandwich and I had half of it waiting for me back at the house, so I ubered home and finished my sandwich and took a scorching hot shower.
^^^picture of sandwich i chose over Kaskade. Sorry Kaskade one of these days I'll actually catch one of your sets.
Tobacco's set had f'd up sound. We had to leave the Blue Stage due to a blown speaker sounding like butthole.
Bjork DJ set was a clusterfuck. Having that happen plus not doing VR was super annoying. It made me feel like she wasn't even there and I just got baited in. Ah well, at least I've seen her before.
Whoever on here recommended Daughters, you have godawful tastes as they SUCCCKKKEEED the big one. Goddamn they were terrible. One of the worst singers I've ever heard def.
WORST PROBLEM: Why Day4Night smell like doodoo so bad? Saturday was def worse x10. Smelled like someone burning diarrhea most of Saturday.
Thought the fest merch was pretty weak. Luckily on Sunday evening I found a guy near a stairwell selling awesome bootleg tshirts ripping off Stanley Mouse's 'Zebra Man" art from a 1966 Elevators poster, with bands on the back and everything.
Also got that Surfers shirt with the American Flag that says "Pride of America", the Bjork litho and an Aphex Twin fest limited 12'' vinyl.

Haha I think that was me. I mean, he doesn't really sing. It's been 10 years since I've seen them though, so they could be horrible now.
Regarding Blonde Redhead: Their flight was cancelled twice due to weather coming out of NY. Once Saturday afternoon, then Sunday morning. Per a woman who claimed to be friends with them in the crowd.
lol @ Sangvincent. Yea, he didn't 'sing', he had 'his own thing' going. Crazy they are from the NE or wherever as they def have the "Panhandle Buttrock" vibe going.

Yea I figured something like that had to happen. Sucks, was really looking forward to seeing them. Not super into them or anything but they would have been cool live and they are a band that will come like 5+hrs to me and I'm not into driving that far to see them.
As per Ariel Pink's set, as Longinus said, it was all new material. I liked a few songs a lot but for the most part I wasn't overly impressed. Dude didn't play any old songs, which was disappointing as I've been cracking out on him for months.
Yeah, they had up on the screens that they had to cancel due to flight issues. Shit happens.
For any of the Bjork fans, don't forget to download the Biophilia app to play with in your spare time! Work sucks, and it's still cold here in New Orleans. I'm dreaming of a green and warm Christmas!

That’s weird, because that sounds like a completely different band than the one I know. They were "grindcore". They had songs that were like 2 minute blasts of insanity with screaming, blast beats and some crazy guitar riffs.
Awesome shit Phi. The photos really capture the essence of what it was like with the varied up lighting, random shadows and colors, performers, and crowd. I sent my daughter over that shot of Sophie you posted last night. She was like, "oh I thought he had on overalls from where we were standing." Well yeah, but fishnet too.
I still don't understand Anklepants at all. That is zany sideshow shit. Maybe that's what it's supposed to be and why I'm not understanding.

When I think of grindcore I think of The Locust, and they sounded nothing like them.

Anklepants can only be compared to Skinny Puppy.
Yea they were pretty similar. They must have really changed in the last 10 years.
I had a great weekend. It was fun to hang out with some inforoo people and I was happy to finally get to briefly meet 3post1jack1 who is not as old as you would expect a massive Phish fan to be.
My favorite sets kinda in order: Aphex Twin - I wouldn't say I quite "got it" as much as some of the other people around here but it was pretty amazing to see an absolute god do whatever the fuck he wanted while seeming to control the weather. He played tons of different types of music and messed around with sounds and synths you really don't here too often. Arca - I expected this to be weird/noisy and more experimental, but it was actually incredibly fun. I was getting kinda tired before his set started, but he re-energized me and I ended up dancing my ass off. I agree that is was loud as fuck, didn't really realize at the time but my ears were still ringing the next morning. Squarepusher - This was also less weird than I expected it to be. It was fun and also amazing to see another legend doing what he does. Liars - Glad you guys turned me onto them before the fest, it was fun, dancey and weird. Unkown Mortal Orchestra - We checked out the second half of them after Squarepusher because my brother got pretty into them leading up to the fest and I had a really great time at their set, I'm pretty sure I've seen them before and didn't enjoy it nearly as much so that was a cool surprise.
Other stuff I had fun at - Welcome To Houston, the last song of Tycho, Uncle Acid, Lightning Bolt, Little Dragon, Anklepants
I thought the light/art installations were pretty dope. My group got a little trippy on Saturday and got a little lost in the upstairs light shows which is why we ended up missing most of Tycho.
I was not a fan of OPN. There were parts that were pretty, but it was so intense for the state of mind I was in, and the music made me feel like I was in a crack house.
2. Marcel Khalife (Walked right up to the rail, they were amazing! Totally blew me away, was not expected to be so good)
That was an awesome surprise. I walked by after Lightning Bolt and it was sounding so good I couldn't leave.
Aphex was definitely my number 1 and I'm sure John Carpenter would have been up there had I not missed it. Jesus and the Mary Chain, Kamasi, and Blood Orange probably round out my top 5. I really blew it getting in late Sunday and missing Nothing, Survive, and Uncle Acid.
lol luckily not on me, but he did "pee" (no one knows what the fluid actually was), on some photographers in the pit. i got video of it from a dry distance.

I got some excellent videos of Aphex Twin's set. Click the video and head to my channel to check them out. Would really appreciate some help with track ID's (I know this one is Polynomial-C)
