Watching all the folks in shorts waiting for Ubers trying to escape the rain and wind was pretty hilarious. I was feeling their pain too.
Such a great festival experience. I'm excited about today because I have a lot less music that are must sees for us before seven so we are taking our time to fully take in the art and people.
Ranking the full and partial sets I saw: Blood Orange -despite his mic being basically off for half the songs. He reminded me so much of prince. His female vocalists, especially the buzz cut white girl, we're so good. And his sax player was such a bad ass Run the Jewels John Carpenter - that guitarist was sick Banks - I can look past the how much she relied on her vocal track Soulection - perfect way to end the night with a hip hop dance party Aphex Twin - because I was freezing and wet and a pussy so we went inside and hung with the rollers/trippers in the art installations Nick Murphy Odesza Thundercat Whoever the woman was that played in Tobacco's slot MNMYMS Welcome to Houston
The reservations for Bjork Digital start at 2:40, and yesterday they opened it up at 2:00. Each group is limited to 25 people and they start a new group ever 20 minutes. So if you get in line right away and you're one of the first 50 you're guaranteed to get in before the reservations start. Not sure how fast the line was moving after the reservation system started. We got in the 2:20 group and when we came out the line was massive.
Reviewing some more yesterday, was it me, or did Thundercat end 15 minutes before his set time? We showed up after Chelsea Wolfe went off stage, got to Thundercat for a song and a half, then he seemed to abruptly plug his and FlyLo's stuff then leave - I looked at my clock and it was 5:10ish.
We had a really tough decision to make with Aphex vs. RTJ vs. J.C. I had seen RTJ 3 years ago, so that quickly excluded them when up against two rare acts to me. Aphex Twin hasn't played U.S. in 7 years, but I feel like I have a higher probability of catching another Aphex Twin show in the future - John Carpenter is near 70 years old. Plus a legend from 70's/80's film, so seniority usually gets my respect in my mind. We stayed for all of J.C., and we were loving it, as did my girlfriend who is a huge horror fan. He played all his classics - including a cover of Ennio Morricone track from THE THING, my favorite horror film of all time.
After, we rushed outdoors to catch the last half of Aphex Twin. Apparently we had just missed the downpour - tons of people were in the exit pathway, soaking wet. I immediately thought this was perfect for us, because that meant a smaller crowd to fight through. When we got there, indeed it was much smaller than the massive amounts of people we saw earlier, midway through ODESZA. Rothric said earlier it was an intense onslaught - no joke, he was pummeling us with that sound, in the best way possible. Glad we were there to experience it.
After midnight, we went back inside, up to the 2nd floor for the first time. Arrived in time for the very intimate live electronic music/light show that was LIMB. Good size group of folks circling around this guy clearly doing what he loves on the knobs. Walked around to some other installs, TUNDRA's red lasers is trippy to watch, and all the way in the back corner, Jon Durst's "Axelrad" was a chill space to unwind after a long, eventful day.
Let's do it again.

The dude playing the drums was actually Tobacco, if I'm not mistaken. Think he had a mic taped under his mask, a la Lightning Bolt, for the vocals.
Pretty sure the woman on the synths was in Black Moth Super Rainbow, seen her play with Tobacco before.
Tobacco was good, but honestly, without the visual aesthetic that his fucked up videos bring, it was missing a little something.
I'm still trying to fully process that Aphex Twin set. Shit was wild.
The best part about Aphex was the crowd. Every time you looked back in the crowd, all you could see were smiling faces. Everyone was exactly where they were supposed to be in the moment in time.

Consequence of Sound posted a link to the full Aphex Twin audio like dickholes and of course it crashed it. If anyone has a download they can share, would love to hear what I missed out on

This festival is fucking lovely, BUT - it is definitely BS that it is proving to be so difficult to experience one of the main attractions they advertised (the Bjork VR). I really want to see it. But I'm not wasting half my day standing in that standby line, and the registration didn't work for me when I tried on the computer beforehand.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

the snaps/pics from this fest have made it the first fest I've been truly jealous of [that doesn't have LCD soundsystem] in a couple years.
its a gem of a festival. I couldn't stop raving about it last year and I'm so bummed to not be there this year. If it's doable, you should hands down go. The art installations are insane & the whole vibe of the fest is awesome. Because of the type of bookings they make it really gives the festival a unique vibe unlike other feats. I soooooo wish I were there.
Lightning Bolt, Liars, Sophie, Squarepusher, Anklepants, and Arca were all fucking incredible today.
Kamasi was late so I skipped it. Travis Scott was late so I skipped it. Butthole Surfers sounded fucking TERRIBLE so I left after 2 songs. Matmos literally played music out of a washing machine. Bjork DJ set was quite terrible, and no one could see her. I genuinely feel bad for Bjork fans who came to this fest. Arca fucking slayed that shit for 2hrs straight, had the whole inforoo crew dancing the entire time.

Was Sophie better at III Points or this? also, that's a real bummer about butthole surfers and Bjork. Though, did you get to do the VR? Because, I only heard great things about that part. And, finally, was Arca's live show like his recorded work?

Did Liars play any new material? I loved Mess and have been waiting to hear about a follow up for a while now.
Sophie was way better at III Points. I didn't get to the VR. Arca's set was a DJ set.
Ok, bummer that it was so difficult for everyone to do the VR. What I meant with the question about Arca was more about the style. Like, was it the same kind of electronic music or was it different? Did he stick to one genre or kinda hop around (as I've read Aphex Twin did the night before.)
Had a shit ton of fun this weekend. Last night Roth, Jones, lady de Jones, Tristan & his crew, and I danced pretty non stop for the last four hours of the evening. We met up w Phi for Arca to close out the night, and that set was incredible.
Will write more in depth thoughts when I get home. But overall, two enthusiastic thumbs up for this weekend.
