God do I love Hiss Golden Messenger. Has to be one of my favorites from last year. Can't wait to see him.
Bummed I missed his last Newport set hoping if (when) they bring him back there aren't any bad conflicts.
For anyone interested, check out this tape of his NYC show a couple months ago. They brought up the guitarist Josh Kauffman for their encore and I highly recommend listening to those two songs. Josh's solos are nuts, especially the one on "Brother, Do You Know the Road?"
I thought he(Hiss Golden) was a pretty sure thing this year?
They were just announced for Boston calling, if that matters
There are usually a couple of artists that crossover. I'd put my money on HGM, Whitney, and Lucy Dacus all pulling double duty. Strand of Oaks is a possibility too.
EDIT: Just for reference, there was no crossover last year mostly because BC didn't have much that would, 2015 had Jason Isbell, The Lone Bellow, and the Ballroom Thieves, and 2014 had Jenny Lewis and Kurt Vile

I was talking to MC Taylor after their Toronto gig in November, and I mentioned that I first saw them in Newport and he told me something like "As long as nothing weird happens, we'll be back this year." It wasn't a definite "YES!", but it was very close.
Makes sense, because Monsters of Folk will already be there for headlining purposes. So M. Ward can pull double duty
MoF , I'm really feeling it this year.
I feel like it's inevitable simply because of how much Jim James and Conor (and I assume M. Ward) seem to like Newport Folk fest. I know Jim was part of the artist curators group thing a few years ago. It also seems like one of those "Holy shit! That's a good/rare get!" for the fest like with Middle Brother or Roger Waters backed by MMJ.
Plus Jim can do a solo set and M. Ward can do a She & Him set. Conor could also play, since he's got a new album out but not sure they'd have all 3 do solo sets. Either way....I could see it happening. Even if not this year, they will play NFF eventually.
Willie Nelson has a new album coming out in April. If our top line isn't Neil Young/Cat Stevens - Fleet Foxes - Monsters of Folk, Willie would substitute nicely for any of those

Fleet Foxes would be nice. Monsters of Folk will happen one day. I do think they'll also get Cat Stevens soon. He's so perfect for it and the fact he's been playing some shows makes me optimistic. I would love to see him live.

As of today, this is very well in the cards for me. How difficult is it to get tickets via the resale? Where are my odds on this? When is the line-up announced?

You can find tickets resale, but I've never had to go that route for NFF so I can't give specifics on prices and whatnot. The lineup is rolled out over time, usually 2-3 per week for a couple months.

To add to what LD said, usually a few tickets pop up within this group as time goes on, but the demand is definitely higher than the supply.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Isn't there always overlap with Forecastle? For once, no headliners are positioned for both. But the following are (discard the artists that have played NFF a few years in a row now):
Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats Conor Oberst Needtobreathe Charles Bradley Judah & the Lion Waka Flocka Flame Twin Limb Rayland Baxter JD McPherson John Moreland Lucy Dacus Mandolin Orange Aaron Lee Tasjan Adia Victoria The Shelters Big Thief Ages and Ages Quiet Hollers

I'd love to see all of these at one destination. How did Waka Flocka make the possible crossover list?
Edit: Adia put out a scathing letter to the Americana Music Association a while back.

Waka Flocka was the missingno I put into the list as a joke.
Edit: I wonder Adia's take on Newport Folk Fest. On one hand, I've thought since the hiring of Jay that the festival has been diverse and hasn't pandered to the "white south" to which she claims the AMA markets. On the other hand, it's not my position to say anything on the manner as I can't directly relate to her concerns.

Conor Oberst just announced a new solo album (songs from Ruminations recorded w/ full band + more) that has a guest list that basically reads like a Newport lineup. Playing Brooklyn and Boston July 20 and 21. He's a lock, right? At least in some form (*cough* Monsters of Folk)
Partial guest list: Felice Brothers as backing band (for tour too) w/ Jim Keltner on drums Jim James M. Ward Gillian Welch Blake Mills Jonathan Wilson

Very happy to hear this. Definitely think he could be back at NFF in one form or another. Happy about Felice Brothers being included. They just had to cancel a big European tour which is usually pretty popular over there. Something to do with an illness to the lead singer, Ian. Hopefully they'll be all ready to go by the time the tour begins.
I've always loved the Felice-backed Conor shows I've been to. He seems to have a good time with them.
