Year made already! I'll get to see two of my biggest bucket list acts this year: Bon Iver at Boston Calling and Fleet Foxes at Newport. Doing a little dance this morning!
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
'13 Bonnaroo, Mountain Jam, Boston Calling '14 Mountain Jam, Boston Calling '15 Bonnaroo, Mountain Jam, Gathering of the Vibes, Boston Calling '16 Mountain Jam, Firefly, Newport Folk Fest '17 Mountain Jam, Newport Folk Fest, Boston Calling '18 Mountain Jam, Newport Folk Fest '19 Newport Folk Fest '22 Newport Folk Fest
(Actually, just noticed, our boss opened her monthly newsletter with: Rabbit. Rabbit. I thought they were both typos for Reel Big Fish, which would make even less sense)

I only just saw the announcement and expected this thread to be burned to the ground already. This is just behind Waters and Jack White in terms of enormous gets of this festival the last 6 or 7 years.

It was just a little more expected than those two. Still very, very excited. Newport's earned a free pass for announcements for the next couple weeks

Really the biggest deal about it is that it's their first American show of their return.
Fleet Foxes is not a huge name like a Roger Waters or a Jack White. Music people like Fleet Foxes, but most of your friends that don't go to shows every month probably haven't heard of them.
I think they might be the sub HL on Friday. If they headline, they went big one of the other days.

Most articles are claiming they are headlining on Friday, but I don't really know if that is true.

I agree that Waters and Jack White are way above Fleet Foxes. I'd also put Beck and Ryan Adams above them as well, mainly because both were out of left field at the time of their announcement (Ryan Adams was known for hating music festivals; Beck wasn't really touring or playing festivals, and didn't have an album announced, at the time he popped up on the lineup). That said, Fleet Foxes already has me trying to figure out how I could make this festival work this summer! I do think they'll be a headliner; they're definitely a bigger get than Flight of the Conchords. And with the way Newport books, you know there will be several other high caliber acts on the same day.

I may have completely forgotten about Conchords last year
I don't see them as HL. Now I am likely the old man here. I love the band, have tix, and am excited. But mentioned the booking today to HS students, and teachers in their 20's, and out 12, got maybe 3 OK's. But this a NFF get, and that's who this is for. I loved Patti Smith last year -- I saw her in her earliest days at CBGB's -- and was surprised at how many people left the Fort before she hit the stage. So maybe a little shakeup?
Speaking of CBGB's...how about David Byrne? Or the rumored Talking Heads reunion?

I'm fairly certain they'll headline, but if Newport wants to give us Cat Stevens or Paul Simon on Friday you will not hear a single complaint out of me! And to be fair, HS students can't really be expected to know a band who put out their last album 6 years ago.
David Byrne would be cool. I'm never getting my hopes up for a Talking Heads reunion and no way it'd happen at Newport. That has Coachella written all over it or else it'd be a one-off show at MSG or something.
On a FF-related note, does anyone think there's a chance FJM is back again? I hadn't really considered it, but I guess with the new album and a full band it's not 100% out of the question.

~~~So Bingo is officially underway!~~~ I'll be keeping track of all the cards, and will post if someone gets a full line before the lineup is finished. If no one gets a line, the winner will be whoever has the most artists guessed correctly on the card. Before the fest, of course.
So far andyd17 , Strawman , and myself are in the lead with 2/7 spots. Wow! So close to victory! I sure hope I win that beer!
In regards to the headliner/non-headliner debate. Fleet Foxes should definitely be a headliner. Comparing them to the rare gets like Patti Smith, Roger Waters, and Jack White isn't really fair. I think people are forgetting that we've also had recent headliners of Alabama Shakes, The Decemberists, and The Avett Brothers. Fleet Foxes are certainly on the same level as those bands. They are not the "legacy" act this year... I would still have my money on Cat Stevens or Crosby, Stills, and Nash.
As far as Father John Misty goes... I'm super excited for that new album. Already got the color changing t-shirt of the album cover and now that I've heard and loved a few songs, I'll be ordering the album on vinyl tomorrow. I know that Robin and Josh haven't talked since Josh left Fleet Foxes per an interview one of them did last year (I think Robin). I don't know if that's just because of schedules or if there is animosity between the two of them, but Josh used to date Robin's sister so who knows how that ended. There could be a rift there that would keep Josh away from the fort this year.
On a side note, thank God Newport doesn't pick sides in feuds and we get to experience performances from both sides of every folk argument: FJM/Ryan Adams: Taylor Swift covers Ryan Adams/Taylor Goldsmith: Mandy Moore Robin Pecknold/Josh Tillman: Whatever their rift is... (This could be an interesting discussion if anybody knows of anymore)
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
I've never heard anything about that. I've always been curious what they thought of each other because they, along with John McCauley, are my favorite modern musicians.
Yea, I wouldn't expect high schoolers to know much about Fleet Foxes. Even people in their early 20s. I would say Fleet Foxes appeal most to individuals in their late 20s-40s. Basically, anyone who was jamming out to the indie folk revival at the beginning in the 'aughts. Bon Iver is similar, but always had a little more commercial appeal than the Foxes.
