Not sure if i remember this right but i think you tried listening to stokes music before and didn't like it when he was suggested in a previous year. Just might not be your bag
I think jumpinjamesbrown might be right, but if you want to give them another shot I recommend either of their live albums, Gut the Van and All Points Bulletin, with a bit of preference towards the latter.
dispatch is interesting because you can tell which member wrote a given song just from the quality and lyrical content
Chad Stokes is the man. I wish his other band State Radio would reunite.
With you on this. Got to see State Radio at Lupos quite some time back. Think that was the night I decided buying bracelets I would rarely ever wear from places I traveled was dumb and started my music hoodie collection. Best move made! Sporting One-Big-Holiday tonight and remembering how awesome it was to watch the superbowl with my arse planted in the sand. Hoping you are having a blast bonzai.
So I seen Arlo Guthrie is playing in Woonsocket on July 29th.
Anyone think he could show?
I've thought about both Arlo and Joan Baez for several years, especially after the passing of Pete Seeger, which I think deserved a bigger musical moment. There is still a nod to those who gave traditional folk music a voice in the 60's and 70's, and they tend to be sprinkled in a few a year -- such as Rambling Jack Elliot and even Kris Kristofferson -- but I for one would like to see more. We do need to remember that Jay Sweet saved NFF by creating an exciting mosaic of newer performers, so it would seem there's a bit of a limit to the old guard. But if you are hoping for Arlo, note that he travels with family and they take their time in one region of the country rather than jumping from place to place, so schedule-wise it would seem to work if he is already in the Northeast.
And I do remember Graham Nash saying see you next year. Was that a wish or something more?

I'm guessing he probably wasn't booked to play at that point, but there's definitely the chance he was after that. Neil Young and David Crosby have both recently made comments about considering a CSNY reunion. Not to get hopes up, especially since it's likely headliners had already been booked, but that would be a pretty cool one.
As for older artists, Joan Baez or Arlo would be great. Also: Loretta Lynn, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Paxton, Lucinda Williams, Art Garfunkel, Robbie Robertson, John Fogerty, Bob Weir, Willie Nelson
This band might as well just be Houndmouth. They sound exactly the same.
Been quietly and anonymously reading the Newport threads on here for the past couple years, but figured I might as well bite the bullet and join in the fun. Mostly inspired to join here to say I disagree with you, thevagabond (wonderful first impression, I know...). I feel like a "they sound exactly the same" comment is fitting if you've only listened to "Masterpiece" from Big Thief. But perhaps we just see commonalities in music differently. I remember your comment from last year that Wild Child is a Head and the Heart ripoff and I would certainly have to disagree with you on that one too.
I'm not a huge fan of Big Theif, Houndmouth, Head and the Heart, or Wild Child–I appreciate their stuff and have enjoyed catching bits of each band live at festivals/other shows over the past few years–but I would say these claims of bands being a ripoff or sounding just like one another is pretty devaluing to the bands/ignorant.
I'll add though that I suppose this argument is somewhat moot now that Katie is no longer in Houndmouth. I'd imagine their sound is changing considerably as a result.

Welcome fishandbird. Glad you have you, even more glad you remember my Head and the Heart and Wild Child comparison, which I still strongly stand by. They are a straight up rip-off and I will defend that until I die, having seen full live sets from both bands multiple times. While, yes, this may be devaluing the band and I try my best to support every band I can because it's quacking hard to be in a band and travel and make no money, I will call out when I hear and see something that it blatantly the same as another established, fairly popular thing.
With regards to Big Thief, I did only listen to Masterpiece. Any other recommendations by them?

Haha I still disagree on the Head and the Heart/Wild Child, but fair enough.
I'm sure others could give more personalized recommendations on Big Thief, but some songs of theirs I enjoy most after listening through their album a few times are "Lorraine", "Vegas", and "Paul". I'd say give their whole album a listen through though. All-in-all, solid songwriting.
I'll also add to check out Adrianne and Buck's album "A-Sides" from before they formed Big Theif. "Jonathan", "Kerina", and "Indiana" are all tracks I'm partial to.

Oh you just meant the song Masterpiece. I came to that conclusion after hearing the whole album.

Yeah–miscommunication there. As far as I'm aware, not too much more of theirs to listen to beyond that album, unless you get into the Adrianne and Buck's duo stuff or Adrianne's solo stuff.

The difference to me is that Big Thief don't sing dumb cheesy roots rock songs
On a different note, here are some potential artists whose names I don't think I've seen tossed out:
Natalie Prass (just announced opening dates for Whitney, seems about time she plays Newport) Chicano Batman Josh Ritter Kevin Morby Elektric Voodoo (new project from Grace Potter & the Nocturnals' Scott Tournet, arguably better than anything GPN ever did) Lissie Waxahatchee
Anyone going to the parlor room for lady lamb tonight?
I went last night. Good stuff. She takes requests so it's a good chance to hear a rarity or obscurity. Right at the top she said "here are the songs I CANT do solo acoustic: ......" but anything else was fair game.
'13 Bonnaroo, Mountain Jam, Boston Calling '14 Mountain Jam, Boston Calling '15 Bonnaroo, Mountain Jam, Gathering of the Vibes, Boston Calling '16 Mountain Jam, Firefly, Newport Folk Fest '17 Mountain Jam, Newport Folk Fest, Boston Calling '18 Mountain Jam, Newport Folk Fest '19 Newport Folk Fest '22 Newport Folk Fest
Great stuff the parlor is super small so it won't be a screaming match to get her to hear anyone
is she playing solo acoustic the whole tour? I'm seeing her Friday in boston for the third time. Super excited!
Yeah none of it's with the band. Most of the tour is a living room tour. If you haven't listen to her new EP, which is also solo acoustic, I highly recommend it.
I don't quite "get"Big Thief. But every festival and concert hall has to fill their shows with what I consider "a working band" that can be replaced by a dozen others. Don't see the connect with Houndmouth, though, which I thought a band with potential that lost me with the popcorn Sedona. Between that scream sing chorus and the lost of Katie, I've lost all interest.
NOW -- highly recommend Clearwater Hudson River Revival this year...Pete's true love. There are always tickets, and while never a Roger Waters, hard to knock this year's Lake Street Dive, Arlo, Joan Osborne, The Barr Brothers, Los Lobos, Josh Ritter, and Holly Near.
lurker around these parts for the last few weeks but figured it was time to jump in the pool. first nff for me this july, very excited.
Jason Isbell dropped a "stay tuned" video for his new record today.
Seeing as he's played the fort before, hoping this makes him a likely possibility. Have seen him and the boys half a dozen time, every one better than the last, looking forward to the new record.
And while we're out it, why not go for a DBT reunion set. american band is certainly one of my top 5 of the last year.
