If our headliners are Fleet Foxes, Paul Simon, and MMJ/MoF...
I'm still not sold on Foxes being a headliner. It's possible , but I wouldn't be surprised if not.
I'm kind of with you, although I'd argue it's even less likely that John Prine is and you'd think we'd have at least one headliner at this point. Unless Jay wants to do some "don't announce the headliners" thing

The only thing I can argue for Prine is that it's " with friends " that sounds headliner worthy.
But yeah, I agree that we might have one at this point already.

I truly believe that FF are headliners. When announced, was their first American show in years, new album, tons of hype, etc. People will be traveling very far for this show.
Yet, I also thought that Ray LaMontagne was going to be a headliner last year and he was also the first artist announced in 2016.

Yeah but the "it's been a while " argument can be tough. Because we had Middle Brother last year, and they surely were not gonna headline.

I don't think those two are a very fair comparison
I don't think Prine and Friends is the Sunday HL, unless it's some really big friends. Wilco I'm not confident about, but the schedule seems to fit them.

Don't get me wrong, i think John Prine is God's gift to folk music but I'm thinking he's not the Sunday headliner, although he did headline in 2010. Again, different times. Though, I think I speak for many but I also didn't think Flight of the Conchords would be a headliner last summer.

I'd say that is the dream headliners but in reality, knowing Jay, I'm thinking: Fleet Foxes - Bob Weir & The Campfire Band - John Prine & Friends
If Prine was billed as "John Prine & Friends" I'd be more confident in him headlining, but we only know about the guests because he mentioned it. Newport just has it as "John Prine"
Also I don't think Weir's a headliner and he'll probably be on Friday so he can play with the Alone & Together guys

you are out of your damn mind if you dont think that any act that features bob weir is not a headliner.
you would have every deadhead in new england scooping up secondary market tickets, people would lose their shit over a booking with him.

totally agree and i'm thinking "alone & together" will most likely stay longer than one day. I see Weir Saturday, especially if THATH and Fleet Foxes close out the day on the fort stage

Well if that's the case I kind of hope they don't book him. Would love to see him but that seems like it would be a fairly underwhelming headlining set for Newport standards.

Agreed. He should not be a headliner. I mean Robert Hunter was not a headliner either...

Robert Hunter was a songwriter for the Dead, not a performer in the band. Weir is as much a national treasure as John Prine. He'd be certainly deserving of a headline spot if you tack on the campfire band and Joe Russo.

This ^^^
NFF as always is stacking up heavy and still we speak of bigger and better ... No doubt there is still an announcement to lose our shit over but just this ^^^^
Thinking yes. NFF hits it out of the park every year for most but you can't please them all, all of the time. Just find it amusing to read these amazing headliner musings. Sometimes the cards fall that way. Most years we get fantastic. Every now and then we get a 'Roger Waters' weekend..
If they got Dave, he's in all likelihood headlining
Is John a headliner? I really hope he is, but they still cooould have someone above him. Although since he's having guests join him, that's sounding like a perfect Sunday closer. Assuming FF are Friday's headliner and JP is Sunday, they could have some money left for a bigger Saturday headliner *cough*Paul Simon*cough*

Where do you think Jim James et. al fit into this? If MoF is a thing, would there be a chance they'd be a #2 and on before Paul Simon?

Have you even listened to stuff from the Bob Weir & the Campfire Band tour? It's phenomenal stuff - and far, far from underwhelming. Bob Weir is a national goddamn treasure.

I had not so I just went and checked some stuff out. Definitely better than I was expecting but still not something I think would make for an amazing headliner choice.
My current prediction though is that Friday is Fleet Foxes and Weir on the Fort with THatH closing the Quad, which would be a pretty good mirror to Sunday last year with Alabama Shakes, Elvis Costello, and Edward Sharpe respectively
We can finally settle the John Prine headlining debate. Newport just sent an email with the lineup, as is, and John Prine is places before the fleet foxes and its 100% in order of headlining to smaller acts. Looks like we have two headliners!

Well yeah, he is no doubt the biggest artist that they have announced so far. That is why he is 1st. But the lineup is also not done yet.
Maybe I'm missing the point. How does that email prove that those 2 artists are headlining?
It's more of an assumption than anything but if you follow the fleet foxes' touring schedule, they're playing some pretty large venues plus their return is very hyped. As for John Prine, you said it yourself, he's the largest artist yet. I'm totally cool with those as headliners, if they truly are.
