Only have been going for the past 4 years but I have to give it to Roger Waters with My Morning Jacket and Lucius. Seeing Roger do the Wall is something I hold in such a high regard but the intimacy exhibited in this gig along with the weather clearing as the chorus of "Wish You Were Here" rang out as I thought back on overcoming personal difficulties throughout that past year still brings joyous tears to my eyes. Long live Jay and long live Newport!
The Roger Waters set was amazing. 2015 was my first year. Before NFF I hadn't kept up with the music scene much. Now that I go there are so many more artists i love. I don't think we'll be given the Saturday headliner until late May. They seem to drop big names then. As for who it will be I've no idea. I would love to see Stevie Nicks. I'm mad I didn't go to see her in CT recently. Tom Petty is touring at the moment and in NY July 26th. But it may be someone completely unexpected. NFF is good like that. They're also good and getting surprise headline level acts we won't know about until the day. But I'm also looking forward to learning about some great new up and coming artists I've never heard of.

I love that roger waters is the near-consensus pick for best performance of the modern newport. that was truely something special and I'm glad we can all acknowledge that equally
The Ohana Music Festival in California is on Sept 8th to the 10th. It has Eddie Vedder and Glen Hansard as well as a bunch of other Newport alum. Dr Dog will be there. I know Eddie and Glen are touring in Europe in June. Newport could fit in if they're doing the US festival circuit between late July to September. Maybe wishful thinking. But I think I saw here that Eddie met George Wein at last year's Newport Jazz Fest and Glen had a fantastic set at last year's NFF.

Thought you wrote the Obama Music Festival. Thinking: man, talk about a mid-life career change.
It tried to auto correct to Obama while I was typing it. The weird thing is that right after posting that I read a quote my niece posted from Lilo and Stitch that Ohana means love. I'll take that as a sign. On a more serious note, I wanted to see if Chuck Berry every played Newport after reading about his passing today, and sure enough he played the Newport jazz festival in '58. I don't know if this link will post but it's in color and just underlines how both of the Newport festivals helped provide a stage for those who changed the music world for generations.
Watching the sun breakthrough the rain clouds with Mavis Staples singing a few feet away was very special. After seeing the Oh Hellos in the Quad I told my wife, "I have a new favorite band!" Such energy and showmanship. Less so last year on the Main Stage. The last Decemberists performance was not just a performance, but a show. I don't recall anyone bringing the crowd to its feet like Trombone Shorty, and ever since seeing Lake Street Dive at the Quad I am always looking at their schedule. And, of course, Roger Waters, but I was dragged away early by rain drenched family and friends....big mistake. But what also makes NFF special and memorable was seeing the Suffers in the family tent playing acoustic, and last year The Ballroom Thieves, although not playing any stage, captivating in the family. I was in love with Newport, and a little smitten with Calin Peters. Surprises every year.

He gonna roll VIP at Coachella and come out during Kendrick's set weekend one.
Although I thought Roger Waters was fantastic and I've seen countless other great sets at NFF my favorite was Elvis Costello. His version of sulphur to sugarcane with Preservation hall jazz band was incredible..
Wow. So many picked Roger Waters. Maybe we need to know people's top three favorite sets! Today I read that Keith Richards became a Chuck Berry fan after seeing a documentary with him playing at the 1958 Newport Jazz festival. Apparently the backing jazz band didn't like rock and wanted to stop it. Later Mick Jagger introduced himself to Keith after seeing he was carrying a Chuck Berry record. Bob Dylan got his career started at the Newport Folk Festival and was famously heckled when he went electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. It's kind of funny how the Newport Folk and Jazz fans tried to stop rock and roll but instead promoted it.
Probably Roger Waters was my favorite but there are so many that jump out. Hozier was amazing. I always love a Felice Brothers set. Nathaniel Rateliff, MMJ, Wilco and Beck all were great.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
Wish is was there the year Jack white played. There were many memorable performances in the few years I've been though. Edward Sharp was late starting in more ways than one last year but it became almost a religious experience near the end. Afterward NFF posted a picture of it asking "did that just happen?". Having my 10 year old kid on my shoulders when the sun came out for Roger Waters is a memory I hope my kid always remembers. During the Decemberists set I remember my kid saying he hoped they'd play the Mariners Revenge. Just then they played it with that giant whale prop. So much fun. John Baptiste playing Blackbird that year was great. Glen Hansard last year going Jimi Hendrix with his beat up acoustic guitar was jaw dropping. I love how fun and casual his set was. He'd stop in the middle of song to just tell a funny story he remembered and got that guy up on stage. It was like we were all just friends hanging out in his living room. I felt I was being ripped in two when Sufjan Stevens and Brandi Carlisle played at the same time. I did half of each but it hurt missing some of each. I look at old videos from years I wasn't there sometimes. Hozier in 2014 playing Work song and the Oh hellos encore in 2014 are the best I've seen. Freelance Whales Generator 1st Floor in the kids rent is up there though.

He was in the crowd by the second song! I missed the rest of the set for Alabama Shakes but it didn't take too long for that to become a party

Last year was my first year, so bear with me -- I'm only working with that.
I think for me, it was Julien Baker's set. Just unreal, goosebump-inducing. Ended up getting tickets for her NYC show on the car ride home.
But my other favorites from last year included: Rayland Baxter was also a lot of fun for an pre-noon set. St. Paul was just a blast -- super high-energy. ++ Phil Cook w/ the Blind Boys of Alabama.
Just checked his dates and he has Fuji Rock listed as 7/27, which means he's technically still open all of Newport weekend, he'd just have to come right back form Japan. He's obviously not booked right now, but I could see them squeezing him in on Sunday.

Yeah but many times bands place the 1st date of a festival as the date. Doesn't mean he is playing that date.

True. Also after checking the fest site it doesn't even start until the 28th, so must just be a mistake on his tour dates

The video NFF posted of her set was great. I wish I'd gone.
The first band I ever saw at Newport was Hurray for the Riff Raff and fell in love with them and the festival. That same year was the infamous Father John Misty performance and I left that feeling amazed and "did that just happen"! Dragged my friend back with me every year since. I was also incredibly moved by John Moreland's set and Christopher Paul Stelling's marriage proposal on stage. This is the place where magic happens.
