It kinda grosses me out that Newport would put on a tribute for a sexual predator. I don't care how "good" of a musician he was, you don't honor fucking scumbags.
I think it's wise to not be carried away with expectations about it but at the same time the guy changed the world. Baby boom kids grew up listening to him. His influence was huge. If the guys who made the recent songs with him and/or family are going to be there for this tribute then that'll be historic, amazing and more than enough. I'm very sad though because I'm reading it as he was going to be there but I'm honored we'll get to say goodbye.

I've got to read more about that. I got impression it was a made up charge by a very Jim Crow police force out to get him for being what they called being uppity.

He taped women in his restaurants changing, urinating, and deficating, for his own gratification. He got caught red handed with the recordings. He was a terrible person, regardless of how well he played guitar.

I grew up just down the road from ole Chuck...and yea he was known to be a scumbag. Used to host parties at his house for the kids in the area. My mom went to a few when she was younger. He would stand at the front door and not say anything as everyone came in. He was picking who he wanted later as everyone entered the party. There was also the camera above the ladies room stall business at the 'Southern Aire" restaurant he used to own in Wentzville.

I'm with you on one level. So would you also be grossed out if a festival put on a tribute for John Lennon? Bob Marley?
How about Beck's status as a lifelong member of the Church of Scientology?

That's pretty disturbing reading if true. I love John Lennon's music but I read he beat up his first wife and treated her awfully during and after their divorce. It's though to respect him after that. What can you say. I can't excuse it. The man had demons. Julian still loved him and sounds like Chuck's son loves his Dad. I'll still go and love the art, celebrate the joy it brought and change it brought. I'd hope he reflected while he served time. He paid his price. Henry Ford was anti semitic but people drive Fords.

You talking about what I said? It is true, you don't have to try hard to find other sources to confirm.
And I see what you are getting after. And I also see where Katy is coming from. And this is as a whole the mixed legacy we as humans end up with. Most of us a varying combo of horridly beautiful.
With all we interact with in this life can we handle the wretched aspects of those we interact with to take in the beauty they have as well. How do we square that is for each person a very real and personal thing. You will celebrate what he did professionally while others will remind us of who he was personally. Both valid and real.

Agreed. It's definitely a discussion worth having, and something that needs to be kept in mind while celebrating the life and legacy of many artists, but an artist doing terrible things doesn't negate the impact and/or quality of their work

They're not honoring him as a person; they're honoring him as a sick guitar player.

I see it as a honoring of him, in general, of his life and his music.
I guess I'm just really touchy after seeing so many tributes to him and how's he was such an amazing guy and I wanna puke thinking about the women he violated.

Yeah I had a similar feeling towards the wave of love for Michael Jackson after his death.

Okay Newport, seriously. Can the rest of the announcements just be littered with garbage. Joe The Singing Hobo, three hours of silence on the main stage, and Nickleback. Please. This lineup is too good already. The conflicts are already terrifying me.

I agree with King T - they're honoring him because of the profound impact he had on music. He was one of the forefathers of Rock and Roll, so that enough is a reason to give him a tribute. They aren't saying that he was an amazing individual or anything, at least from what I've seen.
But hey, if you don't want your ticket anymore, I'll be happy to take it off of you - someone who actually appreciates the music.
