I just don't understand why anyone would be defending Chuck Berry for what he did. I mean, you're right, he did horrible things. I think they are more trying to defend Newport for booking him. I think they must think that Newport is above any criticism. I mean, we know what Chuck Berry did for music, but that's completely outside of your point. It's just not something anyone should be fighting you on.
I agreed with his point actually. I'm not saying he's above it but I think it's important to separate an artist's work from their actions, you know?
It's also important to understand when someone states a personal opinion about how an artist makes them feel, that doesn't mean it's a judgement on the entire festival. I'm not boycotting Newport or asking them to cancel the show, merely stating my displeasure. He didn't seem to get that.
I'm guessing if they'd music forums in the 60s then Woodstock would've sucked. There must be a formula for how long it takes for folks to start fighting online. At least it seems to take longer for it happen on a Newport forum. That's a positive. In the few years I've been going I've seen zero fights or arguments so let's not here pleeeeeese.
I got in a verbal altercation (which was a mega fight in my mind) my first year, 2012, before they had dancing room at the main stage. I walked through the half empty lawn chairs to get to the front to see Charles Bradley and Trampled By Turtles, and there was probably like 30 people standing up front. Then some guy comes back to his seat and starts yelling at me that I'm blocking his view and that he'd been waiting all day to get that spot, even though the chair was empty when I got up there. He tried telling me he was security because he was wearing a previous year's volunteer shirt. He was an idiot, but still managed to rattle me, until the screaming eagle of soul soothed the pain away.
Hahaha that guy is famous at Newport for being a blanket/chair enforcer, and lying to people about being security/working for the fest. I straight told him to fuck off once, but as you heard earlier, I'm a nasty person so that shouldn't be a surprise.

Hahahahah Cowboy hat and dorky sunglasses? I've seen him there since. And yeah, you straight up frighten me.

I'll ply you with clam chowder and chocolate chip cookies, don't worry.

So relieved this has quieted. Like Beaker, had to stay away for real life today and come back to this! Thought I was going to have to send some 'folks to their rooms and change the wi-fi password!!
Now I know that Cats Ass is a good thing, have known for many years that Katy's chowda and chocolate chip cookies (the latter of which i don't care for 'normally') are out of this world, and peace has come back to this very special, Civilized, corner of the interwebz where we can disagree in a respectful manner.

I'm guessing this was shared before but checkout Newport Folk Fest 1963 to 1966. So cool. It cracks me up that the fans would sleep on anything. The beach. The motorcycle. Didn't matter.

Don't make me start singing "if i had a Hammer"!
Mom out.
I don't know who you are but I like you already!
She (and Mr. Fawn) are one of the reasons Newport Folk Fest is so amazing.

One of my favorite responses from a recent Dylan interview:
Q: For The New Basement Tapes, T Bone Burnett put together a group with Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens, Jim James, Marcus Mumford and Taylor Goldsmith, to finish songs based on old lyrics of yours. Did you hear any of those songs and say, “I don’t remember writing that?”
Listening to Pinegrove...these guys would be excellent at the fort!
This lineup is already stupid good, but Pinegrove is my biggest wish. Cardinal is already my most listened to album in iTunes and I've only had it for like 5 months. Gawd damn.
I really like the lineup so far. Friday is really strong. I like most of the artists. I know this will be controversial but I don't like Angel Olsen. I know people love her and her stock has grown but I didn't go when she played before and I won't this time either. I tried to like her. I really did. But that White Fire song was so freaking depressing.

Have you listened to her newest album yet? If not, I'd recommend it, even though you didn't like her before. If you didn't listened to the podcast, the guy who talked about her there was in the same boat as you, both not being a big fan and skipping her last Newport appearance but was blown away by the new record. It's also never quite as depressing as Burn Your Fire was.
If you've listened to it and still don't like her, that's fine. She's definitely not for everyone.
