I really like the lineup so far. Friday is really strong. I like most of the artists. I know this will be controversial but I don't like Angel Olsen. I know people love her and her stock has grown but I didn't go when she played before and I won't this time either. I tried to like her. I really did. But that White Fire song was so freaking depressing.
Have you listened to her newest album yet? If not, I'd recommend it, even though you didn't like her before. If you didn't listened to the podcast, the guy who talked about her there was in the same boat as you, both not being a big fan and skipping her last Newport appearance but was blown away by the new record. It's also never quite as depressing as Burn Your Fire was.
If you've listened to it and still don't like her, that's fine. She's definitely not for everyone.
I haven't checked out the album but I did check out one or two of her new songs online and liked the new direction more. I'm cool with Newport getting her again. I know a lot of people like her. It's also cool that Newport found her before her popularity grew. I think its just that my tastes leans more towards uplifting music. My kid (now 12 years old) and I check out every artist we don't know (or do know but don't known their new stuff) and if we like them we buy one of their albums. This year so far I bought Drive By Truckers and The Head And The Heart's new albums. In the last few years the albums are got included: Son Little, Sturgill Simpson, Barr Brothers, Lord Huron, First Aid Kid and Brandi Carlisle. We got Sufjan Stevens and Iron and Wine on Vinyl. Their music seemed worthy of an even classier format. Edit: my son has made me buy him the following - 2015 - Courtney Barnett 2016 - Lady Lamb 2017 - Margaret Glaspy He likes the rock gals I guess.
Can they please announce some other days? I mean I like them reassuring me that Friday will have some sets I don't care about, but I'd also like to know who else I can get excited about on Saturday and Sunday!
I'm guessing if they'd music forums in the 60s then Woodstock would've sucked. There must be a formula for how long it takes for folks to start fighting online. At least it seems to take longer for it happen on a Newport forum. That's a positive. In the few years I've been going I've seen zero fights or arguments so let's not here pleeeeeese.
I got in a verbal altercation (which was a mega fight in my mind) my first year, 2012, before they had dancing room at the main stage. I walked through the half empty lawn chairs to get to the front to see Charles Bradley and Trampled By Turtles, and there was probably like 30 people standing up front. Then some guy comes back to his seat and starts yelling at me that I'm blocking his view and that he'd been waiting all day to get that spot, even though the chair was empty when I got up there. He tried telling me he was security because he was wearing a previous year's volunteer shirt. He was an idiot, but still managed to rattle me, until the screaming eagle of soul soothed the pain away.
Now that I've joined the "going to a concert is a check on the bucket list" generation, I'm not sure who's worse: the crazy kids at, say, Warped Tour, or the old timers of my generation who think carpeting the Fort with blankets and high backed chairs is a birthright. That's why I sometimes cringe at the thought of "A" list performers at Newport. The second hand market will go nuts, and someone will return looking for you after that slight in 2012. Now stay away from my chair, will ya?
Based on Joshua Hedley's Instagram post "likes" for his Folk Fest announcement, I think we can assume Fritz, Margo Price, and Jason Isbell will all show up.

Well Margo actually commented that she will be there.

Didn't see that but extremely excited. This year is shaping up to be beautiful.

Yeah I'm expecting Isbell to be around all weekend, but not play an actual set. No way he and Amanda don't come out during Prine's set.

He played with the Drive By Truckers recently so that doors open again.
Congrats on beating Beaker, a feat most of us have given up on.
Also, pumped about Kiwanuka. I was bummed when he cancelled his tour in December, then the make up show was the day I'm driving home from Boston Calling. This will make up for it! His set in 2013(?) was fantastic!

I'm normally on my way to work at 9, but I'm going in an hour late today so I made sure I was quick on the trigger
