3) After the sun and heat last year, considering one of those popup open tents things...but read here that they may be banned this year. Any word on that?
They're not going for an all out ban as the fest info states, "Tents, umbrellas and shade structures over 30” are prohibited in lawn seating areas." The fest provides a few shade structures but not nearly enough. They were a lot more directive on where you could put them last year and I think this year they may reserve an area back against the fence for people who want to put them up. At least that's my gut. Our crew will need to get there early enough to reserve a decent spot and we welcome any Roosters to come share Quack Club shade structures. We're pretty easy to spot.
Thanks for the heads up. I guess that includes the back fence for the Quad and the Fort. I sometimes spend a little time in the larger tent by the dock to get a cooling breeze, but run around so much never thought about a tent until last year's burner. Actually, thought of saying hello last year, but I could only guess which section the Roosters were in, am terrible with names, and felt "7th grade shy" about asking. That's probably why one year I stood in line for a movie for an hour before I realized it was the wrong line.
And I still think Joan Baez should be there the year she is inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame.
I do not get Pinegrove. Can someone please explain them to me? Strawman please refrain from your dickhead, holier than thou, quack all y'all comments.
Since you asked!
I literally just got home from seeing them. I really like them but I can totally get not being into it. They're a band I've found hard to place stylistically, but there's definitely a whiny, emo quality to the songwriting and the singer's voice that I could see being off-putting to some people. I also think that's where the appeal is for me at least; they're angsty but the music and lyrics feel more mature than other bands tackling the same topics. They're a band I personally don't think I could sell to someone who doesn't like them, because if it's their general sound you don't like that's the one thing that's most consistent across both of their albums. Do you have any specific things about them that turn you off?
Also I would encourage you check out this Paste session, but when it comes to Newport I'm guessing they'll be playing with the full band so this won't really help in that regard.

hmmm, i know its been skipped over for debates about pinegrove and beaker's realness ....but really love this announcement, a band I've always wanted to see, and great to add to them on high rotation in my headphones these past two days
i know i way too late on the bingo card and he would surely not be a big announcement everyone wants right now, but what about a Fionn Regan appearance, loving his new stuff

great question, i've come to really like them, took a few listens, but can see why people don't get them, like his voice and lyrics and the beat of the faster songs, sort of reminds me of a lighter version of rural alberta advantage or even early clap your hands say yeah or even a less fuller sound version of typhoon... i'm intrigued about the newport fit
Sort of feel like by the time most bands become headliners it's to late but i also hate crowds so i constantly drift towards the irrelevant... also i'm going to be in ireland while the final acts are announced and will barely have internet access i'm going to freak out
I'm going to use your mention of Ireland to share a singer some folk here might not know but probably should. Luke Kelly was probably the greatest folk singer who ever lived. I used to have this misplaced notion that Irish folk music owed nothing to Newport until I read an article about how Luke Kelly got into folk music. While working in England he happened upon a club where folk singers performed. Turned out the club was a place where Pete and Peggy Seeger helped promote the folk revival in England. Luke befriended Pete and Peggy. When Luke returned to Ireland he helped form Ireland's greatest ever folk band The Dubliners. Their songs are played to this day in Irish bars all over the world. Years later Pete helped Luke launch his solo career by having him play at Newport.
The dubliners are excellent my uncle and cousin cover them a lot

Thank you. This reflects most of what i feel. It's mostly the voice that gets me, although most bands that I start out not liking due to the voices (fleet foxes, dylan) i tend to get over fairly quickly and end up greatly enjoying.

Can't help but think Suzanne Vega augers some grittier names. Btw -- she reminds me of all the nights wasted in Tom's Diner when I was supposed to be studying. So a little break with the mold:
David Byrne (or Blondie) The New Pornographers Conor Oberst Andra Day Joan Osborne Sings Songs of Dylan Joan Baez Bob Weir
And for good measure, Bruce Springstein joins John Prine on stage and I will miss it.

And Bobby, Joan and the Avetts do Sugaree into Not Fade Away together to close out Saturday.
Joan Osborne that is (she toured with The Dead and does one of my favorite Sugarees).
Moten 33: "And Bobby, Joan and the Avetts do Sugaree into Not Fade Away together to close out Saturday. Joan Osborne that is (she toured with The Dead and does one of my favorite Sugarees)."
Had to do a double-ytake after another time I wrote about "The Wild Weeds." At first I thought you meant "Bobby, Joan and the Jets, " or "Benny and the Jets," or "Benny and the Avetts." Eye doctor Monday.
Easy to forget the eclectic background that has taken Joan Osborne through Motown and The Dead, and now with her Dylan trio -- and she is in the area -- seems like an interesting booking or guest performer at some point.
This has some potential for sure, considering the roots factor, and the artists that are in it.
This looks amazing!
Three or four years ago this film was "teased" at Square Space. I still have two buttons with "American Epic" they gave out. In fact, Robert Redford also involved. Would be interesting to have it running somewhere. (sorry about the reprint...tried to reduce the size of the poster) EDIT: OK -- really confused. Is American Epic (slated for a 2016 opening) the same as Sessions (now scheduled for May 2017 release?)

Yes, basically the same thing. Technically American Epic is a documentary and American Epic Sessions is a followup with in-studio performances from all those artists. But it's all the same thing that was supposed to premier a while ago, it just ended up getting pushed back.
I could definitely see Newport doing something with it but who knows
