FJM is one of my favorite musicians. I really hope he makes it back just to do a song for the Speak Out set. A few songs from Pure Comedy would fit in really well.
Any other thoughts for that set? I think First Aid Kit has already been mentioned to possibly play "You Are the Problem Here". Also, since Jay began talking about that set on the podcast by mentioning Spirit Family Reunion saying, "It's time to make Newport dangerous again" (Or something along those lines), I could definitely see them playing "Goin' Out to Cannon Ball". Lastly, Conor Oberst has some songs that would fit that bill... "Road to Joy" immediately comes to mind.
I don't know. It's a haul to get there from Japan. Although I wouldn't put it past him with the political motivation not to mention to motivation to try upstage Fleet Foxes.

I don't know if that level of animosity is still there. He said on Twitter that the new Fleet Foxes song made him cry; he also said he'd be at Newport, then again he could have just been trolling in both cases. You never know with him.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

This does not seem like a human being that holds a grudge for something as silly as not being in the Fleet Foxes anymore. This guy has much much much more important things to focus his time and energy towards. He's teaming up with Jay to save the world. Scoopz city over here. Don't tell anyone.

I agree with Katy. I have literally no idea what you're talking about with FJM. I thought he was great last year and he's been fantastic every time I've seen him. And I've never seen him whine. Who are some other whiners you guys would name? "Folk" music has a lot of people up there whining that people in this thread love but cause me to gag.

Words I would use to describe FJM: Pontificating, Opinionated, Witty, Brilliant, Pretentious, Divisive, Antagonistic. Words I would not use to describe FJM: Whiny, Depressed.
Everybody has their own views on things though. I wouldn't want to get into politics on here but I would think where your views fall politically could also have an impact on your feelings for FJM... especially in the last couple of years.

"You look like you're listening to every note." - Lady to me during LCD's "final" show 2023: Mar 29 - Guster Apr 6 - Postmodern Jukebox Apr 26 - Father John Misty May 14 - Taylor Swift (Philly) May 17 - Robert Plant and Alison Krauss July 12 - moe. July 16 - CAKE (Portland, ME) July 28-30 - Newport Folk (#12!) Dec 8-9 - Goosemas!
I know I posted this before, but FJM said he wasn't sure if he should vote between songs last year. I promptly left his set to see Patty Smith quote Woody Guthrie "This Machine Kills Fascists" and tear out her guitar strings. He just seems like a twenty year old guy who thinks he 'gets' everything better than everyone else (which was me and most other white liberal arts guys in their early twenties.)
A whole different topic... The world is weird right now. We are in the midst of a destruction of the oldest living democracy and I can't help feeling like we have slipped into it being acceptable... like we have all read so many dystopian novels or seen so many end of the world movies that we are just shrugging and saying to ourselves: 'kind of figured it was coming.'
Jay just said on Paste Magazine Live that last year 15-20% of the artists weren’t announced. This year is “a little more than that unannounced”…
Also mentioned "64 or so artists". We're at 53 "sets". Not exactly sure how he breaks down the numbers, but that is a thing I heard and am doing nothing with the information for which I am rambling on about.
"Told you 158 times I can't stand little notes on my pillow. "We're all out of cornflakes. F.U." Took me three hours to figure out F.U. was Felix Ungar!"
How out of touch am I? Took me more than that to figure out FJM. The vernacular of folk escapes me. I'm 100 years old and know RBF ("Sellout")...if I ever see that at Newport I'll know we have entered a new world.
So...Moved from 108 to 105 on Saturday's list. Can we get those in front of me fired? Btw -- any of youse bring guitars, ukes, percussion, and stuff for after show or does everyone go to Jane Pickens and Red Lobster? (yuk)

Anyone here watch Brooklyn 99? Comedy on fox that had a great reference to NFF. It's about a police station in Brooklyn and this scene is describing some of the employees being excited about a cop convention coming up and their dull boss makes the reference.
Jake: Here's what a-we are all about. One, free hotel rooms.
Terry: I get to sleep in a bed by myself. No wife, no kids, just Terry starfishing on a Cal King.
Jake: Two, a huge hall full of cool police tech.
Rosa: Last year, I got to try out a heat ray.
Jake: Three, the Buffalo P.D. always throws an insane party. Last year, Amy got so drunk, she jumped a police horse into the pool.
Amy: Eight-drink Amy is an equestrian, and she's real bad at it.
Captain Holt: This isn't an excuse for you to party. This is a police convention, not the Newport Folk Festival.

I'm guessing a lot of the unannounced stuff Jay was referring to could refer to the museum sets. But I also think Sunday will be featuring a mystery set on one of the main three.
Regarding Father John Misty and his set last year, first of all the attitude of "stop talking and play your songs" is a fairly demeaning way to view musicians and the purpose they serve and seems to be fairly antithetical to the whole Newport ethos in particular. Second, I don't know that I'd refer to him asking people to take a moment to feel the profound sadness of what had just happened (and has grown so much worse in the 10 months since) as being "whiny."
BUT, if it makes it any better, he's barely been talking at all during this tour. And his show tonight was fucking stunning.

Hit the nail on the head. Thank you thank you thank you.

If I recall correctly, he said something along the lines that he's not very political and doesn't really follow that kind of stuff all too much. And then proceeded to share is opinions on what was taking place.
That's when I rolled my eyes and went over to the main stage.
I'm not one who thinks musicians should just "shutup and play" but I will hold you to the same standard of any other person I interact with: If you preface what you say with the fact that you're not terribly informed on the topic, then I don't care to hear what you have to say on it. That goes for friends, celebrities, family, etc. Especially if Patti Smith is playing a few hundred feet away!
Anybody know when the DeerTick Blues cafe shows get announced?
Would like to know this as well -- seems like they sell out pretty quickly?
Newport Blues Cafe sells out literally in seconds. Tix went on sale near the end of May. Deer Tick announced their guests a couple of weeks before the festival. Other unannounced people show up sometimes.
Question for y'all as I work on a final mock for the schedule. In the podcast Jay said Sunday Groove would be the first set on the Fort. Are we assuming that Berklee Choir will still actually have that spot and Pres. Hall will be after them?

Pretty sure he was referring to his plans for next year and forward. He mentioned this year being the introduction to that.
