Question for y'all as I work on a final mock for the schedule. In the podcast Jay said Sunday Groove would be the first set on the Fort. Are we assuming that Berklee Choir will still actually have that spot and Pres. Hall will be after them?
Pretty sure he was referring to his plans for next year and forward. He mentioned this year being the introduction to that.
He mentioned "inaugural", not "introduction". Since this is labeled as a Sunday Groove, this would be the first one. I'm guessing he either means first "real" set (not that Berklee aren't real, but they're just always the opener), or Berklee will be moved to another stage.

Just listened to the Paste interview with Jay really great and insightful stuff, especially about the context of AEG and LiveNation. Strawman were you involved in that?

Serious question: how do people survive afterparties + 3 days of the festival?
I went to my first afterparty in my 5 years last year (Phil Cook) on Saturday night and while it might be my actual favorite Newport memory, I thought I was going to fall asleep all day on Sunday. Getting to the gates by 8am everyday, it just feels impossible.

Parking opens at 8am. But gates at 10am.
How is the Uber situation in Newport? I really want to go to an after-party but don't want to drive back to my Airbnb which is approx. 20 minutes from the Newport Blues Cafe.
Clearly I am the crazy one since it is just me, but honestly, I don't understand why everyone talks like surviving the late nights is some great task. Newport isn't exactly a high intensity festival compared to something like Bonnaroo. Stay extra hydrated all day, try to get some shade, and sit a little (or at least rail lean). Eat something before the latenight and dont drink too much.

I never made it last year because I just wasn't aware of them (although tried to go to the Wild Honey one w/ Rayland Baxter, but the rest of the crew was exhausted). Last year, it was just super hot -- we all crashed early pretty much all weekend + purchased hats the second day.

I would say don't count on it unless you have more money than you know what to do with. I checked lyft once last year just out of curiosity at the blues cafe and they were at like 500% surge pricing

If you want to go to an aftershow and have a drive, i suggest getting to an offsite parking lot pretty early and dropping your car there. You can bring your bike and bike to the ferry or just bike to the fort (that's what we do).
That said, we took uber last year and there was little to no surge at like 8 or 9pm.

Dude, welcome to my life. Last year, we were at the shows and my wife basically dragged me outta the blues cafe because her feet were killing her and she was basically the walking dead. I missed Jenny Lewis for that...and I'll never let her live that down.

Why do you need to get to the gates at 8am?
For a good spot, manbruhdoodhombre. Mostly my crew includes a few 60+ers so they are up early and in bed by 9. It's a big family affair, such as Newport should be.

Curious question to all -- who do you go to Newport with? Significant other? Your family? Small group of friends? Or huge crew?
Last year, we were a group of 6, so corralling everyone in the morning to get into the one rental car + then cooking each night at the Airbnb was pretty simple. Now, we've doubled, so I'm starting to process what it's like with a group of 12 at a music festival in terms of logistics.

The last couple years I've just gone with my dad, with my mom usually tagging along for a day. We've always just driven in from home every day which can be a bitch, but we manage. This year some other people might be tagging along; siblings, friends, not 100% confirmed yet. I also always end up meeting up with some other pals who go every year

We've had 25 in our Quack Club crew before. You need to talk with TLOML fawnmart because she's the only person I now that can pull off a crew that big. She cooks breakfast foods for everyone weeks in advance (it's a lot of bacon there). We have ez-ups in the back yard and cots/tents everywhere.

2014 - a friend and I 2015 - by myself 2016 - by myself 2017 - a friend and I
I have rather boring friends when it comes to music.
Last year we biked in and it was a lot of fun! Particularly the biking home after the last concert. You go in a huge pack and the police stop traffic for you. Everyone is in a very festive mood, singing songs, shouting "Patty F'ing Smith" and so on.
On second question have just been with my wife but am actively recruiting likeminded friends as well as my 10 year old daughter to come along. She has been grooving to Aaron Lee Tasjan, loves Chris Thile on Prairie Home Companion and introduced me to Dispatch recently... so, happy we are moving away from the Taylor Swift stage and eager to share Newport with her when she is ready.
On separate note... been listening to all the artists announced and really like Matt the Electrician. For a bottom of the lineup guy, I am really excited to see him. Wish Friday wasn't going to be such a challenge.

Wife every year, this is year 5 for us. She was not really a big folk fan but now its her (our) favorite weekend of the summer. We live in RI so we drive in every day, tried getting hotels in Newport every year and the prices are outta this world for 1-2 nights.
This will be my fifth NFF-- first year came by myself ever since with my best bud. We are one of those get to the fest early people. B&B is close by and we bring breakfast with us and hang out. I love sitting by the water and watching all the sail boats. Sometimes we're lucky to have a musician playing while everyone is waiting. It's so peaceful in the morning before everyone gets there.

My group has fluctuated between 4 and 10 over the years, slowly growing via word of mouth. My parents usually come only for sunday but they've been disappointed missing things like james taylor and Kris Kirstopherson the last few years so they went for Saturday this year.
Last year was my first year and I went with my mom and three cousins. This year will be the same, but my sister might come though she doesn't have a ticket yet.
First two years with wife; last two added sis and bro-in-law. They tend toward the traditional old Dylan, Gorka, Chrsitine Lavin, Levon Helm. Would love to bring my 20-something son, but he's always on the cusp, though he loves the Friday schedule. hoping a stop at the Pez Museum will be the topper. Would like to be part of a larger crew, but a little "shy that way."
