If not, then what can we possibly expect from that "solo" set?
He's been quoted as saying that he is only coming with a acoustic guitar this year.
I'm holding out hope for MoF set...probably very high hopes, but I'm ok with it.
This will be at least his third time at newport performing as Jim James/Yim Yames.
First time was either 2009 or 2010 with just him and a guitar playing mmj songs and i think some other folk tunes. second time was 2013 with a full, kickass electric backing band that he toured with behind regions of light and sounds of god.
i imagine this set will feature stuff like Golden, Steam Engine, Wonderful, and then probably some timely and appropriate covers
True story: I had seen MMJ 5 or 6 times before the Jim solo set in 2013 and was just a regular fan. It was that solo set that put me on the MMJ path that I am on now.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Oh , I'm by no means saying he will be there. I'm just saying that he should be included is options.
Wise words as always. When you get to see Jack White at a festival a fraction of the size of Coachella a year before he headlines Coachella, Roger Waters backed by MMJ and all the other amazing things Jay and co. have created over the last few years it's easy to get over excited.
The best tonic for me when I get overhyped (and I'm the guy who just put springsteen's name in the conversation so I can recognize when I'm overhyped) is to remember that across the board my favorite performances have been the tiny ones:
Christopher Paul Stelling, Lady Lamb, and Lucius in the harbor tent, Joe Pug in the family tent, Spirit Family in the alcoves, cloggers in the museum. They could have 0 names I've ever heard of and I imagine it would still be my favorite weekend of the year.

While it did have M. Ward sitting it (at times? full set? I don't know....wasn't there) I always remember the Solo set Jim had at Newport in 2008. It wasn't a full band thing and was just mainly him on acoustic guitar. I've gotten a lot of plays out of that recording because at the time it was the only real way to hear a lot of MMJ songs in a stripped down, acoustic version.
The quintessential Newport moment for me. I didn't have a clue who he was until that morning, when my wife said "I want to make sure we're there in time to see this guy."
Now I'm hoping to see him at least twice this year--got tickets to spirit of 67 and plan to catch him in the museum.

I can't count the amount of concerts i teared up at it's sort of pathetic.
Not pathetic. We're lucky enough to be in touch with our emotions and the emotions of other for it to have a great effect on us. It's pathetic when people can listen to a song and feel nothing.
One of my group of 4 will not be arriving until Saturday morning now. If anyone knows someone who interested in going on Friday and meeting up with us before hand to walk through using the extra ticket, direct message me and we can coordinate the details. Will also have an extra ticket for the Spirit of 67 show.

That's a great discussion! I'm curious what live music moments have choked others up. I can think of a few off the top of my head...
-When Jack White got choked up singing Goodnight Irene.
-The Irish guy jumping on stage and singing The Auld Triangle with Glen Hansard.
Outside of Newport...
-The Staves performing Sufjan Stevens' Chicago to celebrate the ending of their tour with Ben Howard, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Bear's Den... you could really tell they were a little family on that tour.
-The Lone Bellow performing at Newbury Comics to a room of like 20 about a week or so after the Boston Marathon attacks when Kanene started crying mid-song.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

I've never cried at a concert, but I was pretty close at the Atlanta stop of the Saint Pablo tour during Blood On the Leaves. Don't know why it was that song, but it's when I sort of stepped back and was able to admired the whole feeling of it all. Plus it had the best lighting.

The Lone Bellow at Webster Hall on the night of the Paris attacks is the one that comes to mind for me.

Julien Baker at Newport Bon Iver at Boston Calling - the rain and the music...I didn't stand a chance!

Yeah, the only one of my instances that I actually cried during was the Lone Bellow one... that was a lot to handle. The others just choked me up.

I just want to take a minute to be a full-on cheerleader for lyte.
I lived my whole life in the northeast and went to Newport for the first time in 2009. We returned in 2014 and have been every year since. This year we moved to the west coast which has been an adjustment to say the least, but I looked forward to returning to my favorite weekend of the year.
And then I forgot that my ten o clock wasn't the ten o clock the tickets went on sale and got sold out.
But thru diligent internetting and patience I managed to get Three Day Tickets for my wife and I, as well as single day tickets for both my dad and my brother for Friday and Saturday, all without paying scalper prices.
If Jay and co. really do lurk this thread: 10/10, please bring this back again next year.

I've seen Glen Hansard perform 20 times over the last 15 years (Frames, Swell Season, solo) in multiple venues and cities. Watching him perform a flawless set at Newport almost moved me to tears, especially during The Auld Triangle - a song I have always wanted to hear him sing. Standing front row at the perfect festival with a dead-silent, appreciative audience and my fiancee (now wife). It didn't get any better than that for me.

Julien Baker silencing the quad slayed me...and then my wife who had been searching for me rolled up from behind and said "WHAT IS THIS BORING MOM MUSIC IM OUT OF HERE" to each their own I guess!
I've teared up listening to the Avetts play "Murder in the City" every time I've seen them I think. The pull of Jim James is strong but it's gonna be tough to miss that moment with wife, Dad and Brother on hand.
Need the poster but I also need to finally get around to getting a Newport t-shirt and/or hat.
Also notable in that newsletter: Third Man will be bringing their recording booth and people can sign up to record in it
Quacker and I got to stop into TMR this spring finally. There was a group of young guys in there recording. They threw us out after 30 minutes with a 10% discount due to closing for unknown filming and recording in 'the booth'. We al-most, alllmost bought the Neil booth recording set. It was so tempting. The one that got away. It pleases my old lady self to know what the TMR recording booth is that you speak of and to be able to say i stood in it.
