Can someone message me with the unannounced? Thank you!
Also, this is the hubby and I's first Newport experience. It's been on the bucket list. We are HUGE Deer Tick fans and assumed they would make an appearance since they seem to every year. They aren't officially on the lineup, but thoughts from you more experienced folkers on if/when they might show? Thanks!! 😎🎶🎶

An inside source told me they WILL be joining at least one set. I was sworn to secrecy on which one though though...

From Bob Boilen's Newport preview:
"John Prine is a long-term influence and uniting force in the Newport music community. After a nearly fifty-year career, his music remains magnetic and compelling. Prine headlines on Sunday at Newport, and has invited friends and guests to join him for a special set entitled Speak Out, which celebrates the power of song to fight injustice. "Angel From Montgomery" is a 1971 classic covered many times by many voices."
Prine + friends involved with Speak Out, as well as his own set?
We didn't get TICKets to the aftershow. We really are amateurs😂. Good to hear about a possible tick performance. My best guess is CHUCK! But really.. we are just looking forward to the whole experience! Can't wait!

On the NPR All Songs podcast that just went up today Jay and Bob discuss the Jim James award which is an actual award that goes to the artist that appears in the most sets over the weekend. Similar to Bingo, was thinking it would be fun to lay odds on who is most likely to win in 2017.
Jim James 2:1 Steelism 4:1 Sara Watkins 3:1 Chris Thile 4:1 Justin Vernon 3:1 Rhiannon Giddens 5:1 Billy Bragg 5:1

I would chuck out as many sets as possible to be sure.

i've been so busy the last month that i haven't spent a ton of time checking out the schedule and crafting my day plan. I think this year i've got all my favorite bands "hearted" on the app and i think i'm just going to play it by ear and go with the flow and really just bop around and discover and enjoy it without worrying about rushing around.
But - I think I'm diving in cause the supsense is killing me. I love whitney and need to know.
can someone PM me the unannounced! (the speak out and a few other sets where I know there will be some cool pop ups I already have a "do not miss" --- so i just need to know if i'm going to have a killer conflict)
'13 Bonnaroo, Mountain Jam, Boston Calling '14 Mountain Jam, Boston Calling '15 Bonnaroo, Mountain Jam, Gathering of the Vibes, Boston Calling '16 Mountain Jam, Firefly, Newport Folk Fest '17 Mountain Jam, Newport Folk Fest, Boston Calling '18 Mountain Jam, Newport Folk Fest '19 Newport Folk Fest '22 Newport Folk Fest
why doesn't someone just post the unannounced with a spoiler?
I think that's too easy of an out for those with less will-power, like myself. Even if I didn't want to know it I think I would click on that.
EDIT: Plus signing more newbies up is always welcome. I lurked for probably a year and a half before I joined and I am so glad I did. This might get people to create an account, if not contribute to the conversation.

Another "Newbie" here. To the forum, not the festival (this will be our 5th year). I'm really curious about the unannounced, but have held off on asking so far.
The Friday forecast is freaking me out a little. I've never been on a year that had a really wet day. I'm not counting the rain during Roger Waters. I can't tell if we should expect just some bad showers or more of a constant rain. Hopefully the forecast will change for the better before Friday. What will the organizers do it's it bad?

From the website:
Events take place rain or shine. If severe weather becomes an issue and we need to interrupt programming, announcements will be made regarding safety procedures. Programming will resume when deemed safe.

The real danger is the thunderstorms and wind. If it was rain I'd be able to ride it out, but any sets getting cancelled on Friday would be a huge bummer.

I'm happy that I have 4 straight sets at the Quad on Friday and I'll be sheltered and then when I emerge for Fleet Foxes they can open with Sun It Rises to scare the clouds away for the rest of the day. Happy thoughts everybody!
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

For sure, Friday would be a real disappointment if anything was cancelled but you can't play around with lightning, especially in an enclosed area. Seems like most forecasts say rain after midnight, clearing out in the morning and then 50/50 until about 6 PM and then clearing out. Hopefully we'll get the good 50% or at least hold off from any storms. I'm not concerned about the rain.

I've seen a couple rainy days there and it generally isn't too bad. But if its 4 inches that could be something different. The chance of thunderstorms and wind are a bigger concern than the rain. Those would more likely delay sets.
The National Weather Service still has a note that the showers are more likely before 10am, so hopefully the worst part is over before the fest even starts.
Weather report keeps shifting. Now The Weather Channel has no rain on friday until a chance of showers late in the day, while the National weather Service still has rain and possible thunderstorms in and out throughout the day.
I'm sure it'll just keep switching around until we end up with a beautiful sunny day

Agreed! I'm liking this trend right now. Went from flood-like conditions to some rain.
