have not seen a forecast chg so frequently in quite some time. every 4 hours with the national WC updates. Friday still seems to be an unknown. The last 2 or 3 years we have had hell fire and brimstone kind of storms at least one night over Warren. The worst at NFF being the JJ summoned torrential rains and black skys. Years back before we we started going recall reading a press about how the whole fort had turned to mud, cars were stuck everywhere, you couldn't walk without shoes getting sucked into the mud. Grateful we have not experienced that.
Strawman you should make new people tell us their favorite newport set or moment before giving them the unannounced
Good idea. Introduce yourselves here and give us something along those lines; favorite moments, what you're looking forward, who you'd like to se at the Fort next year and beyond, etc.
Also if people could just message me about it, instead of asking here it would be much appreciated
First year last year, same favorite moments were Paul Janeway from St. Paul and The Broken Bones rolling around on stage and Ryan Adams and the Stringdusters stopping mid set to admire a pair of helicopters fly by. Looking forward to finding new artists I haven't really listened to, that was probably the best lasting legacy from last summer.

I'll send a pm as you asked, thanks.
Oh the latter was Priceless!!! Catching St Paul in the fort walls square space was quite epic.
For the Folks that are new - and the usual suspects that Still have not said Hi, a bunch of folks in this thread stay at our house for NFF - we call it quack club, and sport laminates with a pirate duck on them. We used to roll in as a group of 30 .. with the ticket sales so fast now, smaller and smaller (17 this year..). We are going to try to set up a little low shade at the back in each shade area. If time allows the QC rubber duck image will be visible. Please say hi if you spot a quacker. I've a mission this year to spot a fellow ginger. First flights land tomorrow night. Let the games begin!

I'm a fellow ginger. I'll be on the lookout this year. It's about time I met some of y'all
Don't sweat the rain; sweaty the heat. Get a cheap tarp or one of those plastic bags from a hotel for during the rain (actually tarps gather too much water); then a dry tarp or second plastic -- or a good friend -- to sit on after the rain. Poonchos sell out so get one for 2 bucks somewhere. Don't carry much because then you have to protect that stuff. Also recommend light shoes, flip flops. sandals. Wet socks = oy.
Think my generation -- Woodstock, and it will be fine. Enjoy everyone!

It's more about the worry that some of my most anticipated sets get cancelled
A big shout out to whoever posted happy thoughts about the weather some posts back. The lastest detailed hourly forecast shows no rain during the Friday Festival hours and just some much lighter scattered showers on Saturday morning between 10 and 1. Thats a much better looking forecast than yesterday's. Nice. I'm looking forward to seeing all you beautiful happy people this weekend. It's going to be an awesome weekend folks!

Too many favorite moments to list them all.
Pete Seeger leading the crowd to sing Happy birthday to Ramblin' Jack at a backstage bbq. Middle Brother at the quad. Britney Howard with MMJ. Punch Brothers playing unamplified for 20+ minutes after their set was supposed to end. Everything TuneYards. Jackson Browne and deer tick and Dawes etc playing Paul Simon songs at the NBC.
On the road now. Maybe we'll see some of you there
I don't know if I would be considered a newbie because I have posted in the past. However I don't post very often, but enjoy the information and the community everyone has created on this board.
One of my favorite moments happened last year at the hotel after one of the JPT shows. A friend of mine came into the hotel room and stated on his way back to the room the elevator door opened and in walked Glen Hansard. He said that he gave him a hug and talked to him for the entire elevator ride until they said their goodbyes. My girlfriend and I went into the lobby where he was standing so she could confess her love for him haha. The next day we showed up early to the fort show to catch his set and between his songs he said "there's the guy I hugged in the elevator". It was pretty great.
With that said I love the idea of not knowing the announced artist/artists but afraid of missing out on Michael Kiwanukas set. Can someone please let me know who this is please?

That Glen Hansard set last year was one of the best, for me. I absolutely thought he killed it. It was definitely the moment where I looked at my wife and thought, we are never missing this festival again.

Completely agree. I was hopeful NPR was going to release the audio for that set.
This is our 8th year in a row top 10 Newport moments in no order 1. The first Backstage benefit BBQ (2011 I think) in the quad. Watching John McCauley sing happy birthday to Rambling Jack Elliott in a bear suit from 5 feet away was beyond special. It was the moment I knew I was coming back every year. Later Pete Seeger joined RJE for a duet and Captain McCauley led 25 or so in my first of many sing a longs with Goodnight Irene. Magic 2. The Strand of Oaks set in the harbor. Getting chills just typing about it. Raw emotion. He hugged about 30 of us in the crowd after his set. Including me. Almost don't want to see him again because it just can't be that good..... 3. The night JJ Cale died at the Jane Pickens theatre. Absolute magic. Blake Mills and Dawes ripped through impromptu covers of 'Call me the breeze' and 'After Midnight' that not only rocked the place but we got to see Blake Mills improvise. Blake f'ing Mills. That same night I finally got Father John Misty. He made me laugh and rocked me with "laid back country picker'. Isbell was at the top of game and Jim James played Hungry Heart. I mean.... 4. The Reignwolf set. Kudos to Jay Sweet for booking him. It made some folk nazis uncomfortable, but that's part of the festivals lore. He was so sweet and friendly afterword when we met him. Go see him live.. 5. I love the first set of the day on the main stage. Rayland Baxter last year. The Barr Brothers 2 years ago. John Batiste. Berkeley gospel.... Something about music at noon at the fort. 6. Sturgill Simpson's set in the quad. Maybe the best set I've seen. And I didn't really like his album that much coming in....candidate to close the main stage in a year or 2 7. Jack White crying during his rendition of Goodnight Irene and him completely "getting" Newport. Him watching Benjamin Booker from the front row, walking freely throughout the fort. And his set destroyed.... 8. The first Middle brother set (2011) . If you were there, I don't need to explain how good. 9. Hanging out with the same 15 friends every year from Charleston. It's truly like a family reunion for us. I probably don't laugh as much as I do these 4 days... 10 thru 100 THE DEER TICK and friends AFTERPARTIES. I've been to 17 of the 19 shows. So many amazing memories No offense to anyone has there own Newport memories. But you really haven't experienced the entire weekend until you have been to the blues cafe. My favorite 3 nights of the year. The year Tick played 4 nights without repeating a song. The surprise Phosphescent set J Mascis sound manager doing a Stooges set Robert Ellis doing Hollywood Nights Jackson Browne surprise set taylor goldsmiths dad doing James Brown with Dawes Ron Gallo and Tick closing out 2014 with Harry Nielson's Jump into the Fire Tick, Lucius and some tiny Latin guy paying homage to Prince last year with 1999 Meeting Spirit Family reunion outside and sneaking them in. Friends for life vazquez doing Deervana shirtless langhorne serenading the entire bar.....from the bar Leon Bridges, Ruby Amanfu, Dawes, Sharon von Etten, the Suffers, Isbell playing Skynyrd. Middle brother, rayland Baxter, countless others
Deertick gets other artists to do shit they never do anywhere but that tiny bar in Newport They are the best bar band in the world. Do what you have to do to get in..... enjoy everyone
Hey guys, I've been following this board for the past year, but haven't posted much. An introduction is a fair price to find out who the unannounced is. My wife and I have been travelling down from Newfoundland the past four years for the festival, adding more people to our group each year. My favorite festival moment would be Kris Kristofferson and Margo Price singing Bobby McGee with the Texas Gentleman last year. The tears were flowing for that one. Other then that, my favorite moments each year come from the Pickens shows. Everyone is a truly magical, one of a kind music experience. I still have a ticket available for both shows this year if anyone is interested. You won't be disappointed.
If someone could message me the Unannounced that would be greatly appreciated.

There are very very few times I've ever been as giddy/elated as she appeared to be during that song; was absolutely wonderful to see!

This was a fun read. I've only been to one Deer Tick after show (Another one on Saturday this year). My favorite (non-Deer Tick) moment from that show was that amazing sax-solo during the Hiss Golden Messenger set... I can still hear it. That whole night was amazing though. We didn't go to the festival that day so we were the first people they let in Newport Blues while Leon Bridges was finishing up sound check so we got to meet him. Later on while Deer Tick was playing I felt somebody pushing me from behind so a blindly pushed back thinking it just some drunk guy and it end up being Jess and Holly from Lucius trying to get on stage. I apologized and helped them up.

Somebody commented on Deer Tick's Facebook with late night artists:
Assuming Friday: Big Thief Robert Ellis Ruby Amanfu
Assuming Saturday: Hiss Golden Messenger (Justin Vernon appearance?) Nicole Atkins The Seratones (Confirmed Saturday)
Assuming Sunday: Billy Bragg Jim James The Wild Reeds
Edit: Not sure the order meant anything. I pulled up the playlist and the artists weren't really in that order for me and it wasn't as clear as that person made it out to be.
