Fun fact: Big Boi has now played more Founders festivals than any other artist. He played the first Gov Ball, with Outkast in 14, played with Big Grams last year, and now Meadows this year.
-Jay Z -Gorillaz -Future (although apparently he's crappy live?) -Nas if we was doing illmatic, if not then meh -Erykah Badu -Migos -BSS -De La Soul -Joey Bada$$ -Tegan and Sara -BBNG -Swet Shop Boys
how are these hip hop acts live? i think my main issue isn't that its so hip hop heavy, but most hip hop i've heard live is terrible to me. i liked RTJ live and Kendrick, but just about everything else i've seen has been awful to ok (Wu was awful) does anyone here play with a live band? i'm hoping De La will be good but they're up there in age
and wasn't Actin Bronson the guy who just asked for weed his whole set?
Man you are really mad that they went light on the alternative acts lol... Meadows will always be dominated by hip hop.
can bassnectar be dropped so the awful bassheads can go elsewhere?
Just a prediction, but I dont think many of them will show up. Last year not many Pretty Lights fanboys came. Theres not much else on the lineup for them. Chances are theyll catch him at Bisco and save some coin.
"Awful basshead" checking in - I can confirm many will not be making it. Labor Day Weekend is a 3 day Bassnectar event in Hampton, VA so most Bassnectar fans will probably just do that instead.

last year saturday was so perfect... it was still hip hop heavy but i was able to see 2 solid days of music.. i reaaaaalllly hoped they had the formula down. i'm also annoyed because they've turned gov ball into the same thing.
Too hip-hop/rap heavy for me. I've seen RHCP before, and I'll be seeing Gorillaz in Philly. And there are only a handful of undercards that I wanna see here (Badu, TV on the Radio, Blood Orange, Broken Social Scene). So I'll possibly pass.
I still believe three festivals are too much for New York. I know it doesn't work that way, but If Founders is gonna have two festivals, maybe one of them should focus on hip-hop/rap/shizty EDM, and the other one should focus on having acts like Beach House, Badu, Blood Orange, Air etc. But I know it's never gonna happen.
I actually think the way they're doing it is smart, they just could've booked some better acts for the indie/alt side of this.
It's of course smart in terms of the economics and selling-as-many-tickets-as-possible point of view. However, I think a better balance between genres is still possible (i.e. FYF this year, Gov Ball 2013 & 2014) without being heavy on hip-hop/rap. I'm not a huge fan of rap, and when I see a lineup like this, I cannot justify myself to pay $300+ for it, even though there are really good gets like Badu/BSS/Blood Orange.

Maybe they should do what Made In America did this year, and should not book any of those alternative acts.

You really think this years Gov Ball is that Rap heavy? They have a really deep and solid Alt rock and alt-Pop roster in my opinion.

I'd argue that the section of Badu/Blood Orange fans that aren't also hip-hop fans is a significant minority. Meadows is meant to be a hip-hop festival with some other stuff thrown in. At least that's how I viewed it last year. Panorama seems to be what you're looking for in terms of taste. They would definitely book all three of those artists (Blood Orange played last year).

it is compared to past years... hell they even have what, 2 british hip hop acts in there?

Pandora is actually what i'm looking for now.. unfortunatly booking it in the middle of July isnt' the best time to book a NYC festival. I thought i'd to this year since wayhome shit the bed, but that's still my vacation month

De La were awesome at Gov Ball 2016.
Action Bronson is pretty decent live too. Honestly don't get the complaint, most of the hip-hop acts they booked are good live.
They really need to drop that new album and give us a real tour. The show I saw them do for their Forgiveness Rock Record Tour, somehow that was almost seven years ago, was a real treat.

When you look at the breakdown of the day-by-day I dont see you being left with a rapper vs a rapper as a conflict. Friday you should be able to see Lorde, Flume, Beach House, and Bleachers w/o conflict. Saturday: Phoenix, Ronson & Parker, Head and The heart, Car Seat Headrest, Saint Motel, Banks. Sunday: Tool, Cage, Royal Blood, Avalanches, DeMarco. I mean thats about as deep of a Alt-style lineup as youll see in 2017

I agree with your first argument. And I do think that Meadows seems to me a hip-hop heavy festival too, but Broken Social Scene seems so random to me in this lineup (like Savages last year). I think Panorama had a great lineup last year (for my tastes), and Gov Ball used to book more like Panorama before AEG decided to throw a festival in NYC and ruined it for everyone (including themselves).
Must See 2018 List: 1. Drake 2. The Cure 3. David Byrne 4. King Krule 5. Moses Sumney 6. Dua Lipa 7. Mount Kimbie 8. Perfume Genius 9. Yaeji 10. Big Thief
i think i might just hope for a good single ticket for Gorillaz and call it a day
for the record, i think this is a good (if dated) lineup, just not a good lineup for me. its fucking stacked for hip hop
seriously though, RHCP, Weezer, Foster, TV on the radio, Two door ... Tegan and sara, none of these bands have done anything interesting in YEARS... wtf is goign on?
All but TV on the Radio have new albums I believe.

i already have my gov ball tickets, so i'm going. its a good lineup, i'm going to have a good time. its just trending away from what i'm into. just because there's an alt act playing against a hip hop act, doesn't mean i'm going to like the alt act. there aren't as many options as there used to be if you don't like hip hop, that's all

I really dont think Gov Ball has changed at all in terms of lineup genre diversity.

Was this just announced/leaked? This is awesome news!
that's what i'm asking. who here do you consider good live?
Have seen Big Boi 3 times and am always impressed with how crisp his voice sounds live. Obviously RTJ is a great show. I've heard consistently good reviews about De La and Jay, but have not seen myself.
I'm actually really digging this. With Landmark out this year, I might be able to make it happen. Booked a refundable hotel room--that's always step 1!

I concur; De La Soul was one of my favorite sets of Gov Ball. They didn't even play much from 3 Feet High and Rising but it was still superb.
